    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly cloudy, warm and continued humid in south but somewhat lower humidity levels developing for the north, highs 18-23 C except 15-17 C near the east coast. This morning, some rather light and brief showers will move west through Leinster and Ulster, these may almost fade out then later on, a few thundery showers could develop in Mayo and west Galway, as well as Kerry, Cork, Limerick and south Clare. Winds E-NE 30-50 km/hr.

TONIGHT ... Showers fading by midnight, clear intervals, quite mild in south with lows 9-12 C, somewhat cooler than recent nights in north, lows 5-8 C.

FRIDAY ... Partly cloudy with long spells of sunshine inland north, west, risk of heavy showers or thunderstorms in west Munster. Winds northeast to north 30-50 km/hr. Highs 17-20 C south, 14-17 C north.

SATURDAY ... Winds will continue to back around through north to northwest, although the flow will slacken in the west with the approach of a high pressure ridge. It will be generally cooler but quite bright with only a slight risk of isolated showers in east Ulster mainly. Lows 3-7 C and highs 13-16 C.

SUNDAY ... Sunny intervals, risk of isolated frost in the early morning, but pleasant in the daytime, with a mixture of cloudy and sunny intervals, early morning lows 1-4 C and highs 13-16 C. Sunrise is so early now that a touch of ground frost will be long gone before almost everyone starts their day, but very early risers may find it frosty in a few spots.

MONDAY ... Increasing cloud, a bit warmer again, lows 4-7 C and highs 15-19.

TUESDAY ... Showers or periods of rain, moderate south to southwest winds, lows 8-12 C and highs 17-19 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... It will probably start to warm up again, some guidance suggests rather rapidly once the Tuesday system pushes away to the northeast. The month will probably continue to be quite warm but the next warm spell will not be as prone to sea breezes in Leinster, while somewhat more prone to them on the west coast instead; the south coast will be relatively coolest of all. Inland though it looks like a warm spell redeveloping, and heat wave claims are bound to hit the press. If this keeps up, the summer may turn out quite warm, I am working on an outlook that I hope to publish early next week.

My local weather on Tuesday was sunny with intervals of high cloud and rather warm, 20 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny with cloudy intervals developing from north to central counties as a slow-moving and weak front drops south. It will probably stay dry almost everywhere but there is a slight risk of showers or thunderstorms in west Munster. Winds northeast to north occasionally 30-50 km/hr.
    Highs 18-22 C south, 14-17 C north.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with a few clear intervals, isolated showers in west Munster. Lows 3-7 C.

SUNDAY ... Sunny intervals, risk of isolated frost in the early morning, but pleasant in the daytime, with a mixture of cloudy and sunny intervals, early morning lows 1-4 C, probably around 8-10 C by 0800h then highs 13-16 C.

MONDAY ... Increasing cloud, a bit warmer again, lows 4-7 C and highs 15-19.

TUESDAY ... Showers or periods of rain, moderate south to southwest winds, lows 8-12 C and highs 15-18 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Heavy showers then clearing, gusty west to northwest winds and rather cool, lows 5-8 C and highs 13-16 C. About 10-20 mm rainfall is likely in many parts of the country, heavier south, from Tuesday into early Wednesday.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... A few more showers appear likely late in the week as a weaker system tracks east from the Atlantic, then the models are showing a warm and dry week to follow, while this is low-confidence at present, it would bring temperatures back up towards 20 C or a little above.

My local weather on Thursday was sunny and warm with a high of 22 C as our year of California-style weather continues almost uninterrupted. Normal May weather here is about the same as in northern France or southern England, fairly frequent showers and highs 16-18 C. This good weather extends east through most of the northern U.S. but colder air is pushing south in other parts of western Canada and while the fires in Alberta are not entirely under control, they are being slowly suppressed more by this chilly trend than any measurable rainfall.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... In light northerly breezes, some areas will have long sunny intervals, exceptions being parts of south Leinster and east to south coastal Munster where cloudy intervals will be frequent (although with some sun at times too). One or two showers could develop over a few higher parts of west Munster and could produce thunder, but this would be isolated and brief in duration. Highs 17-19 C for most but 13-16 C near east and north coasts.

TONIGHT ... Clear skies in most parts, you'll be able to see the half-moon approaching the planet Jupiter, look to the south around midnight (you'll need to be near the Pacific to see their closest conjunction at around midnight to 0200h there). Cool with isolated ground frost inland, lows 1 to 4 C.

SUNDAY ... Sunny intervals, after a risk of isolated frost in the early morning, but pleasant in the daytime, early morning lows 1-4 C, probably around 8-10 C by 0800h then highs 13-17 C. Light winds.

OUTLOOK ... Windy and rather cool on Thursday, then another interval of rain with 15-30 mm potential on Friday, followed by a slow clearing trend over the weekend of 21st-22nd. The week after that should see a gradual return to warm weather.

My local conditions (as with yours) tended to prove that if Friday the 13th is unlucky, it's not with the weather, which turned out sunny with high cloud at times and very warm at 27 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny with a few cloudy intervals mainly near north coast and warming up gradually to reach 14-17 C this afternoon in light and variable winds. Sea breezes may set in but will also be weak.

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals, chilly, mist or fog patches, lows 2-7 C.

MONDAY ... Increasing cloud, a little warmer, highs 17-20 C.

TUESDAY ... Showers developing mainly in western half of the country, lows about 5-8 C and highs 14-17 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Breezy with showers, some of them rather heavy, and highs near 15 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Unsettled with some rather heavy falls of rain from Thursday to Sunday (on average, 20-35 mm will fall during the period) and staying cooler with highs 13-16 C. A slow warming trend should follow in the week of 23-27 May.

My local weather started out sunny and ended up overcast with rain just off to the south, variable breezes have turned easterly and increased to 30-50 km/hr but it's still clear enough to get a view of the moon near Jupiter. It felt warm this morning (23 C) and chilly since late afternoon as temperatures have fallen to about 14 C.

    Monday, 16 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny with some cloudy intervals more frequent near south and also northwest coasts, highs 15-19 C.

TONIGHT ... Increasing cloud, some rain before morning in west, 3-7 mm with lows 6-9 C.

TUESDAY ... Passing showers with 5-10 mm for most locations, a few brighter intervals also, highs 16-19 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Partly cloudy, showers, moderate southwest winds, lows about 8 C and highs about 17 C.

THURSDAY ... Heavy showers likely (10-20 mm rain potential), lows near 7 C and highs near 15 C.

FRIDAY ... Variable cloud, and it may become quite windy in Connacht and west Ulster, breezy elsewhere, passing showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 16 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Not much change in the variable and showery pattern through the weekend and part of the following week but a gradual trend to more settled conditions and a return to southeasterly breezes with the same temperature pattern as last week (warmer west/north, sea breeze cooling near south and east coasts). This spell could be a little less conducive for rain in the south although there is bound to be some. Temperatures would probably get back into the 20s for some places in that regime; at the moment the charts do not indicate record warmth but sometimes they don't pick up on the full extent of warming from that direction until we get within a week (as noticed in reviewing forecasts for this past warm spell).

Meanwhile, the weather at my location was overcast and not overly warm at about 16 C. It has been very cold for mid-May in eastern North America. Marquette on the south shore of Lake Superior had an inch of snow on Saturday and temperatures barely above freezing. This cool spell will gradually give way to near normal conditions later this week.

    Forecasts for Ireland

Summer 2016 Outlook -- A rather warm summer is predicted, with rainfall likely to be above normal values in the south, trending to below normal in Ulster. There will be occasional spells of very warm or hot weather when southeast winds develop around high pressure to the northeast. There will also be spells of near normal temperatures and frequent showers in southwest to west winds when lower pressure develops to northwest. These spells are expected to be roughly equal in frequency so that the summer will have alternating spells of warm/dry and cooler (although not very cool)/moist conditions. The heavier rain may develop when warm, dry spells break down to be replaced by cooler Atlantic intervals. Some severe thunderstorms are to be expected in that scenario and the inland south to southwest may be the most likely location. Overall, temperatures are expected to run about 0.5 to 1.0 degrees above normal from June to August with no large variation from that expected month to month. Rainfall may vary from 30% above normal in parts of the south to 10% below normal in the north. This reflects a trend expected in Britain where Scotland may have a very dry summer with 30 to 50 per cent below average rainfalls; the south of England will also be wet and northern France very wet (locally up to twice normal rainfalls). The same general temperature forecast applies in Britain, generally warm but more so relative to normal in Scotland. Final note, while the temperature forecast for Ireland (and Britain) is conservative, there is some chance of a warmer outcome still, taking the summer into the warmest 10% (at the more conservative levels I have mentioned, it would be warmer than 75% of recent summers). Expect the warmest weather in July and the first week of August.

    SHORT TERM FORECASTS

TODAY ...Passing showers with 5-10 mm for most locations, a few brighter intervals also, highs 16-19 C.

TONIGHT ... Another round of showers, moderate southwest winds and lows of 7-11 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Partly cloudy, a few showers, moderate southwest winds veering to northwest 40-60 km/hr, and highs about 15 C northwest, 17 C elsewhere.

THURSDAY ... Heavy showers likely (10-20 mm rain potential), lows near 7 C and highs near 15 C.

FRIDAY ... Variable cloud, breezy at times with passing showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 16 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Intervals of rain, windy at times, highs near 16 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Becoming very warm again during the course of the last week of May, with strong southerly winds for the early part of the week, backing to moderate southeast as warmer air pushes in, highs may reach the low 20s although 17-19 C near exposed coasts. There may be a brief interval of heavier rain and further scattered showers but a drying trend as the warmth develops.

For BRITAIN, during this forecast period the only significant difference will be very strong winds developing over the weekend as the track of low pressure will bring a stronger southwesterly gradient to England around late Saturday (in comparison to Ireland).

My local weather on Monday was overcast and cool with a high of 15 C.

    Wednesday, 18 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly cloudy, a few passing showers but some places will remain dry, as amounts only 2-5 mm ... moderate west to northwest winds 40-60 km/hr developing by mid-day, highs near 17 C east and south, 15 C west and north.

TONIGHT ... Overcast, a few showers, then periods of rain, lows 8-10 C.

THURSDAY ... Showers may be heavy at times, 10-20 mm potential, highs about 16 C.

FRIDAY ... Some morning sunshine then increasing cloud, rain developing by evening. Lows near 5 C and highs near 17 C. Windy in Connacht and west Munster (S to SW 50-80 km/hr by late in the day).

SATURDAY ... Windy at times, showers or periods of rain, cool. Lows near 6 C and highs near 14 C.

SUNDAY ... Showers, some improvement by afternoon, lows near 6 C and highs near 17 C.

OUTLOOK ... Breezy, turning warmer again with outbreaks of rain likely in south, highs may reach low 20s before end of the month.

My local weather on Tuesday was overcast but some sun managed to break through at times and it was rather cool at 15 C, with a southeast wind.

(note -- if you missed it, I posted a summer outlook in yesterday's forecast)

    Thursday, 19 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Some heavy rain will move across Leinster and inland Connacht, most of Ulster while partial clearing begins in parts of Munster and west Connacht. About 10-15 mm of rain is likely, with the risk of a few thundery showers. Clearing should reach the east coast by about mid-day and in the westerly flow that follows, some sunny breaks with isolated showers (more numerous in the northwest) by afternoon, with highs 15-17 C and some westerly gusts to about 60 km/hr.

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals, fog patches, lows 5-8 C.

FRIDAY ... Increasing cloud during the morning hours, some outbreaks of rain in the west by mid-day or early afternoon, these spreading to the east by late afternoon or evening. About 5-10 mm on average, highs 16-18 C.

SATURDAY ... Patchy light rain or drizzle, somewhat cooler although quite humid, lows near 9 C and highs near 15 C.

SUNDAY ... Variable cloud, a few more showers, lows near 7 C and highs near 15 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Next week is looking warmer in stages with some rain accompanying the warm fronts moving west in a rather similar pattern to the recent warm week, so we should see broadly similar results, higher temperatures in north and west than seabreeze-exposed south and east coasts, but generally warm with highs 18-22 C. This warm pattern looks like it wants to become entrenched as we approach June.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with a bit of light rain just starting this evening, highs were around 17 C.

    Friday, 20 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy but a few brighter intervals this morning as rain gradually pushes inland from the Atlantic, generally rather light and patchy but becoming heavier in Connacht towards afternoon. Humid, with highs about 16 C in most places. Rainfalls only 1-3 mm for many areas but 5-15 mm in Connacht, parts of west Munster and Ulster.

TONIGHT ... Rain becoming heavier, slowly extending further east towards morning, 5-15 mm likely, with lows 10-12 C.

SATURDAY ... Some heavy rain at first, then partial clearing, warm and humid, possible showers or thunderstorms developing, with a few heavier ones likely in central counties, spreading to Leinster during the late afternoon. Highs about 17 C.

SUNDAY ... Early morning showers clearing, some sunny intervals and a bit cooler, less humid, scattered showers then redeveloping in light to moderate northwest winds. Lows 7-9 C and highs 14-16 C.

MONDAY ... Sunny intervals, lows 4-7 C and highs 14-17 C. Light winds.

OUTLOOK ... The flow will become east to southeast during most of the week, with outbreaks of rain possible but also some dry intervals, temperatures gradually rising to the 18-21 C range except 14-17 C near east and south coasts.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast with a few sunny breaks, and highs near 17 C.

    Saturday, 21 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny breaks, showers and a few thunderstorms will develop, midlands and central Leinster most at risk. Highs near 17 C.

TONIGHT ... Clearing except for some mist or fog patches, isolated showers may continue in parts of northwest, lows 5-8 C. Full moon tonight (10:14 p.m. as it rises low in southeast).

SUNDAY ... Sunny intervals, just a few isolated showers as northwest breezes pick up, becoming quite windy by afternoon especially near Atlantic coasts, with gusts to 70 km/hr. Highs near 15 C.

MONDAY ... Sunny with a few cloudy intervals, light winds, sea breezes will set in on most coasts but nearly calm inland. Lows 3-7 C and highs 15-18 C.

TUESDAY to FRIDAY will bring another spell of east to southeast winds, some rain may move across central regions on Tuesday and northern Ulster on Wednesday, but many places will enjoy quite a stretch of dry weather, warmer for western and central (inland) counties with highs 18-22 C but remaining a bit cool near south and east coasts as sea breezes keep temperatures closer to 14-17 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for some heavier showers or thunderstorms towards the end of the month, continued quite warm.

My local weather on Friday was pleasant with sunny intervals and isolated showers moving east to west, highs near 19 C.

    Sunday, 22 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny intervals this morning in Leinster and east Ulster, nearby parts of Munster and Connacht, as scattered showers slowly push further inland from Atlantic coasts. There will probably be some heavier showers and even a few thunderstorms developing out of this currently rather weak complex and these may be a bit further west than Saturday's outbreak, although eventually reaching the Dublin area but possibly in their last stages. Expect the most vigorous development around Offaly, Westmeath and Laois, local downpours and 10-20 mm rain is possible with brief flooding. Some south coast locations may be much drier with more sunshine. Highs 14-16 C. Temperatures may drop to about 10-12 C in higher parts of Connacht after any strong showers (especially if hail coats the ground for a while).

TONIGHT ... Showers dying out, fog and mist patches but clear intervals near coasts, quite cool with lows 2-6 C.

MONDAY ... Some cloudy intervals near north and west coast and longer sunny intervals further inland, light north winds becoming more variable as sea breezes develop, can't rule out an isolated shower but probably almost everywhere will remain dry, highs 15-18 C.

TUESDAY ... Another rather cold overnight with lows 3-7 C, then as east-southeast breezes develop, one or two showers could develop in central counties moving west towards Galway, but once again the majority of places will remain dry. Somewhat warmer for the west with highs about 19 C, sea breezes will hold down temperatures near east and south coasts to 14-17 C.

WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY will remain in a similar pattern with some outbreaks of light rain moving across Ulster but generally dry in many parts, lows about 5 to 8 C and highs 17 to 21 C west, 14 to 17 C east.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for a greater chance of rain by the weekend and into the first part of the next week, then a warm, dry spell possible in early June.

My local weather on Saturday was overcast with traces of rain and light east winds, highs near 18 C.

    Monday, 23 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly to mostly sunny, light winds and highs 14-16 C.

TONIGHT ... Clear with fog and mist developing, some low cloud drifting west across parts of Ulster, north Leinster. Lows 3-7 C.

TUESDAY ... Sunny intervals although more cloud likely in north, isolated afternoon and evening showers mostly in Connacht, warmer for west with highs 17-19 C, staying closer to 15 C for east and south coast. Moderate east to southeast breezes 30-50 km/hr at times.

WEDNESDAY ... Morning lows about 5-8 C then partly cloudy, warm in western counties, highs 17-20 C, slight risk of a shower or isolated thunderstorm. Sunny with cloudy intervals for east and south, cool near Irish Sea and south coast, highs 14-17 C. Moderate east to southeast breezes 30-50 km/hr.

THURSDAY ... Warm and humid with showers and thunderstorms developing, some may become heavy inland west, southeast breezes 30-50 km/hr. Lows about 8-10 C and highs 18-21 C west, 15-18 C east and south.

FRIDAY to SUNDAY now expected to remain rather warm, partly cloudy, not as many showers and longer dry intervals. Lows near 8 C and highs 17-20 C.

The same general pattern will be found across Britain but rain could be heavy at times mid-week.

My local weather on Sunday was overcast with a few brief showers and rather cool, highs near 16 C.

    Tuesday, 24 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with sunny breaks developing by afternoon, moderate east to northeast breezes will keep it rather cool (13 to 16 C) near east and outer south coasts, and parts of north, but somewhat warmer in the central and western counties, highs reaching 17 or 18 C. Isolated showers may break out in Connacht, south Ulster and parts of northwest Leinster.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with some clear intervals, fog and mist patches, lows between 5 and 8 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny intervals, similar temperature pattern to today, highs 13 C east coast to 17 C west, possibly a bit warmer if any sunshine persists. Moderate northeast winds 30-50 km/hr.

THURSDAY ... Overcast with outbreaks of showery rain in parts of west-central and northern regions, lows near 7 C and highs near 15 C east to 19 C west. Winds easterly 40-60 km/hr at times.

FRIDAY to SUNDAY are looking more settled and reasonably warm except near east coast as a northeast wind resumes. While parts of southern England and northern France will be overcast with rain or drizzle at times, most if not all of Ireland should be far enough away from a slow-moving low to have more of the influence of a strong but distant high pressure ridge across the far northern Atlantic. Temperatures should continue much the same although a degree or two warmer thanks to a little more sunshine in the mix, but it will remain warmer in the west than near the east coast.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for this same pattern to persist, which usually means that relatively warm weather will dominate in the west, rather cool for the east, but that there can be occasional westward moving frontal troughs that bring more widespread cloud and a few showers that result in a temporary cooling of this pattern. Overall temperatures will probably average near normal but could be 1-2 degrees above normal in parts of Connacht and west Munster, while 1-2 degrees below normal in Leinster and east Ulster. This type of pattern can slowly evolve into a very warm and dry outcome if the ridge settles a bit closer to Ireland by drifting south.

My local weather on a holiday Monday here was overcast but not too dismal with some brighter intervals although no actual sunshine, and highs near 17 C.

    Wednesday, 25 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny intervals then increasing cloud by afternoon, spreading from east to west. East to northeast breezes will keep temperatures in the 13-15 C range in most of Leinster and east Ulster, while further west highs should reach 18 to 20 C.

TONIGHT ... Overcast, outbreaks of light rain or drizzle across parts of north and east, lows 7-9 C.

THURSDAY ... Widespread light rain or drizzle during the morning then partial clearing, highs 13-16 C east, 16-18 C west.

FRIDAY to SUNDAY will then bring slightly unsettled and warm conditions with the chance of heavy showers or local thunderstorms mainly in the western counties and inland from the south coast. Highs will range from 17-19 C east to about 20-23 C west. There will be at least some sunshine in most places each day with a greater risk of low cloud in Ulster and parts of north Leinster.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for this pattern to continue with perhaps a drying trend leading to longer sunny intervals and fewer isolated showers or thunderstorms. Temperatures will continue a little warmer than average in most places except near the east coast due to onshore east to northeast winds

Over in BRITAIN it will be a similar story with the western counties of England and most of Wales warmer, and some rain later today moving west across central regions.

My local weather on Tuesday continued cloudy but with a few brighter intervals in the afternoon. Highs reached 18 C. Eastern regions are warming up towards a week-long warm spell that will see the first sustained above normal temperatures in about a month in places like Washington, New York and Boston. Highs will be around 27 C.

    Thursday, 26 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Overcast with occasional light rain, some brighter intervals may develop by afternoon in parts of the southeast, but also some heavier showers could build up over parts of the inland southwest and west. Rainfalls in most places about 3-7 mm. Highs 13-16 C except near 18 C where cloud breaks during the afternoon. Light easterly winds near southeast coasts, otherwise rather light and variable winds.

TONIGHT ... Light rain or drizzle ending, fog or mist patches, lows 5-8 C.

FRIDAY to SUNDAY ... Each day will be partly cloudy with sunny intervals, risk of a few showers or thunderstorms by afternoon in parts of the inland west, and slowly warming, highs 16-19 C Friday to 18-22 C Sunday although slightly cooler near east coast. Light to moderate east to northeast breezes 30-50 km/hr at times.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Hazy sunshine, isolated showers or thunderstorms and warm as we enter June, highs could reach 21-24 C in parts of inland west while staying in the 17-19 C range further east and near the south coast.

My local weather on Wednesday was sunny and a little warmer than recently with highs near 20 C.

    Friday, 27 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with some afternoon sunny breaks, but these may not last too long before showers and isolated thunderstorms develop. These are more likely to be persistent or heavy in the inland south and west although they could happen in other places too. Coverage is expected to be about 30% of the country at some point and amounts 5-10 mm. It will be a bit warmer than yesterday (not a high bar) and highs of 13-17 C will be widespread, 17-20 C possible in parts of the inland west.

TONIGHT ... Foggy with a few clear breaks, lows 7-10 C.

OUTLOOK for WEEKEND and MONDAY somewhat uncertain due to masses of low cloud circulating around a distant low that is edging west from Europe towards the east coast of Britain. However, the most likely outcome is partly cloudy skies, cooling sea breezes near east coast, warm for parts of the inland south and most of the west, highs generally in the 17-21 C range.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for somewhat warmer still (19-23 C) but with the persistent east to northeast breezes it may remain 13-17 C in parts of Leinster and east Ulster.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast and cool with outbreaks of rain, something we really need so the timing is good for that; highs only reached the mid teens.

    Saturday, 28 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with some sunny intervals, these more frequent in Leinster. Showers and a few isolated thunderstorms will develop in west-central counties by afternoon. Highs 17-20 C west and central, 13-17 C Leinster and east Ulster. Light east to northeast winds.

TONIGHT ... Showers ending, cloudy, foggy by morning in some parts, lows about 10-13 C.

SATURDAY to MONDAY will continue very similar to today with warmer temperatures in parts of the west (highs 18-22 C) and scattered afternoon showers or thunderstorms. Leinster and east Ulster will continue a bit cooler as winds slowly back more northeast then northerly. Highs there will be around 14 to 18 C. Nights will be mild, cloudy and lows will be 8-11 C.

TUESDAY will see stronger northerly breezes and fragmenting showers moving west from Britain in the dying stages of a low that will be more active in Britain on Monday night. Still, some rain is likely in parts of the north and central counties. Highs 18-21 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK for the first week to ten days of June ... this interval looks even warmer and may become more settled for a few days before slowly getting back into scattered showers, but winds will slowly turn more southerly as the easterly flow is replaced by a ridge of high pressure and then by very weak Atlantic lows but with the warm influence remaining. Highs may be around 22-24 C at times, away from cooler coastal sea breezes.

My local weather on Friday was partly cloudy and cool with a few showers by evening, highs near 15 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly cloudy after fog or mist dissipates, then a gradual buildup of showers and thunderstorms mainly in the western half of the country, rainfall amounts of 5-10 mm in some places, warm in most areas with highs 18-22 C but somewhat cooler near the east coast with highs 15-19 C.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with a few clear intervals, fog and mist patches developing, lows 6-10 C.

MONDAY ... Although rather similar to today's forecast, the showers and thunderstorms appear more likely to be largely confined to west Munster. Highs will reach 18-21 C in the west and some central counties too, and about 15-18 C in most of Leinster.

TUESDAY ... Sunny intervals, warm. There is still a chance of rain late in the day moving west from Britain but some guidance now slows this down for an arrival on Wednesday instead. Lows 7-11 C and highs 18-23 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Partly cloudy to overcast, showers or outbreaks of light rain, highs near 19 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... The pattern will continue rather similar but most of the rainfall seems likely to stay in south Leinster and Munster from mid-week to the weekend of 4th-5th June. At some point there may be a dry interval as higher pressure breaks down the easterly flow, and then eventually the circulation will become more south to southwest. Guidance at present does not bring much warmer air into Ireland or southern Britain but keeps it rather close over parts of France, so that given the usual uncertainty with forecasts at the ten to fifteen day time frame, it would not be surprising if warmer weather developed in the second week of June; at the least, it appears likely to run close to or slightly above normal values or around 20 C for daytime highs.

My local weather (this will please anyone who remembers all the warm, dry conditions that I have reported here almost all of the spring) was frankly dismal with heavy rain and very cool temperatures that struggled to exceed 10 degrees (C). We had a normal month's rainfall of almost 50 mm but that was badly needed, just not on a Saturday necessarily. It remains very warm in most of the eastern half of North America and a tropical storm (Bonnie) has formed off the southeast coast. You may recall that 2016 already had a named storm (Alex) back in January.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny intervals, hazy and warm, highs 18-22 C with outbreaks of heavy showers confined to Cork and Kerry (10-15 mm possible), just a slight chance of an isolated shower elsewhere. Somewhat cooler in parts of Leinster still, highs 15-18 C due to the persistent east-northeast breezes.

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals, although fairly cloudy in Munster, quite mild, lows about 10-13 C.

TUESDAY ... Sunny intervals, warm and hazy, just a slight risk of an isolated shower in south, highs 19-23 C. Somewhat cooler near east coast.

WEDNESDAY ... Increasing cloud, a few showers possible, warm. Lows about 10 to 13 C and highs 20 to 23 C (somewhat cooler east).

THURSDAY ... Scattered showers, highs near 19 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Cloudy with sunny intervals and rather warm for several days Friday into weekend, but an increasing risk of showers developing by end of the weekend and into the following week, highs are expected to remain in the warmer 19-23 C range.

The main difference from the above forecast for southern BRITAIN would be earlier onset of the mid-week rain during Tuesday afternoon.

My local weather improved to mostly sunny, rather cool and breezy with highs near 16 C. There were a few showers over north shore mountains during the day.

    Tuesday, 31 May, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny with a few cloudy intervals more frequent near northeast coasts, warm with highs 19-23 C for most, 15-18 C in sea breezes.

TONIGHT ... Clear with a few cloudy intervals, mild. Lows 6-10 C.

WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY appear likely to continue much the same, although with a slight risk of isolated showers in the north on Thursday. Highs will be into the low 20s away from cooler east-facing coasts where 16-19 C will be more probable. Overnight lows will remain near normal at 7-11 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK is fairly good too, while there may be more cloud in the mix, and a slight increase in the risk of isolated showers, it will continue to be mostly warm and dry with highs 18-23 C.

NEXT WEEK looks as though it may slowly turn more unsettled as winds from the south develop and bring moisture in from the Biscay region. It should stay quite warm with highs 18-22 C.

Over in BRITAIN today, a low moving southwest from Belgium into France will spread 10-20 mm rainfalls across parts of southern England with some embedded thunderstorms. In northeast France this same system may bring heavier rainfalls of 20-40 mm locally. In the heavier rain it will be rather cool at 12-14 C but away from that band of rain it should be fairly close to 19 or 20 degrees.

My local weather was sunny and the high was about 19 C. Very warm weather continues unabated across eastern North America, turning what was going to be a cooler than normal May into a more average outcome.

    Wednesday, 1 June, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny with a few cloudy intervals more frequent in parts of Ulster, warm except for sea breezes which will not push inland very far. Highs inland will reach 21-24 C, but will remain 16-19 C near most coastlines, as variable sea breezes develop.

    TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, lows 6-10 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue sunny with cloudy intervals, perhaps somewhat more widespread by Friday but highs will remain similar (19-23 C). There could be a few isolated showers either day mostly in the inland west.

OUTLOOK for the WEEKEND including MONDAY will maintain generally warm and dry conditions with a slow increase in the risk of isolated showers or (by late Monday) outbreaks of light rain near west coast. So it should be a good to excellent weekend for most people, most of the time. Highs 18-23 C. Nights will perhaps be a little warmer than this week at 10-13 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for warm and humid conditions with increasing threats of rain at times, but some sunshine also, and highs remaining in the warm 19-23 C range.

My local weather was just about the same as your own on Tuesday, with sunshine that faded behind high cloud but warm temperatures in the 21-22 C range, and light winds.

    Thursday, 2 June, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny with a few cloudy intervals, warm. Highs 20-24 C for most, but could remain a little cooler near coasts in local sea breezes.

TONIGHT ... Clear but misty, some fog patches developing, lows 4-8 C.

FRIDAY ... Mixture of cloud and sunshine, isolated showers possible inland west, warm. Highs 20-24 C with local sea breeze cooling.

SATURDAY to MONDAY ... The bank holiday will continue warm, with more of an equal mixture of cloud and sunny breaks by day, extensive mist and low cloud at night, and quite warm generally, highs 21-25 C except 18-21 C near some coasts, and overnight lows 8-12 C. The risk of isolated showers or brief thunderstorms will be close to 20% for Saturday, rising to about 40% by Monday, but mostly over higher inland locations in central and western counties.

NEXT WEEK may bring some heavier showers and thunderstorms with frontal passages, and between these it could be very warm at times, in the 24-27 C range.

There will probably be a slightly cooler interlude in this long warm spell mid-June and quite possibly a reload of the warm conditions towards the end of June. Only slightly below average temperatures are indicated during the coolest part of this interlude and suggestions of a return to highs well into the 20s later in the month.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with outbreaks of light rain by afternoon, about 5 mm has fallen, and it was warm before the rain began, with highs near 23 C.

    Friday, 3 June, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny with cloudy intervals, more frequent in the northern counties. Warm, highs 18-23 C for most, 15-18 C locally due to sea breezes.

TONIGHT ... Extensive high cloud, with mist and fog patches developing, mild and close, lows 8-12 C.

SATURDAY ... Cloudy with sunny intervals, slight risk of showers inland southwest, warm. Highs 18-23 C. Rather humid.

SUNDAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny intervals, warm and muggy, some outbreaks of thundery showers possible inland west and north. Lows 10-13 C and highs 19-22 C.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy, warm, lows 10-13 C and highs 19-23 C. Risk of showers but these may be isolated (Sunday now looking more likely to see any significant outbreaks).

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY may bring even warmer weather and in a southerly flow it will be the south coast feeling the strongest sea breeze cooling rather than the east coast, so it may feel particularly warm in Leinster without the persistent sea breezes. Highs could reach 23-24 C in places.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for a few showers or intervals of rain, possible thunder, but clearing soon to follow, and just a little bit cooler although staying near or above the normal June readings (around 20-21 C).

My local weather on Thursday was overcast with sun dimly visible through mid-level cloud, and a strong southeast breeze, light showers around evening and feeling warmer (20 C) in advance of what's predicted to be a hot weekend here with highs reaching 30 C inland. Meanwhile, weak Tropical Depression Bonnie is trying to mount a comeback off the North Carolina coast and could briefly be back to tropical storm status today as it plods east.

    Forecasts for Ireland

Astronomy note: New moon will occur at 0400h Sunday meaning that the moon and Sun would be rising close together although separated by 5 degrees so there's no eclipse anywhere on earth.

TODAY ... A mixture of sunshine and cloud, with just a slight risk of showers in a few central counties, then later in east Connacht. Highs 21-24 C except 17-19 C near some coasts, in light and variable winds.

TONIGHT ... Hazy or misty with fog patches developing, mild. Lows 8-12 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, warm, isolated showers inland central, west. Highs generally 21-24 C, 18-20 C near some coasts.

MONDAY ... Cloudy with sunny intervals, warm, risk of showers somewhat greater again (30-40 per cent) but still mainly confined to central and inland western counties. Lows 11-14 C and highs 20-24 C.

TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY will continue warm with a slight risk of rain in western counties, lows 12-15 C and highs 21-25 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for little change, while some guidance introduces a slight cooling trend, this may just fade out and in any case the cooling would be a matter of 1-2 degrees. Therefore I think it will remain a little above normal for early to mid June, and there are no strong signals of large changes ahead, although rainfall may return to more normal levels with more frequent showers in the mix.

My local weather on Friday was cloudy in the morning, sunny by afternoon and warming up to near 25 C. We're expecting highs into the low 30s inland and the forecast for Portland Oregon is for record heat and 38 C. This heat has already built up in the desert southwest where Phoenix had a record high on Friday at 45 C.

    Sunday, 5 June, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Warm and humid with a few showers developing this afternoon and evening from about Laois northwest to Sligo. Rainfall amounts 5-10 mm possible in that region. Highs 21-25 C except slightly cooler near some coasts.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy intervals, mild. Lows 12-15 C.

MONDAY ... Warm and humid, showers once again in parts of the midlands and Connacht. Highs 21-25 C.

TUESDAY ... Somewhat more extensive showers are likely, but it will remain warm and there could be some sunshine at times, lows 12-15 C and highs 20 to 24 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Sunny intervals, very warm. Lows 11-14 C and highs 22-26 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will see a gradual cooling trend with occasional showers, highs near 22 C on Thursday and 19 C on Friday.

The outlook for the following weekend at this point is unsettled and cooler with highs 17-18 C. This may continue for a few days, but eventually a warmer trend will probably redevelop.

My local weather on Saturday was sunny and hot, highs inland reached 30 C but it stayed a bit cooler near the coast.

    Monday, 6 June, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Very warm and humid, a few sunny breaks but mostly cloudy, outbreaks of thundery showers likely this afternoon in parts of central and inland northern counties. Highs 22-25 C.

TONIGHT ... Very mild, showers ending, lows 12-15 C.

TUESDAY ... Variable cloud, warm, a few showers or thunderstorms. Highs about 22-24 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Sunny intervals, very warm. Lows 12-15 C and highs 22-26 C.

THURSDAY ... Partly cloudy, increasing risk of showers from west, lows 12-15 and highs 20-23 C.

FRIDAY to SUNDAY will bring a more normal temperature regime with highs of about 18-21 C and also more frequent showers, or intervals of rain, some of them heavy in parts of the north where 30-50 mm could fall during the period. The south is expected to remain somewhat dry with 5-15 mm rainfalls.

FURTHER OUTLOOK indicates that this more seasonable weather may hold for the following week, but there are some signs of a much warmer end of June.

My local weather was sunny and hot with record highs all over the region. It was near 34 C inland in southern B.C. and most of Washington state and as high as 38 C at Portland Oregon, breaking a record from 2003 (but records go back well into the 19th century there). The eastern half of North America has seen temperatures closer to normal early June values, with frequent showers and gusty winds.

    Tuesday, 7 June, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Warm and humid, some further thundery showers in parts of Ulster and north Leinster this morning, otherwise generally dry to the afternoon when several more clusters of showers or thunderstorms could develop in various parts of the country, about 30-40 per cent coverage is expected, some heavy falls but mostly 3-7 mm. Highs 21-25 C.

TONIGHT ... Continued warm with showers generally dying out, some mist and fog patches, lows 12-16 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Hazy sunshine, isolated showers or thunderstorms, very warm and humid, highs 22-26 C.

THURSDAY ... Cloudy, frequent showers or thunderstorms, 10-20 mm likely, lows 12-16 C and highs 21-24 C.

FRIDAY ... Variable cloud, fresher and less humid, more showers developing. Lows 10-13 C and highs 18-21 C.

SATURDAY ... Partly cloudy, heavy showers possible, lows 8-11 C, highs 17 to 19 C.

SUNDAY to TUESDAY will be a cooler interval with occasional rain and highs near 16 C.

There are indications of a gradual return to warmer weather later in the week and more definitely towards the end of June.

My local weather continues sunny and hot, the high on Monday was about 29 and this should continue one more day before we also get into more normal temperatures later in the week. The core of the heat is moving east into the plains states. Tropical Storm Colin formed earlier Monday and has spread heavy rain into the southeastern states, the centre will quickly move from the Florida panhandle to coastal Georgia and out past Cape Hatteras. Some moisture from this storm may get mixed into the unsettled weather expected over the weekend but it won't survive as a tropical system very long after mid-week.

    Wednesday, 8 June, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Hazy sunshine with some cloudy intervals, slight risk of an isolated shower or thunderstorm (probably well inland due to converging sea breezes). Highs 22-26 C.

TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, quite warm again with lows 12-16 C.

THURSDAY ... Cloudy with sunny intervals, 30-40% chance of showers or thunderstorms giving 5-15 mm where they occur, and still quite warm at 21 to 24 C.

FRIDAY ... Variable cloud, a few showers in most locations, 5-10 mm rain the most likely amount, and lows 10-13 C, highs 18-22 C.

SATURDAY ... Partly cloudy, a few showers, seasonable temperatures, lows about 9 C and highs about 19 C.

SUNDAY ... Early morning heavy showers and possible thunder, gusty winds and turning somewhat cooler, fresher during the day, lows 10-12 C and highs about 17 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... A rather weak cooling trend associated with slow-moving upper low pressure will probably bring quite average weather with a mix of cloud and sun, some showers most days, and temperatures near mid-June normals (lows near 8 C and highs near 20 C). I would still place a fair amount of confidence in a return of the current very warm conditions late in the month.

My local weather had sunshine dimmed by increasing high cloud and it remained quite warm at 25 C. The overcast is thick enough now to produce a few drops of drizzly light rain and our warm spell is probably more or less done for about a week now. Our weather (in Ireland and western Canada) seems to be more or less in phase recently although not to the nearest day. Meanwhile Colin has lost tropical characteristics and is just a plain old low, albeit quite a strong one for June, southeast of Boston (off Cape Cod) tonight.

    Thursday, 9 June, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly cloudy, warm and humid. Isolated showers mainly inland north, could produce a localized thunderstorm. Some fog near east and south coasts as breezes become more consistently southeast at 20-40 km/hr. Highs about 21-24 C.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy intervals, warm and humid, lows 12-15 C.

FRIDAY ... Cloudy with sunny breaks, more widespread showers likely and a few heavier ones becoming thundery. Rainfall generally 5-10 mm but could be locally as heavy as 20 mm. Highs 20-23 C.

SATURDAY ... Partly cloudy, a few isolated showers, not quite as warm, lows around 9-11 C and highs 18-22 C. Overnight, some heavier showers and gusty southwest to west winds are likely. This will be the end of the warm spell as Atlantic air will begin to dominate again.

SUNDAY ... Variable cloud, passing showers, sometimes breezy. ...
    Lows 8 to 10 C and highs 17 to 19 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Next week will generally be closer to normal temperatures and it may even get somewhat cooler than average for a day or two around the latter portions of the week, followed by a gradual return to warmer than average conditions that should set in during the last third of the month.

My local weather was overcast with spells of light rain and a cooler high near 17 C. In the eastern U.S., Wednesday was quite a cool day with a showery cold front followed by gusty northwest winds and temperatures that actually fell during the mid-day hours to levels rarely seen, for example, 11 C at New York's Central Park at about 2 p.m. -- normally it's about 25 C there at this time of year.

    Friday, 10 June, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Persistent light rain with a few heavier intervals, possibly thundery (these mostly in west-central counties) but some partial clearing here and there by afternoon, still quite warm and humid, highs 18-22 C. About 5-10 mm of rain for most, locally 15 mm possible.

TONIGHT ... Misty, light rain at times, mild. Lows 11-13 C.

SATURDAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny intervals, occasional showers. Some heavier showers or periods of rain during the evening in western counties spreading to eastern counties overnight. About 10 mm of rain for most, highs generally about 18-20 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy to overcast, breezy, occasional showers (about 5 mm further rainfall during the daytime portion of the day). Lows 7-10 C and highs 16-19 C.

OUTLOOK ... Next week will be generally unsettled with near normal temperatures, highs 17-20 C and lows 7-10 C. Each day will probably have some showers in most places and dry days will be unusual but one or two places (probably near south coast) will manage one or two of them. The second week into the outlook period, according to guidance, will continue unsettled although quite warm, but sometimes that sort of pattern shifts north and leaves at least the southern half of the country in a warmer, dry pattern so watch for that theme to show up. On the basis of the maps alone, highs in that second week would average about 21-23 C. Some outbreaks of heavy rain or thunderstorms appear possible in the north where lows will track closer on their way past Ireland in a generally west-southwest "zonal" flow.

Meanwhile, my local weather was overcast but rain held off here at least, with the high near 16 C. The warmest part of North America this week will be the central plains states, but the east is also warming back towards normal June values.
