    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, blustery, some squally showers possible with hail or thunder, these most likely in west Munster during the afternoon, with winds westerly 40-60 km/hr, and rather cool, highs near 16 C west, 18 C east. Rainfalls 3-7 mm.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with a few clear intervals, isolated showers, moderate northwest breezes will continue in coastal districts, lows 7-9 C.

TUESDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, moderate northwest breezes, cool with highs near 17 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Partly cloudy, a few showers, moderate northwest breezes continuing, and cool, lows 6-8 C and highs near 17 C.

THURSDAY ... Sunny intervals for the east and south, a little warmer, highs near 20 C. Cloud will increase across the west and north rather quickly and a band of rain is likely, with a risk of thunder, extending to the east coast by evening.

FRIDAY ... Warmer and quite humid, risk of showers and thunderstorms, lows near 16 C and highs near 23 C.

SATURDAY ... Partly cloudy, breezy or windy, isolated showers, lows near 14 and highs near 20 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, risk of showers, highs near 21 C.

OUTLOOK ... Most of the following week looks rather cool on current guidance, with highs gradually falling back towards 17-18 C during the week, and occasional showers continuing. In general, this month looks as though it will finish near normal in temperatures and below normal in sunshine, while perhaps slightly above normal in rainfall although the pace has been fairly close to normal so far.

My local weather on Sunday showed minor improvement with a few sunny intervals and generally dry weather locally although heavy shower clouds were visible over the western and northern horizons. The high was about 22 C.

TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, cool. Lows 6-9 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Cloudy with sunny intervals, isolated showers, west to northwest breezes. Highs 16-19 C.

THURSDAY ... A clear morning in the south and east, becoming cloudy west and north. Light winds except for increasing southerly breezes near Atlantic coasts where rain will likely come and go as a warm front passes. Morning lows 5 to 8 C, but warmer in the daytime with highs 18-21 C.

FRIDAY ... Warm and humid, risk of showers and thunderstorms, lows 13 to 16 and highs 21 to 23 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with sunny intervals, a few showers this morning, better chance of sunshine by afternoon in cool west to northwest breezes 30-50 km/hr and highs 16-19 C.

TONIGHT ... Clear except for some patchy low cloud near coasts, rather cool for mid-July, lows 5-8 C.

THURSDAY ... A clear morning in the south and east, becoming cloudy west and north. Light winds except for increasing southerly breezes near Atlantic coasts where rain will likely come and go as a warm front passes during the late afternoon. Morning lows 5 to 8 C, but warmer in the daytime with highs 18-21 C, warmest in the inland south and east.

FRIDAY ... Warm and humid, risk of showers and thunderstorms, more like a steady rain in parts of Ulster and north Leinster where 10-15 mm likely, with lows 13 to 16 and highs 21 to 23 C. Moderate southwest winds at times.

SATURDAY ... Variable cloud, risk of showers and isolated thunderstorms, lows 12-14 and highs 19 to 22 C, warm in the south and east. Moderate westerly winds 40-60 km/hr.

SUNDAY ... After a partly cloudy night with lows near 9 C, the day will continue rather warm in the south, with highs near 20 C. A frontal zone in central and northern regions may result in cloudy and at times showery conditions with temperatures held down to about 15-17 C. Rather slack gradients will result in light but variable winds.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy, late showers, warmer again for most regions, highs near 21 or 22 C.

OUTLOOK ... Temperatures will gradually fall off next week and may become quite cool for July by about Thursday, with the flow becoming gradually more westerly then northwesterly. Highs each day are likely to be 1-2 degrees lower until reaching 15-17 C at their low point, with a gradual recovery to follow.

For the Open golf (at Troon in Ayrshire, Scotland) the forecasts for Ulster above will give a rough indication but more specifically, expect Thursday to be a fair day with increasing cloud and moderate south winds by late afternoon, highs about 17 C, then Friday will feature a period of rain and moderate south to southwest winds with some partial clearing later, highs near 18 C. The weekend, both days are likely to be fairly bland, moderate westerly breezes and variable cloud with the ongoing risk of a brief shower. Generally speaking rain delays look unlikely.

My local weather on Tuesday was mostly cloudy although the sun did find a few chances to poke through, and also some light showers developed here and there, it was warm and quite humid at 22 C and just about dead calm on the golf course (thus depriving me of my favourite excuse). At the rate people are shunning Rio, you may see me there, I am number 47823 on the list. And I am way past caring about mosquitoes (you were expecting something else, admit it).

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny with increasing cloud this afternoon, although more cloud from mid-morning in the west. Rain, rather light and intermittent, will move into western counties in the late afternoon and into some parts of the northeast by evening. Highs near 20 C for most. Light winds backing to southerly and picking up by afternoon in western counties to 30-40 km/hr.

TONIGHT ... Rain will move gradually across the north, with 10-15 mm possible there. Showers or just cloudy further south. Much milder, in south to southwest breezes, lows 11-14 C.

FRIDAY ... Warm and humid, intermittent rain in parts of Ulster and north Leinster will tend to die out before redeveloping across central regions by evening. Moderate southwest winds 30-50 km/hr. Highs 20-23 C except around 18 C in Ulster.

SATURDAY ... Early morning rain should begin to fragment to light showers by mid-morning in the southeast and otherwise a dry day will unfold in most regions with moderate westerly breezes, not quite as warm although pleasant with morning lows 10-12 C and afternoon highs 18-21 C.

SUNDAY ... A weak front across north-central counties will bring more cloud to the north while sunny intervals may dominate in the south. Morning lows of about 8-10 C then afternoon highs near 20 C in the south, 17 C north.

MONDAY and TUESDAY are currently looking reasonably warm and dry, although there could be patchy light rain at times in Ulster and north Connacht. Highs will range from 21 C in the inland southeast to 16 C in parts of Ulster.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... The weather is likely to become cooler and somewhat more unsettled mid-week as low pressure tracks out of France across southern England, in those regions heavier rain is likely, but for Ireland it will be a case of hit or miss showers in weakly organized bands, and highs in the 18-21 C range for most.

My local weather on Wednesday was mostly sunny and the high was about 21.

    Forecasts for Ireland

I have combined some details for Britain with the usual Ireland forecasts as we enter a peak travel season and because of interest in the Open golf.

TODAY ... Warm and humid, heavy morning rain becoming intermittent showers by mid-day in parts of Ulster and north Leinster, and this will tend to die out before redeveloping across central regions by evening. Moderate southwest winds 30-50 km/hr. Highs 20-23 C except around 16 to 18 C in Ulster. About 10-20 mm rain likely in the north. The heavier rain will cover most of Scotland and northern England by mid-day also, the south will remain relatively dry. At the Open golf site, the heaviest rain will occur about 1100h to mid-afternoon, winds will veer from south to southwest 40-60 km/hr there making for a very difficult day on the links.

TONIGHT ... The next band of rain will slowly sink south from a Galway to Dublin line towards the south coast by morning, 5-10 mm will fall from this, and the north will only have isolated showers, as temperatures slowly fall to about 10-12 C by morning in all regions.

SATURDAY ... Early morning rain should begin to fragment to light showers by mid-day near the south coast and otherwise a dry day will unfold in most regions with moderate westerly breezes, not quite as warm although pleasant with morning lows 10-12 C and afternoon highs 18-21 C. The warmest mid-day and afternoon conditions will be from about Clare to Wicklow and Dublin between the decaying southern front and more persistent cloud across the north. Highs about 17 C in some of those regions. The frontal band will also be slow-moving southward across parts of central Wales and England. It will be about 24 C to the south of that band.

SUNDAY ... A weak front across north-central counties will bring more cloud to the north while sunny intervals may dominate in the south. Morning lows of about 8-10 C then afternoon highs near 20 C in the south, 17 C north. Similar contrasts can be expected across Britain.

MONDAY and TUESDAY are currently looking reasonably warm and dry, although there could be patchy light rain at times in Ulster and north Connacht. Highs will range from 21 C in the inland southeast to 16 C in parts of Ulster. Over in Britain these days may be even warmer at about 23-27 C in the south, more similar to Ireland in north Wales, northern England and Scotland.

WEDNESDAY ... Showers and cooler northwest winds developing in the wake of a strong disturbance moving out of France towards south central England. In those regions some heavy thundery rain may develop giving 30-50 mm downpours, but in Ireland amounts are likely to be much less (5-10 mm). Temperatures will be steady in the 15-18 C range in most of Ireland and westerrn, northern Britain, and will fall from the mid-20s to that range in southeast England late in the day.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will likely continue rather cool in all parts of Ireland and Britain, with moderate west to northwest winds, showers at times, and highs near 18 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Slightly warmer again by next weekend, but the models feature a very chilly end to July (this of course has only medium confidence levels being two weeks away), current GFS maps suggest very chilly and windy conditions with heavy showers around the last two days of the month, so we'll have to see if any of that materializes.

My local weather on Thursday was partly cloudy and seasonably warm at about 21 C. It has turned quite hot in eastern North America after a few cooler days at least north of the Virginias, heat has been sustained further south.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... As a band of light rain continues to fragment to showers in south coastal counties, partly cloudy and quite warm for central counties and most of Leinster, with highs reaching 22 C. The far north may see some occasional light rain although most of it remains offshore feeding into western Scotland where it will bring showers to the Open golf site (14-17 C there).

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals, warm, lows 10-13 C.

SUNDAY ... Sunny intervals, warm. There may be some residual cloud near south coast and across the far north, but almost everyone will have a sunny and warm day with highs of 21-23 C.

MONDAY ... Hazy sunshine, increasing cloud south, west. Warm. Lows 10-13 and highs 21-24 C.

TUESDAY ... Increasing cloud, warm. Outbreaks of thundery showers possible in the inland southeast and parts of west Munster. Lows 12-15 C and highs about 21 C although held down to 17-19 C in parts of the northwest.

    WEDNESDAY ... Variable cloud, showers, lows 10-13 C and highs 18-21 C.

OUTLOOK ... Somewhat cooler with showers possible again towards the end of the week. Highs 17-19 C. A little warmer by the following weekend, but that cool end of month signal remains in the mix too.

My local weather on Friday was cloudy with some sunny breaks and rather warm with highs near 22 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny intervals, warm. There may be some residual cloud near south coast and across the far north, but almost everyone will have a sunny and warm day with highs of 21-23 C. There is a slight risk of rain, low cloud and fog in the northern coastal portions of Ulster. At the Open golf, expect a moderately breezy and "close" day with mostly cloudy skies, possible intervals of light rain, and highs near 19 C.

TONIGHT ... Hazy, warm with fog likely especially near coasts and over hills, lows around 14 to 17 C.

MONDAY ... Hazy sunshine, increasing cloud south, west. Warm, highs 21-24 C.

TUESDAY ... Increasing cloud, warm. Outbreaks of thundery showers possible in the inland southeast and parts of west Munster then later in Connacht and west Ulster, cells will be moving north to northwest. Lows 12-15 C and highs about 22 to 25 C although held down to 17-19 C in parts of the northwest. There may be further thunderstorms overnight into Wednesday morning in the southeast and around Dublin. It will be hot and humid in southern Britain, highs 27-29 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Variable cloud, showers, lows 10-13 C west, 13-17 C east, and highs 18-21 C. There could be an interval of heavy rain moving up the east coast although this is more certain over the Irish Sea and into western Scotland. When all this develops, the heat over southern England will be pushed to the east coast and heavy storms could develop north and west of London.

OUTLOOK ... Thursday and Friday are now looking somewhat cooler with more showers likely, temperatures near normal (highs 19-22 C). Southern Britain, however, will be a little warmer at 22-24 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Little change to the pattern, but a slide down to mid-teens during the week following at the end of July. However, that could change as it's quite a long way off, and for the time being the trend is warmer than average for about a week.

My local weather on Saturday was pleasant, it was mostly cloudy but the sun broke through at times, and it was reasonably warm (23 C) and quite humid for this part of the world. Everyone seems to agree this has been the cloudiest summer in many years around here, balancing out the exceptionally warm (and dry) spring that we enjoyed. By everyone, I mean the ten people that I know and the TV talking heads.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Warm and humid with hazy sunshine except for some onshore low cloud or fog near south coast and somewhat more cloud in Ulster. Just a very slight risk of a brief shower by afternoon in the northeast. Highs generally 21-24 C, possibly a bit cooler in outer coastal districts.

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals although hazy, full moon low in south (actual timing for that is Tuesday night at 11:57 p.m. Irish/British summer time). Warm with lows around 15 C, a bit higher in urban areas.

TUESDAY ... Variable cloud in west and north, sunny spells south and east. Hot and humid with highs inland 24-26 C, held to about 17-19 C in parts of north and near some onshore coasts in a moderate southerly breeze. Showers and possible thunderstorms from west Ulster to midlands by late in the day. Rainfalls in these areas could be 5-10 mm with the slight risk of very localized heavier amounts (these most likely around Sligo and Donegal). We will need to keep an eye on local flash flooding potential in those counties.

WEDNESDAY ... Early morning heavy showers or thunderstorms possible in Leinster, more likely over Irish Sea and western Britain though, remaining very warm in east (lows 15-17 C), turning cooler and fresher in west (lows 10-13 C). The day will then turn out partly cloudy with a few more isolated showers in a southwest breeze, highs 18-21 C.

THURSDAY ... Sunny at first, then becoming cloudy with heavy showers and possible thunderstorms. A general 10-15 mm rainfall seems likely. Lows 8-11 C and highs 17-21 C warmest in the southeast.

FRIDAY ... Showers continuing, some partial clearing later, lows 10-13 C and highs about 18 C.

    SATURDAY ... Showers, highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, breezy, isolated showers, highs near 18 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... The final week of July is likely to be a bit on the cool side especially compared to this week, and highs will be generally 17-20 C. There will probably be showers here and there on most days but on the whole near average rainfall.

Over in BRITAIN, the heat will be more intense both today and Tuesday, at least south of about Lancashire to Yorkshire. Highs will reach 27 C today and 30 C in some places on Tuesday. There will then be an outbreak of heavy and possibly severe storms in some parts overnight into Wednesday and the heat will be slowly pushed east, but it will hit about 29-30 C again in London and the southeast. From about Thursday onward, conditions will become more similar to the Ireland forecast above. Some modified warmth will return around Saturday but not likely much higher than the 22-24 C range.

My local weather on Sunday was sunny, hazy and warm with highs near 25 C. The heat across eastern regions of North America will be terminated by heavy thunderstorms in some parts of the Great Lakes and inland northeast today. Some severe storms are likely there.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly cloudy in west and north, mostly sunny but hazy south and east. Hot and humid with highs inland 25-28 C, held to about 17-19 C in parts of north and near some onshore coasts in a moderate southerly breeze, 23 to 25 C in west. Showers and possible thunderstorms from west Ulster and north Connacht to midlands by late in the day. Rainfalls in these areas could be 5-10 mm with the slight risk of very localized heavier amounts (these most likely around Sligo and Donegal). We will need to keep an eye on local flash flooding potential in those counties (Sligo town to Letterkenny most at risk). At the same time, most of the south and parts of the east will remain dry.

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals for Munster and south Connacht, with a full moon (exact timing is 11:57 p.m.) while further showers and thunderstorms will tend to die out in northwest, but with some potential to flare up to heavier intensity near east coast after midnight (this activity, currently northwest of Spain, is expected to move across the Irish Sea into southwest Scotland, lightning may be visible to the east if this does not actually cross land in southeast Ireland). Lows 10-13 C west and 15-17 C east.

WEDNESDAY ... Early morning heavy showers or thunderstorms possible in Leinster, more likely over Irish Sea and western Britain though, remaining very warm in east (lows 15-17 C), turning cooler and fresher in west (lows 10-13 C). The day will then turn out partly cloudy (sunny in parts of south, east and central counties) with a few more isolated showers mainly around northwest coasts, in a southwest breeze 30-50 km/hr, with highs 18-22 C, warmest in the southeast.

THURSDAY ... Sunny at first, then becoming cloudy with heavy showers and possible thunderstorms. A general 10-15 mm rainfall seems likely overnight into Friday morning. Lows 8-11 C and highs 17-21 C warmest in the southeast.

FRIDAY ... Showers continuing, some partial clearing later, lows 10-13 C and highs about 18 C.

    SATURDAY ... Showers, highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, breezy, isolated showers, highs near 18 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Next week continues to look rather cool for late July with frequent showers and highs 16-19 C.

In BRITAIN the heat today will peak at about 31 C in some parts of the south, and it will remain near or above 20 C tonight. Heavy storms will develop overnight and last into Wednesday mid-day in parts of central to northern England and southwest Scotland. Cooler air will gradually push east on Wednesday but southeast England will once again be hot and humid with highs near 30 C, late thunderstorms are possible there. The cooling trend will cover all regions by Thursday.

My local weather on Monday was sunny, hazy and very warm (25 C). There were heavy storms last night and again tonight over parts of the nearby Coast Range but nothing very close to my location.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with drizzle or light rain at first, soon breaking to partly cloudy with long sunny intervals likely mid-day and afternoon. One or two isolated showers may develop in parts of the north after the clearing trend, but for many it will become a dry and pleasant day with much lower temperatures and humidity, highs 18-21 C.

TONIGHT ... Increasing cloud, outbreaks of light rain before morning in parts of Munster and coastal Connacht. Lows 9-13 C.

THURSDAY ... Showers and a few bursts of heavy rain likely, isolated thunder possible. A partial clearance will follow from the west by late afternoon. Highs 18-21 C.

FRIDAY ... Variable cloud, a few brief showers, breezy. Lows 10-13 C and highs about 20 C.

SATURDAY ... Showers heavy at times, risk of thunder. Lows 8-12 C and highs 19-22 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, breezy, isolated showers. Lows 8-12 C and highs about 19 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... The final week of July will probably continue a bit on the unsettled side with near normal or slightly below normal temperatures with highs generally around 18-20 C.

For BRITAIN today, widespread thunderstorms in northern England, Wales and Scotland will continue for much of the day with highs in these regions around 19 or 20 C. Southwest England will have a partly cloudy and breezy day with highs near 24 C, lower humidity levels than yesterday. Southeast England will start out hot and humid, highs will quickly reach 30 C and then heavy and isolated severe storms will develop, with a cooling trend to follow, with gusty southwest winds to 80 km/hr in storms, 60 km/hr otherwise. Some severe storms are also likely in parts of northern France.

My local weather on Tuesday was overcast with a few brief sunny breaks and it was rather cool at 20-21 C.

SATURDAY ... Showers and isolated thunderstorms, lows near 12 C and highs near 20 C.

SUNDAY ... Variable cloud, more showers likely, some heavier bursts of rain by end of the day in Leinster. Lows near 11 C and highs near 19 C.

OUTLOOK ... Continued rather unsettled and slightly on the cool side most of next week. Another warm spell could follow in early August though.

My local weather on Wednesday was sunny and warmer at about 24 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

An interval of heavy rain on the weekend may at least sweep through overnight (late Saturday) leaving some decent dry spells for the daytime hours. Today will be reasonably dry, and next week is looking a bit unsettled but by no means a washout. Then there are signs of another warm spell developing by the first weekend of August.

TODAY ... Cloudy with sunny intervals developing, just a few rather brief and light showers mainly confined to northwest coastal areas this morning. Highs about 19 or 20 C.

TONIGHT ... Variable cloud, chance of a little light rain in west and north. Lows about 12 C.

SATURDAY ... Sunny intervals then increasing cloud, heavy rain approaching west coast late afternoon arriving by evening there, as south to southwest winds become gusty at 40-60 km/hr. Highs 18-21 C.

SUNDAY ... Early morning rain heaviest in Connacht and Ulster where 20 mm could fall, about 5-10 mm further south, then this rain should fragment to occasional showers during the morning daytime hours leading to some sunny spells by afternoon. Lows near 14 C and highs near 20 C.

OUTLOOK ... Generally rather cool next week in mainly west to northwest breezes, highs each day 17 to 19 C for most, 20 C possible near east and south coasts, and a few showers at times, but some days featuring more sunshine. This pattern is not expected to change much until near the end of the weekend of 30-31 July then the first week of August should become a little warmer with some prospect of another significant warm spell developing.

My local weather on Thursday was mostly sunny and warm with highs of about 26 C then it has clouded over this evening with the risk of a few light showers during the day Friday. Heavy thunderstorms moved across the upper Great Lakes region on Thursday. During the early morning there were some deaths and injuries reported in wilderness areas near the U.S.-Canada border west of Lake Superior when a tornado tore up a campground. That line of storms had produced tornadoes in Manitoba earlier (late Wednesday). And to the south of these fronts it remains very hot and humid. Chicago was hit by strong wind gusts and heavy rains late Thursday from remnants of the same frontal system.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny intervals, scattered light showers tending to die out as they move towards the east. Highs 18-21 C.

TONIGHT ... Intervals of steady rain, heavier near the south coast and around Donegal Bay, in either case 5-10 mm could fall there, otherwise 2-5 mm in most central districts. Lows 12-14 C.

SUNDAY ... Morning showers, partial clearing by afternoon, highs 18-21 C.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy, somewhat cooler with a few showers, moderate westerly breezes 30-50 km/hr. Lows 8-10 C and highs 16-19 C.

    TUESDAY ... Partly cloudy, showers. Lows 8-10 C and highs 16-19 C.

OUTLOOK ... Similar weather will prevail for the rest of the week also. Next weekend could turn quite cool but after that, a slow warming trend is likely in early August.

My local weather on Friday was mostly cloudy and rather cool with rumbles of thunder around sunrise then a few light showers during the morning, nothing measurable though. Highs reached about 20 C. Friday was the warmest day of the summer so far in New York (36 C) and Boston (37 C). Those are not humidex values either, raw temperatures -- the humidex was probably well into the 40s.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Heavy showers this morning in Leinster (10-15 mm) will gradually ease off before mid-day and some brighter intervals will follow. A second area of moderately heavy showers will then move into Connacht and west Ulster (with 5-10 mm likely). Munster will have the least rain today (about 1-3 mm) and the best chance for sunny breaks. Highs 17-20 C, rather humid. Moderate westerly winds developing this afternoon.

    TONIGHT ... A few showers, lows near 9 C.

MONDAY and TUESDAY ... Partly cloudy, breezy and rather cool with passing showers, highs about 16 to 19 C. Morning lows both days near 9 C.

WEDNESDAY will be overcast with periods of rain, heavy at times. Highs will be around 18 C.

THURSDAY to SATURDAY will continue rather cool and breezy with further showers but also some brief sunny intervals, highs near 17 C.

SUNDAY 31st July and MONDAY 1st August are likely to become a bit warmer and more humid with risk of some heavy showers.

The first week to ten days of August appears rather warm with improving chances of dry and sunny weather as higher pressure builds in. The pattern could easily turn into quite a significant warm spell.

My local weather on Saturday was partly cloudy and the high was about 23 C.

It continues very hot in eastern and central North America, especially in Kansas where highs of 42 C were recorded, humidex near 50 C (dangerous levels indeed). Toronto had a high of 34 C and Boston 37 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mixture of sun and cloud at first, then increasing cloudiness, some rain likely by evening. Highs near 18 C.

TONIGHT ... Intervals of rain, heavy at times in Connacht and Ulster (10-20 mm likely there, 3-7 mm for Munster, Leinster). Lows 11-13 C.

THURSDAY ... Rain becoming showery across the north, partial clearing for central and southern counties but a few showers developing later, rather cool in the north with highs 14-17 C, somewhat warmer and quite humid in the south until mid-day, then turning cooler. Highs 18-20 C.

FRIDAY ... Variable cloud, breezy and cool with passing showers, highs about 14 C northwest to 18 C southeast.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Rather cool, mostly dry including the first part of the holiday Monday, risk of rain arriving later Monday, timing uncertain this far in advance but likely to be afternoon or evening for west Munster, evening elsewhere. Highs each day about 17 to 19 C, possibly a bit cooler in parts of the north.

My local weather as I finished a quick road trip across parts of southern B.C., was mostly cloudy on Tuesday with frequent showers and some thunder, and it was about 24 C. Monday was quite hot as I mentioned, unfortunately the internet connection that I was expecting to be good turned out to be rather intermittent so I had to forego posting anything more than the brief message that you found. And a bit late this "morning" but should be back to the usual schedule now.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Most of the rain ahead of an approaching low has now fallen, but east Ulster will continue to see another 5-10 mm. Further showers will develop mainly in north Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster, with skies more partly cloudy in the south, where moderate southwest winds 40-60 km/hr will develop. Highs will reach 20 C in the south, about 18 C central and only about 15 C north.

TONIGHT ... A few brief showers as it turns somewhat cooler from north to south overnight, lows 8-10 C north, 10-12 C south. Winds veering to westerly 30-50 km/hr.

FRIDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, moderate west to northwest breezes. Highs 15-19 C, warmest near south coast.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... All three days of the Bank Holiday weekend should be mainly dry but there will be isolated showers around in parts of the north. Despite that, most places should have a mainly dry weekend with cool temperatures for time of year. Highs will be in the range of 17-19 C, overnight lows about 8-10 C. Winds moderate northwest on Saturday will fall off to light westerly on Sunday and variable, becoming southeast on Monday. Any rain approaching west Munster on Monday afternoon or evening is expected to hold off now, as part of that system shears off and heads south of the Irish coast towards France.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Overcast and windy on Tuesday with periods of rain, mild and humid with highs 19-20 C. The rest of the week looks fairly close to average early August conditions with highs near 21 C.

My local weather on Wednesday was sunny and warm with highs near 25 C.

    Friday, 29 July, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, but a few sunny intervals will develop by afternoon, as a few morning showers move away to the southeast. Moderate northwest to north winds 30-50 km/hr, and feeling rather cool, highs about 16 C north to 19 or 20 C south.

TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, lows 8-10 C.

SATURDAY ... A mixture of cloud and sunshine, isolated showers mainly in the north and west, highs 16-19 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, lows 8-10 C and highs 16-19 C.

MONDAY ... Sunny intervals north and east, mostly cloudy in Munster where some rain may develop late in the day. Lows 7-9 C and highs 17-20 C.

TUESDAY ... Morning rain will be heavier near south and west coasts, partial clearance to warm and humid conditions, lows 11-14 C and highs 18-22 C.

OUTLOOK ... Slightly cooler mid-week then warming back into low or even mid 20s later in the week and towards the following weekend (6-7 August).

My local weather on Thursday was sunny and very warm, highs near 27 C.

If you find any clear skies over this coming weekend, you'll be able to see a triangle of bright planets and one star low in the south. Mars is the brightest object on the right side of this triangle (towards the west), Saturn is the object at the highest point of the triangle and Antares is the third member almost directly below Saturn. There are two less prominent stars visible in the triangle also. The Moon is rising quite late in the early morning hours, and won't dim the view.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... A mixture of cloud and sunshine, isolated showers mainly in the north and west, spreading across Ulster towards north Leinster by late afternoon, some chance of showers further south by evening also, with highs 16-19 C.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with a few clear intervals, lows 8-10 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, lows 8-10 C and highs 16-19 C.

MONDAY ... Sunny intervals north and east during the morning, mostly cloudy in Munster where some rain may develop during the day. There now appears to be some risk of this rain turning heavy and spreading across the south during the late afternoon and evening hours. Lows 7-9 C and highs 17-20 C.

TUESDAY ... Morning rain will be heavier near south and west coasts, partial clearance to warm and humid conditions, lows 11-14 C and highs 18-22 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Variable cloudiness, breezy and somewhat cooler again with a few showers or intervals of light rain, highs near 17 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Near normal temperatures, some dry intervals then a spell of strong winds and heavy rainfall possible around the end of the weekend of 6-7 August, or into Monday 8th. This disturbance looks quite strong on several global models already.

My local weather on Friday was sunny and very warm with highs near 28 C. We're expecting a dry but cooler weekend here and rain on Monday which is also a holiday.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny breaks, occasional light showers but amounts generally slight (1-3 mm), highs 16-19 C.

TONIGHT ... Occasional rain spreading across the south, about 5-10 mm in some parts of Munster, foggy especially over higher ground, some clear intervals in Ulster may allow it to cool off to around 7 C there, while lows in most other places will be 10-13 C.

MONDAY ... Rain at times in south, another 5 mm likely, but it seems that this system will begin to fragment while redeveloping southeast of Ireland for a run at southern England which will be quite wet. The northern half of Ireland meanwhile will only see sporadic light showers and some places in Ulster could remain largely dry. Highs will reach about 18 C.

TUESDAY ... Breezy, rather warm and humid, a few intervals of light rain, winds increasing to southwest 40-60 km/hr, lows near 13 C and highs 19 to 21 C, with any sun it will feel warm and muggy.

WEDNESDAY ... Cloudy, breezy and not quite as warm, occasional light rain mostly in northern regions, lows near 10 C and highs near 17 C.

OUTLOOK ... Turning quite warm and windy towards the end of the week and into the weekend as a strong low pushes north of Donegal by Sunday. Highs could reach 22-24 C and winds southwest 50-80 km/hr. There will be frontal bands of heavy rain involved with this but they may not last all that long with sunny intervals between their passage.

Beyond that weekend of 6-7 August, charts are indicating an interval of fair weather that could be warm or even locally hot, details may change on this so at this range we'll just say that mid-August could be a summery spell to rival if not surpass anything early June or mid-July managed to produce.

My local weather on Saturday started cloudy but this broke very quickly around 11:00 and it was sunny and breezy for the rest of the day with a high near 24 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

Well, the banks may have a holiday but the rain train decided to put in a day's work ...

at least in the southern half of the country ...

TODAY ... Intervals of rain may be heavy at times this morning in the south, and there will be a slow northward drift of this band of rain although some parts of Ulster and north Leinster, even north Connacht could remain dry for a good part of the day. Highs 15-18 C. Rainfalls about 10-15 mm south.

TONIGHT ... Foggy or low cloud, drizzle or light rain, lows 11-14 C.

TUESDAY ... Showers, then some clearing, warm and humid, sunny intervals developing by afternoon, winds SW 50-70 km/hr. Highs 19-23 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Breezy to windy (especially near Atlantic coasts), westerly about 50-80 km/hr at times, a few showers heavier in north and west, with lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.

THURSDAY ... Breezy, isolated showers, partly cloudy. Lows near 9 C and highs near 19 C.

FRIDAY ... Sunny intervals, pleasantly warm at 20 - 22 C. Becoming quite windy late in the day as southerly gales spread into Atlantic and south coast counties.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Very windy but warm on Saturday 6th, some passing showers but also some sunny breaks, winds southwest 60-100 km/hr. Highs about 23 C. Sunday will continue rather windy but somewhat cooler at 18-20 degrees.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Somewhat cooler for a few days in the second week of August then prospects for a warming trend mid-month that may lead to a good warm spell some time after the 15th. Details on that are bound to change this far out but the signal has been fairly consistent for a warm spell in the second half of August.

My local weather on Sunday was cloudy in the morning, sunny by afternoon and highs reached about 22 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy this morning with patchy light rain or drizzle, slowly clearing skies mid-day, although one or two heavy showers or isolated thunderstorms could develop over north Connacht into west Ulster. Winds increasing to southwest 40-70 km/hr, quite gusty near Atlantic and south coasts. Warm inland by afternoon with highs reaching 22 C, closer to 19 C near coasts.

TONIGHT ... It won't be visible but the new moon sets directly to the left of the setting sun this evening (new moon is at 9:45 p.m. Irish summer time). Becoming cloudy with showers and gusty winds from southwest to west, lows about 10-12 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Much cooler and breezy to windy at times (westerly 40-70 km/hr) with frequent showers, some longer periods of rain possible in north and west giving 10-15 mm, more like 5-10 mm elsewhere. Brief sunny intervals, and the risk of a thunderstorm. Highs 15-18 C.

THURSDAY ... Partly cloudy, a few more showers but becoming more isolated in northwest breezes 30-50 km/hr, cool. Lows 7-10 C and highs 15-18 C.

FRIDAY ... Sunny intervals, becoming quite warm by afternoon, winds increasing to southwest 40-60 km/hr late in the day. Lows 6-9 C and highs from 19 to 21 C.

SATURDAY ... Windy and quite warm, risk of some strong gusts and passing squally showers although some sunny intervals in the mix, as southwest winds reach 50-80 km/hr. Near gale force winds over Donegal Bay and around Galway Bay. Lows near 14 C and highs near 23 C inland, 18-20 C around coasts.

SUNDAY ... Breezy, sunny intervals, a little cooler although pleasant at 20 C in a moderate southwest breeze.

MONDAY ... Squally showers, strong westerly winds developing, temperatures steady near 16 C then dropping slowly.

OUTLOOK ... Turning rather chilly mid-week for about two days, then likely another rebound to warmer temperatures towards end of the second week and into mid-August. For the time being, however, the pattern looks rather autumnal in terms of energy levels although generally rather warm most of the time, just briefly colder at times as in a mild autumn pattern.

Wondering about the weather for the Rio Olympic Games? It is "winter" in Brazil, but as Rio is at a latitude comparable to Havana Cuba in the northern hemisphere, they only see the weakest outer effects of wintry disturbances travelling across South America. The two weeks of the Games looks to be a settled period generally with perhaps one or two brief interruptions from passing showers. Winds will tend to be from the east to southeast much of the time and highs will be 24-27 C with nights around 11-15 C. It should be ideal weather for most of the events.

My local weather on Monday (also a holiday here) was sunny with a high near 23 C. We're expecting showers on Tuesday here. (If you're reading this in North America, the new moon is closest to the Sun at mid to late afternoon depending on time zone, and it would be just below the Sun at that time, not close enough to provide an eclipse ... there will an eclipse of the Sun on the first of September visible from parts of the southern hemisphere around the south Indian Ocean ... that one is "annular" meaning the Moon is too far from the earth at that time to cover all of the Sun so the total phase involves a ring of the Sun around the darkened moon ... we won't see any of that from north of the equator but the "big one" is coming to North America on August 20, 2017. Google it if you want to find out where and when (it's all across the United States from Oregon to the Gulf coast).

    Forecasts for Ireland

Severe heat alert has been issued for SPAIN, PORTUGAL and southern FRANCE between Friday 5th and Monday 8th. Some of that very warm air will enter the weather picture for Ireland and Britain but it won't reach heat wave levels here. Be aware if you have any travel plans that there may be temperatures into the low 40s in the Iberian peninsula and southern half of France, trending to about 35 C in Paris.

TODAY ... Breezy to windy at times, westerly 40-60 km/hr for most but more like 60-80 km/hr in exposed Atlantic coastal regions, with frequent showers or intervals of rain, thundery in places with the risk of hail. About 10-20 mm rain is possible, and highs will be around 18 C except for 20 C in south Leinster and parts of Cork and Waterford.

TONIGHT ... Further showers, but less windy, west to northwest 30-50 km/hr, lows about 10 C.

THURSDAY ... Partly cloudy, passing showers, moderate west to northwest breezes at times, slight risk of thunder. Highs 16-19 C.

FRIDAY ... Sunny intervals, warmer. Low cloud and light rain could brush a few outer coastal areas north of Galway Bay. Lows 6-9 C and highs 18-22 C.

SATURDAY ... Passing showers in the early morning to about mid-day, then partial clearing, some sunny intervals, and becoming very warm especially eastern and central regions. Lows 10-14 C and highs 20-24 C. Strong southwest winds now appear more likely to remain offshore but could be a factor around Achill, Belmullet and Donegal.

SUNDAY ... Sunny intervals, breezy to windy at times (SW 40-60 km/hr and possibly stronger by late in the day in Atlantic coastal regions), warm. Lows 12-15 C and highs 19-23 C. (note the alert, severe heat is likely all weekend over much of France and all of Spain and Portugal -- it will also be rather hot in southern England at about 28 - 30 C).

MONDAY ... Becoming windy with potential severe gusts near west coast, turning sharply cooler, squally showers and possible thunderstorms. Winds becoming westerly 50-80 km/hr. Lows 11-13 C and highs 14-18 C.

OUTLOOK ... Mid-week is looking quite chilly as a northwest to northerly flow develops behind the Monday frontal system. Highs may only reach about 15 in the north, 17 C south by Wednesday. Following that, a slow warming trend can be expected. Some guidance is suggesting that the pattern will become blocked and low pressure will begin to drift west from central Europe, this could lead to showery but rather warm weather in easterly winds. That could eventually transition to warm and dry weather later in August.

My local weather was cloudy with drizzly showers (heavy storms inland), and highs near 18 C on Tuesday. A severe storm event is forming over Alberta and will bring very heavy rainfalls and severe hail to parts of the southern prairies of Canada today and to Manitoba and Minnesota, North Dakota on Thursday. Further east it remains hot and humid until that front arrives late Friday or Saturday leading to a less humid and seasonable weekend.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with some sunny breaks, the most frequent of these in parts of west Munster. Occasional showers, more frequent in the north. Winds west to northwest 40-60 km/hr. Highs will range from 15 C north to 18 C south.

TONIGHT ... Gradual clearing, showers isolated to parts of north, cool for this time of year, lows 5-8 C.

FRIDAY ... Sunny intervals, still a slight risk of showers in parts of the north, westerly breezes about 30-50 km/hr, and highs near 18 C for most, could reach 20 C in the southeast. Friday night becoming partly cloudy with increasing southwest breezes and milder with lows about 10-14 C.

SATURDAY ... Variable cloud with a few passing showers, most likely in Connacht and west Ulster, and turning very warm in afternoon sunny intervals, with moderate south to southwest winds 40-60 km/hr ... (60-90 km/hr near Donegal Bay and west coast of Mayo, Galway). Highs could reach 25 or 26 C in Leinster and parts of the midlands. Highs of 20 to 23 C will be fairly widespread in other regions.

SUNDAY ... Sunny with cloudy intervals, breezy, highs 19-22 C warmest near east coast, winds westerly 40-60 km/hr but could be stronger in some coastal regions.

MONDAY ... Dry to start in east and south, increasing cloud there, while cloud and showers quickly overspread west and north, southwest winds increasing then veering to northwest late in the day. A few gusts to about 80 km/hr possible during this windshift after mostly moderate winds during the day. Highs 16 to 20 C with the warmer readings confined to the southeast.

TUESDAY to THURSDAY will then be quite a bit cooler in northwest winds, with occasional passing showers, otherwise a mixture of cloud and sunshine (or clear skies at night) and highs will generally average 14-17 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... There are optimistic signs that this cool spell will not last and that warmer air will return towards the end of next week.

The heat wave expected across Spain and Portugal is already starting to produce above normal highs (39 C near Madrid on Wednesday) but the core of the heat will develop during the weekend and early next week and Portugal may be hottest in relative terms (could be close to 40 C near Lisbon), although the absolute highest temperatures (43-45 C) will likely be near Seville in southern Spain. Across France temperatures will vary from mid to high 30s in the southwest to high 20s in the north during this period although the north will get into the colder air discussed in the Irish forecast by Tuesday. In Britain, temperatures will be just a little higher than what is predicted here for Ireland, add about 2 degrees on average for southern England, otherwise expect similar temperatures.

My local weather on Wednesday was cloudy with some afternoon sunny breaks, and highs reached about 20 C.

Hurricane Earl (a cat-1 system) has just moved inland over Belize and will quickly lose its tropical intensity for wind although maintaining its heavy rainfalls over Mexico.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy this morning, a few isolated light showers although most places dry, then some sunshine developing by afternoon, in light to moderate westerly breezes. Highs 18-20 C.

TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, mild, southerly breezes increasing to 30-50 km/hr.
    Lows 10-14 C.

SATURDAY ... Variable cloud with longer sunny intervals developing, very warm, gusty south to southwest winds 40-60 km/hr (60-90 km/hr near exposed Atlantic coasts). One or two showers may move across north Connacht and west Ulster but otherwise a dry day. Highs 22-26 C across most of the south and east, 18-22 C west and north.

SUNDAY ... Early morning showers will be brief and sporadic, morning lows about 12 C then afternoon highs 19-23 C as more sunshine is likely with winds veering to west-southwest 40-60 km/hr, increasing to 50-80 km/hr later. Squally showers are expected to develop late afternoon and evening across the northwest.

MONDAY ... Windy and turning colder in stages with occasional strong wind gusts and squally showers, hail and isolated thunder possible. Winds west to northwest 40-60 km/hr with risk of gusts to 80 km/hr in exposed Atlantic coastal regions. Morning lows 11-13 C and afternoon highs 14-17 C.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY ... Breezy, partly cloudy, a few showers and continued cool, lows near 8 C and highs near 17 C.

THURSDAY to SUNDAY ... More frequent sunny intervals and warmer again with highs 19-22 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... There continue to be optimistic signs of this warmer weather continuing for some time, it could turn out to be a fairly good month in general despite the occasional windy and cool interludes.

The heat wave is still on for parts of Spain and Portugal, Lisbon in particular may see unusually high temperatures this weekend. Between there and Seville Spain the highs will probably reach 43 C in places.

My local weather on Thursday here in western Canada was sunny and pleasantly warm, about 23 C. This is expected to continue today.

Earl is back to being a tropical storm inland in the Yucatan region of Mexico and will soon be a tropical depression then a remnant low but it is dropping very heavy rainfalls up to 400 mm or more.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Breezy and warm, with some cloudy intervals especially for northern counties, but also some good spells of sunshine. One or two showers will develop but many places will remain dry. Winds will increase to SSW 40-60 km/hr with 50-80 km/hr over parts of the northwest by late in the day. Highs will vary from 22 to 26 C across most of the south, and 18 to 22 C north.

TONIGHT ... A few brief showers, then clearing towards early morning hours, as winds veer to westerly 40-60 km/hr. Lows 12-16 C.

SUNDAY ... Sunny intervals, becoming windy again by mid-day, and very windy at times in Atlantic coastal counties by afternoon and evening, with westerly winds reaching 60-90 km/hr. Highs about 18 C west, 22 C east.

SUNDAY NIGHT into MONDAY will continue windy and considerably cooler, as winds veer more to northwest 50-70 km/hr. Lows near 10 C and highs of about 15 C north, 19 C south. A few passing showers are likely in the north mostly, but there could be better sunny intervals for the south.

TUESDAY ... Breezy and rather cool, isolated showers. Lows near 9 C and highs near 17 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Sunny intervals, lows near 8 C and highs near 18 C.

THURSDAY to SUNDAY and perhaps beyond, another warm spell will develop, this one may not feature the strong winds of this coming weekend but temperatures could be similar (22-24 C eventually). Thursday will see readings of 20 or 21 C and Friday 21-23 C.

The most intense heat wave conditions for Spain and Portugal are expected over this weekend, with Lisbon to Seville and north towards Madrid all expected to see readings near or above 40 C except for some very weak sea breeze cooling near beachfronts. France will see temperatures near 33 C and England about 27-29 C.

My local weather featured mostly sunny conditions after some marine low cloud burned off mid-morning, and the high was about 24 C. Just had a nice view of the crescent moon near Jupiter. Make a note, on 27th of this month, Venus joins Jupiter in a very close conjunction but to see it, you will need rural dark skies after sunset and a very unobstructed view of the western horizon. The approximate time will be 8:40 p.m. to trade off darkness for altitude, the two planets would be setting before 10 p.m. ... I will post an alert for this again the day before if I think skies are going to be clear enough.

TONIGHT into MONDAY will continue windy and considerably cooler, as winds veer more to northwest 50-70 km/hr.

Sunny intervals, lows near 8 C and highs about 18-20 C.

THURSDAY to SUNDAY and perhaps beyond, another warm spell will develop, this one may not feature the strong winds of this coming weekend but temperatures could be similar (22-24 C eventually). Thursday will see readings of 20 or 21 C and Friday 21-23 C. The latest guidance suggests highs may reach the mid 20s by the following weekend and into the third week of August. Some light rain could brush parts of the far north with weak fronts that make no further progress south before dying out. Only a slight breakdown of this warm spell is indicated even as far into the month as the 23rd (the end of the GFS model run). We should be cautious at this stage, but this warm and dry spell has been on the charts for some time now. The down side if these charts were to verify might be an increasing risk of isolated wildfires.

Meanwhile, that heat wave in Spain and Portugal could hit its peak today with some model forecasts suggesting all-time record highs near Lisbon (44 C) although this would be some distance inland from the city which might stall out near 37 C. If there's any risk of wildfires in northern Portugal there could be a rapid spread of them due to increasing east winds there.

My local weather was fairly average for time of year, partly cloudy and around 23 C. We are entering a two-day showery interlude then more sunshine later in the week.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly cloudy with passing showers, one or two briefly heavy or squally with a risk of thunder. Winds west to northwest 40-60 km/hr but some higher gusts in exposed Atlantic counties. Highs 15-18 C.

TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, still rather breezy, lows 8-10 C.

TUESDAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny intervals, isolated showers, highs 16-19 and moderate northwest breezes, backing more to westerly.

WEDNESDAY ... Partly cloudy, just a few isolated showers, lows 7-10 C and highs 15-19 C.

THURSDAY ... Sunny intervals, cloudy at times near west coast, rain by evening there. Lows 7-9 C and highs 17-20 C.

FRIDAY ... Some outbreaks of light rain in Connacht and Ulster and parts of west Munster, warmer. Lows near 12 C and highs near 21 C.

SATURDAY ... Warm, rather humid. A few morning showers mostly in north, lows near 13 C and highs near 22 C.

OUTLOOK ... Quite warm to about Tuesday 16th, then a more showery pattern for a few days with temperatures closer to normal. Warmth may return at times, as the pattern remains quite warm over Britain and the near continent.

The heat wave in Spain and Portugal has about two days more to go before much cooler air arrives for mid-week. It was rather hot in France on Sunday too and this will continue across the south until late today, but northern France, like Britain, will be turning much cooler today (highs 17-20 C).

My local weather on Sunday was overcast and rather cool, with highs only reaching 18 C.
