Chiefs loseing a 3rd and a 6th for tampering when signing maclin last year

Wow, thats a big punishment. The Chiefs were also fined $250,000. Coach Andy Reid was fined $75,000, and general manager John Dorsey was fined $25,000.

All they did was contact Maclin directly not his agent during the negotiating window and I presume Andy Reid had a personal relationship with him already from his time at Philly.

The Jets were only fined $100,000 last year for their tampering.

NFL random punishment generator strikes again.

    Pity it wasn't the Pats.

Loose all 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks for 5 years and fined.....

The NFL front office is also full of former Jets staff, so that probably helps.

    What an idiot!!!

Like seriously.... Brown, Bell, Bryant, Big Ben.... could have won them a superbowl.... in a dream situation... great players.... URGH this frustrates me and im not even a steelers fan. I know the issue is weed and that is being contested as a non issue, but if its gonna cost you money... its illegal in your profession.... you already got in trouble for it.... COME ON!!!

Super Talented player - freak athlete - just a waste....

Some one is going to take the NFL to court on this front soon. Weed is not a performance enhancer. Its not even illegal in a lot of states now. Eventually this will be removed from the banned list and we will stop getting these ridiculous bans. Because they are ridiculous IMO.

Regardless of its legality or benefits, it's still in the CBA so no court is going to overturn a ban. The union will probably put forward those arguments for the next deal but until then the players are stuck with it I'd say.

To get a ban you have to test positive more than once so continuing to smoke after being caught shows a high level of stupidity.

It's claimed to be a performance enhancer, its banned because its substance abuse.

Agree with both of ye there. Shouldn't be a ban, but nor should you let yourself get to the situation of a ban.

Also don't agree that the Steelers could win a Super Bowl with Bryant and Bell healthy, alongside Brown and Ben. I think they are largely overrated, tbh.

Interesting to see how their defense turns up, and if Bell playing can reduce Big Ben's turnovers, though.

High level of stupidity maybe, high levels of constant pain, almost certainly. They need to change the rule, really.

Yeah it's listed as a performance enhancer for giving a euphoric sensation and being a sedative.

Frankly it's ridiculous. Like I said earlier IMO it will eventually be taken off the banned substance list but maybe not in the near future.

Regardless it's still a ridiculous ban 12 months for smoking weed? Get arrested, batter someone when drunk and you might maybe get 4 games but smoke a joint a couple of times and your gone for a season. ridiculous.

Doesn't make him getting caught doing it any less stupid as he knows it's banned.

He is suspended under the substance abuse policy and not under the performance enhancing drugs policy. I think its fair enough. As a professional athlete you shouldn't be taking recreational drugs. You certainly shouldn't be getting caught multiple times for it.

It goes to show he doesn't care at all about his career. There is no excuse for this whatsoever.

like the fact that he got a 4 game ban last year shows that he just doesnt listen - at that stage he probably tested positive 2 or 3 times and then following the 4 game suspension he does it again! Craziness!

Doesnt he get tested randomly throughout his year suspension to determine if he can be cleared to come back?

Knex. not that i think that they would have won the superbowl but they would have had a good run.... high powered offenses regardless of defense can win games... their defense was awful last year and they still made the playoffs... so having bell, bryant and big ben back healthy for 16 games would have them well placed in the division

Sorry, made a hames of the post myself. Should have stated that I didn't mean you specifically.

More from Reddit, and elsewhere, I saw a lot of folks last year saying how Steelers were genuine Super Bowl contenders when I really didn't see it.

Offense is high powered, but I don't think they were ever beating Broncos or Patriots, for example.

    I'm derailing though, my apologies!

Have the Irish times just replaced the word football with soccer in this entire thing? Does anybody read this stuff?

They even have a picture of soccer in the article at the top. Even before mentioning how more people are casual fans/at least aware some basics of American Football compared to 10-15 years ago thanks to streaming, accessibility, etc, that's... embarrassing. :o

We're just going to have to agree to disagree here.

If you are going to make the professional athlete argument then non of them should be touching alcohol but they do and the repercussions are usually far worse than someone smoking weed.

I haven't read too many articles about an NFL player snapping in a bar or night club because he smoked a joint.

Also with the sport they play I cant say I blame anyone for smoking a joint to help them relax.

PS: that still doesn't excuse his getting caught and the season long ban, that is just him being idiotic

the question is not should weed be allowed or not - the question is that it is currently and at the time of the tests illegal for any professional nfl player to test positive for weed. Bryant regardless of talent was not smart enough to heed warnings and previous suspension!

Also i know his agent came out and says that he suffers with depression and I certainly am not reproaching that - Mental Health is a massive issue at the moment - but in this case he knew what he was facing if he failed again and surely would have explored other avenues for help! I know thats really easy for me to say but still - apparently he has to give back 100K signing bonus and wont get his 500k salary this year - so that will add more stress to him!

My point is that it is a ridiculous thing to be banned for and in time it will come off the banned list.

I am not arguing the stupidity of him being caught , he and the rest of the NFL know that weed is on the banned list and shouldn't be caught doing it but I do think it's a ridiculous thing to be banned for. Like I said this is just my own opinion but the NFL should be looking at it's policies if smoking a joint gets you more banned time than beating your wife.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 950 ✭✭✭nasty_crash

absolutely - when you get more time for smoking a joint than domestic abuse then something needs to change!!

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,627 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

Its not "smoking a joint" though is it? It's having a problem with abusing a drug. Repeatedly. The same goes for alcohol by the way. Players have been banned for abusing that too. He is in stage 3 of the drug program, which means it is not just a once off. He had a 4 game suspension last year.

Its the same in other sports, you cant go around smoking weed all the time and expect there to be no consequences. It would be the same if you are showing up to training or games hungover all the time, eventually you are going to run into problems.

just listened to the fantasy footballers program at lunch and apparently he was tested 6 times last year - and failed them!

I don't recall any player being banned for alcohol abuse?

I agree its stupid that he has got caught repeatedly as you only get tested once a year and after that, you can smoke as much as you like but its only weed. These old rules need to change to reflect modern times, weed is legal/decriminalized in about a dozen states now, not to mention it has no performance enhancing effects.
