I know this is over with and I shouldn't rise to the bait but I had it half written earlier and I'm just gonna post it anyway.

I can categorical tell you that if you were from Kilkenny and grew up here it wouldn't bother you in the slightest.

We play the football now to get it out of the way and clear the decks for the hurling most of our hurlers play football too just not at intercounty level. There's only a few clubs/parishes out of the 40 odd we have, that focus solely on one or the other most clubs play both games.

To be honest it's all a matter of numbers. You compare Kilkenny to Cork Galway and Tipp. All of which have vastly larger populations and playing numbers than Kilkenny. If you look at population sizes compared to AI success which I have by the way, you will see to be competitive in either code be it hurling or football you need at least 150 thousand people in the county. Using 2011 census data you would have a male population of 19 to 34 years olds of 19,500 the vast majority of whom obviously won't be playing GAA but you have a bigger pool to find your lads in. As of 2011 Cork has 67,300, Tipp has 20,600, Galway has 32,570 to pick from while Kilkenny has just 12,400 men in that age range to pick from. To compete properly in both Hurling and football at the highest level and to be an AI contender most years you would need at least a population of approx 300,000 or 39,000 lads in that age bracket. The fact Kilkenny has been so successful at one grade is actually an enormous achievement and to be honest if other small counties were smart they'd focus on one code completely or merge with other counties to have a viable population base to be a consistent contender. I know this will not happen but it's a problem basing the game on the county structure leaves us with.

    Fair enough, thanks.

I wouldn't care if we had a population of four million, there's still no obligation on anyone to play a sport they aren't interested in, no matter how many random people would like to force them too for reasons best known to themselves. Football is ****e, I'd rather have a boil on my arse than play it. So...why should I or anyone else feel obligated to feign an interest?

Unless it's just the thread title that bothers dixiefly? Are there other thread titles on boards he finds similarly misleading? Has he contracted the relevant people about those thread titles? What was the result? Was his life happier once the title was changed?
I was just pointing out within the thread itself - I don't think I said that you or anyone should be interested. Just considering the reality it should be called the Kilkenny hurling thread, no more no less. And no, I don't go around checking out on thread titles, that just struck me yesterday when reading the general GAA list, that's all.

As I said best of luck in your hurling this year :)

Fierce impressed with the quality of hurling in Connacht. Mayo and Sligo have great senior hurling teams.

Kilkenny football is as good as could reasonably be expected.

I think now that I have balanced out the post between hurling and football so as to keep everyone happy.

you could add in several ulster counties too but i think the original post was why not just call the thread the "kilkenny hurling thread" well in truth the cavan monaghan roscommon or mayo threads are all classed as gaa threads despite very little coverage of hurling , the truth is most counties will cover the prefered code some counties ( my own included ) would have an interest in both but the truth is most gaa counties are either one code or the other

    The new Dunmore training grounds

It will be most likely be in dunmore either that or ballyragget but I'd imagine it will be in dunmore. The seniors are only back from holidays so it will be a great chance for some of the u21 lads to stale a claim for the league

Match confirmed for wednesday at 7.30 in dunmore

Who do you think will be rested for league?

It's the u21 panel the team is printed in the kilkenny people with the obvious exception of bennetsbridge contingent.

    DIT 4-14 KK 16pts

    Any reports on game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,747 ✭✭✭brookville

Goals were the killer blows kk started brightly and were bout six up before half time but two goals before the break gave dit a cushion.conor mac and jack guiney both dangerous while up front we were weak with the exception of maybe bolger who chipped in with a few points. Mullins was good at midfield.kk never gave up but the middle seem to open up on several occasions in defence.that finishes our involment in that competition but was great exposure to some of the young lads

There is still the match against Offaly.

Offally already hammered dit so unless we do the opposite they qualify as only one team qualifies it would be great for offally to reach the semis and hopefully go on and win it

Was Bolger playing? Looking at the team I would imagine the U-21 team in the summer will be very different to that team an awful lot of lads are still to come back!!! I think full back and centre back could be a problem though, it'll be interesting to see who play's there in the summer. Will this squad be playing on Sunday again?

O Loughlin Gaels are U21 champs, but had nobody on the team which is odd

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,747 ✭✭✭brookville

Paddy deegan and a few others unavailable, bridge and glenmore lads unavailable players tied to college I'd say there's was at least 6 starters who weren't there last night and yes afaik it's the u21 out again next sunday.i agree 3 and 6 could be a a problem delaney at 3 who is a fine hurler was under pressure while coady wasn't as dominant as I'd hoped granted guiney and conor mac were at 11 and 14

Are there any lads from KK on the college and university teams (DIT, DCU, IT Carlow, UCD and NUI Galway) that are playing in the Walsh Cup?

Chris Bolger is a day overage! Of the starting team last night you would probably say that Brennan, Delaney, Cody and Ciaran Ryan would be the only definite starters for the Westmeath match in 5 months time. I would include Scanlon in that except he's really been struggling for form and with injuries since 2014.

Who are the others? The 3 bridge lads, john walsh, paddy deegan ciaran wallace I'm sure glenmore have one or two alan murphy is such a good freetaker I'd have him there I agree scanlon seemed to have slipped a bit injuries haven't helped

James Maher, Richie Leahy, Darragh Joyce(if he's not gone to Australia), Eoin Kenny, Cathal Mc Grath would be other contenders.

You could probably add in Andrew Gaffney, Huw Lalor and Kevin Blanchfield to that list too!! Of last years minors is Tommy Walsh or Darren Mullen overage this year?

He is in a training camp in the States at the moment but as far as i am aware this is with a view to trying to win a contract for next year, 2017. How that affects his studies in UCD or whether he intends hurling this year i don't know.

Thanks for that. Hard to know if he'll hurl this year then. Maybe they have a pre contract agreement..who knows. It'd be a good experience for the lad so fair play to him. Hope he gets a shot at it.

According to one of the papers the reason he didn't get a chance up to now was there were fears he'd leave due to homesickness. How they arrived at that I don't know. Do they do they psychologically test them or is it just a gut feeling someone had after talking to him. I can understand it from an AFL club point of view if you put all that money into bringing lads out there and after a month or two they come home again like Ciaran Kilkenny and I'm sure others have done.
