Decided to start with a new character today. Really like the feature where you can swap between character saves instead of having them all in the same place.(which i only realized was there today)

I found a tommygun with +50 radiation damage, which given that it is fully automatic should have been an absolute monster, and it seemed to do almost nothing against normal raiders. When I've been hit by gamma guns it doesn't actually do damage damage, it just massively boosts your radiation, so it doesn't act the way normal damage does.

Anyway I threw it out because it was useless.

I just got my hands on a hunting rifle that does extra plasma damage, so I've upgraded it into a .50 cal sniper monster and it's great fun.

Ah! That explains it. Yeah, not much point irradiating them if I 'll be killing them a minute later

That's one of the issues i've had with it so far. There doesn't seem to be any depth to the vast majority of areas. It's just raiders or ghouls in 90% of places i've gone to.

Children of Atom in 3 places I found.

yea just found a few more places and im kinda done now i think **** it. the majority of my play time seems to have been building settlements and most of the missions were fairly generic for the most part a few good one's but nothing that blew my mind, they seemed to have removed any stat based dialog options except for the charm option i had one intelligence option in my main play through which was like 150 hours =/ I found a vault and got all excited was just full of gunners who just attack no role play stuff found a town taken over by super mutants had more terminal story telling, it is kind of taking the piss in this game. Over all i enjoyed it at the time with the rose tinted glasses but when you finish it and compare it to previous one's content wise its fairly weak.

The depth sadly comes from terminals and holotapes (mostly in the past tense). I don't mind lockpicking but the hacking system does my head in so I often skip them, aside from the occasional novice one if it gives companion rep ie. Nick.

Easy Lockingpicking and Easy Hacking mod. Once you have the skill to open those locks, I don't feel you should be made play the minigame - so these mods remove them.

Despite thinking Skyrim was a bit **** (and assuming, by extension, all Bethesda games were) I crumbled on this under the weight of the hype.

I'm about 20 hours in and just got to Diamond City.

The story stuff just seems a bit meh to me. Badly written and acted in a lot of cases. I'm not arsed about Vaultdweller and their missing child really. Thus far I've been give very little reason to care about pursuing it.

But, the busywork that padded out Skyrim is a lot more engaging here.
The combat isn't rubbish - it's actually quite good. VATS feels like a bit of a crutch at times but it's probably the only way I'm beating a Deathclaw in a confined space.

The guns all feel nice and I love the customisation (even if it is pretty much the same thing for most of the weapons - the wackiness in something like Borderlands where guns are totally changed by their modifiers is something I wish more games would do).

There's a pretty decent spread of enemies and while they're nothing to write home about in terms of their behaviour, they force you into using a few different tactics and weapons so it's good enough.

The difficulty is a bit all over the place. You can go from cruising along to getting your head kicked in no time flat. A bunch of Raiders can be dispatched no problem, and then a legendary power-armour wielding boss-dude lurches around the corner and jumps up and down on your face.
It wouldn't be a problem if that pack of enemies hadn't disappeared when you tried to give them another go because of the random generator but there's always more enemies somewhere so it's not a huge deal.

Pretty good all in all, but I'm not sure I can see myself finishing it all the way to the end.

I might well reroll another character at some stage, but it'll be about just exploring stuff on my own steam.
That's not necessarily bad, but after getting so sucked in to the story of the Witcher, it feels somehow vapid to just play this game on a mechanical level, when open-world and engaging story have been proven to not be mutually exclusive.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm going to get to 80 hours played or so and wonder where all the time went, whether I actually enjoyed my time playing the game and whether I would've been better served doing something else.

When they release the modding kit i hope some one takes this game and turns into a exact copy of fallout 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,293 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Still enjoying it but fcuk me the graphics are rough in places, they try to do sweeping vistas like when you're attacking Fort Strong in the vertibird and that kind of thing and it ends up looking like an FPS from 2005, its actually shocking in places, they have to retire this engine now.

Im getting rid of the weight burden its just a joke at this stage, you can barely carry a full loadout of the different weapons needed to fire all the different ammos.

Ambled through a building clearing out all the low level raiders for a quest, quest finished I jumped down into the basement which featured a locked door - and a random legendary deathclaw, which I didn't notice until just after I'd quicksaved. Got lucky though, dropped a couple of bottlecap mines in front of it which happened to cripple one of its legs, then just spent five minutes walking in circles while it slowly limped after me as I gradually finished it off with a pipe pistol. Fun times.

    What mods are everyone using?

Primarily Texture Mods but the list I can think of so far:
    - Wasteland Enhanced Preset (ReShade mod)
    - Lowered Weapons
    - Pipboy Shadows
    - More armor slots
    - Full Dialogue
    - Balanced Power Armor Fusion Core Drain
    - 4k Pipboy retexture mod
    - Water Enhancement Texture mod (W.E.T)
    - Rain texture mod
    - Enhanced Blood Textures
    - Darker Nights
    - Craftable Ammo
    - Enhanced Rock and Ground Texture mods

And a few others. Not going to go mad with script heavy mods on my first playthrough.

I normally play first time without mods but this one, Disable Minuteman Radiant Quests, sure is tempting. I'd prefer something a bit more subtle though because some of them I don't mind like new settlements I haven't been to and so on. At least with the BOS you can avoid getting radiant quests but with good old Preston he'll casually add to your quest list while you are crafting or something which can be very irritating.

That's been my main issue with the game as well.

There was a great synergy to the different crafting/perk/scavenging elements of New Vegas. For example, I found out about Nuka Grenades quite late in Fallout 3 and as a result only ever made a handful. When New Vegas came out I was initially disappointed that the Nuka Grenade recipe depended on a really rare ingredient (Nuka Cola Quartz). Then along came the Nuka Chemist perk so I could turn 3 Nuka Cola into 1 Nuka Cola Quartz. Then in Honest Hearts you got the Home-brewed Nuka Cola recipe which exploded the ability to craft grenades. There doesn't seem to be anything like that kind of synergy in Fallout 4.

The humour also seems to have been surgically removed from the game. There doesn't seem to be the trademark Fallout wit in this game. OK, so you've got Diamond City but it doesn't seem to match the genius naming of Arefu or Novac. There's none of the wackiness of Vault 108 in Fallout 3 or The State of Utobitha in New Vegas. The closest I've seen so far to a funny mission is
The Last Voyage of the USS Constitution although the repetitive fetching and carrying sucked almost all the fun out of it
    .

Then to top it off there's the fact that, as other posters pointed out, nothing you do really matters. And it's not just a symptom of the ending sequence for the main quest, it's the whole way through the game. When I got to Diamond City I had settled in enough to try out the other dialogue options (other than my default nice guy option). So during the conversation with Piper and the Mayor I reloaded to try all the dialogue options and the Mayor's response was still the same. Huh?
Later on I decided to indulge in a bit of XP farming and played some of the radiant Minutemen quests. After about a dozen different quests helping out Abernathy Farm, each time I still go back there Blake Abernathy asks: Are you with the Minutemen? Yes, just like I was the last 10 ****ing times. It almost reminds me of an MMO where you hand your quest in along with the other 50 people doing the same thing.
