Reports that they were having a disagreement (who has the better throwing arm or something!), Geno put his finger in the guy's face and he let loose with the punch.

The offseason was going so well up on till about a month ago. IK has so much potential, he has been getting praised all training camp for his work, he was poised to have a good season! there will be a good number of Jets happy with this news though. Rex Grosman has apparently been contacted................yaaay!

Story behind the punch that broke Geno Smith's jaw in two places:
At the heart of the dispute between former Jets LB IK Enemkpali and quarterback Geno Smith is $600 that Enemkpali believed Smith owed him, per league sources. Enemkpali purchased a plane ticket for Smith to attend his July 11 football camp at Pfugerville High School in Pfugerville, Texas. However, days before the camp, a person close to Smith was killed in a motorcycle accident in Miami and Smith did not attend Enemkpali’s camp, per sources. After Smith did not attend, Enemkpali demanded that the Jets’ quarterback refund him the $600 he allegedly used to purchase a plane ticket. Smith told Enemkpali he would reimburse him the money, but he did not. Enkempali confronted Smith today about the money and the confrontation ended in a punch and broken jaw.

Apparently Geno wasn't sucker punched, he is said to have pointed in IK's face and asked him what he was going to do about it when IK asked him again about the money.

A well deserved broken jaw, IMO.

He probably thought being the QB that he was untouchable. It's well documented that he's an entitled arsehole. If it had been the other way around there's no way on earth that Smith would have been cut either.

You honestly think what Geno said/done(according to Ryan Clark a close friend of IK) justified punching and injuring a teammate to the point of not being able to work for an extended period of time? Also Bowles said that Geno had already turned around at his locker when IK hit him. so yeah that is a sucker punch in my book

If he didn't like the answer, he's shouldn't have asked what he was gonna do about it. That's just acting the bollix in fairness, you act the bollix to an nfl player, you have to expect consequences.

I just find it funny that if you go back through any NFL forum or media outlet everyone seems to preach anti-violence, but I guess only certain scenarios are deemed worthy.

If he was being a d-ckhead about it there were ways IK could have gone about it. There are team captains, coaches, or worst case scenario his agent or lawyer if he really needed the money.

Geno may have antagonised the situation but there is no excuse for throwing a punch
