Great Divide's Belgian style Yeti. Delicious, so sad it's gone. I see Drinkstore still have some, it's well worth a punt imo, especially for anyone in any way inclined towards the imperial stout.

Paid a visit to ATG yesterday

Anderson Valley winter solstice - meh
Bush Noël - lovely caramel taste 12%
My Antonia pils- amaze balls as the kids say, lovely fruity taste
Foam and Fury - Galway lads really going well ATM
Mcgargles red - pretty nice tbh

Popped down to Borough market to pick myself up two Christmas treats.

    Chimay Spéciale Cent Cinquante

    St. Bernardus Abt 12

The Chimay is in the fridge, but I couldn't wait to drink the St. Bernardus. Great beer!

Finally tried the double IPA in ATG last night. It is very nice indeed but you can really sense the increased ABV

Off topic, double IPAs have higher abv & more hops I've been lead to believe. Is this the only difference between "regular" IPA & DIPA? Also how is it done? Simply adding more of the necessary ingredients and/or leaving it longer?

    Sorry for the rookie question!

    Also tried 5 lamps lager.

    Fairly mediocre tbh

Interesting that they had McGargles Red. Was it on tap? I thought the bottles were poor.

I was going to try a Ruination in the Black Sheep the other night, til I asked about the price and also realised I had one on order from Drinkstore.

Picking that order up today, so I might have it tonight.

Spot on, higher ABV means they need to put more fermentables into the mix, so that's more malt.

Then they whack up the hops too, malt brings sweetness, so the brewers put in more bitter hops to counter that.

With more fermentables in the mix, it would need to be left slightly longer too, probably.

All those extra ingredients are why it costs more to buy too.

You could also look at it as just using less water!

The increased alcohol content also adds to the price as, in Ireland, the duty is calculated on the %ABV

Wed 11-Dec: few pints of Bru Dubh, I think made by Bru Brewery (?) in Trim.

Grand beer, big head, wasn't remarkable in any way, but I did re-order. I would buy again, but wouldn't go out of my way to do so. 4 euro per pint.

    Salthouse pub, Galway

GBB Full Sail - I don't really have a sophisticated palate, but I am starting to see what people mean by hoppy beers. I am guessing that this is a "hoppy" beer? I can see that some people mightn't like it at first taste. But it has grown on me. It does not feel or taste like 5.8%, at all. Price is currently 4.55 per pint.

GBB Stormy Port - another nice beer, don't recall much about it now. Price 5.00 per pint

Cask ale - can't remember the name, long title, maybe Jennings?? - anyway, I am a fan of cask ale, I find it goes down very easy.

Wed 18-Dec: Aspall cider - I think I had the Classic Organic version

It seems to me that this cider is quite different to Bulmer's? Would I be correct to say that's it's less sweet.

I think this is a great drink, it seems very real to me, very genuine. It's also quite strong at 7% ABV.

I think I paid 5.00 sterling for three 50cl bottles, so about 2 euro per bottle. Good value.

It would probably be more accurate (and speaking as someone who used to have it as their favourite drink years ago, and still drinks it the odd time) that Bulmers is quite different to any other cider! Some wouldn't call it a cider at all.

It's got so much sugar in it that they produced a (foul) 'diet' version for the calorie-conscious laydees.

I believe they artificially stop the fermentation early so tons of sugar is left. Hmm, what would happen if I put lots of Bulmers into a bucket and threw some yeast in... :pac:

Also, it's some chutzpah to claim 'made from 17 types of apple' as a marketing advantage. Translation: we're so feckin' desperate for apples we'll throw in anything we can get our hands on. Not that I'd imagine the apple variety has much effect on the end product!

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

The Fran Well seem to have their bottled beers available nationally now. I bought a bottled Rebel Red in Cork City Centre last week and a Friar Weisse in a Tesco 's in Mayo this weekend. Both were decent beers, not too far off their draught versions. I've seen here that the bottled beers are contract brewed in the UK, the bottle labels just say 'Brewed in EU'. In fairness though, my main gripe is that they're 330ml bottles, something which for some reason immediately makes me lose interest in buying that beer other than to taste it.

My buddy has reported that they're now in Tesco in Stirling. So unless a case went totally AWOL, I reckon it's safe to say they're available UK wide too.

I was in Drinkstore around 7PM yesterday and saw 7 cases of it beside the door. I asked how much it was only to be told that somebody had bought up all 7 cases ahead of me!

I had to settle for Dark Arts, FW whiskey stout and some O'Hara's Red :o

    Happy christmas all;)

    Got my drinkstore order

Was in Farringtons last night and and a pint of Farami, nice beer but quite heavy. Also had a pint of Kinnegar Yarnaroddy(?), I'd also have to ask, where's the coconut? I could just about taste it because I was looking for it, but I wouldn't have known otherwise, still nice though.

Tonight I had a bottle of Thornbridge Reverend and the Makers Summer Ale, lovely light hoppy ale, it'd definitely make a nice, eh summer drink.

Having a bottle of Long Tongue by Kinnegar now. Quite impressed. Normally the addition of ginger destroys a beer, but they've used it quite subtlety, which seems to make it work.
