Made a trip to Drinkstore earlier. Got the last Black's mini-keg, as well as a little selection for my Dad for Christmas. And some Modus Hoperandi for myself. And a little selection for myself. I felt I needed to reward myself for taking the bus two stops.

Hi guys, don't think this needs a thread of its own. Can anyone recommend 4 or 5 good craft beers. Its my dads birthday tomorrow and I want to get him a few bottles. He doesn't like really high alcohol stuff.

The last of them? Bloody hell, they didn't last long. The place was heaving with them on Wednesday.

Get anything from O'Haras, Sierra Nevada or Dungarvan Brewing. Solid options.
Depends where you live and access to off-licences.
    Where are you based?

Any of the O'Hara's range such as their:

    Stout
    Irish Red Ale
    Irish Pale Ale
    Curim Gold Wheat Beer
Winter Star Spiced Amber Ale - (Ideal for Christmas)

Or some of the other Irish beers such as

    Galway Hooker Irish Pale Ale
    Franciscan Well Rebel Red Ale
    Franciscan Well Friar Weisee
    Trouble Brewing Darks Arts Porter
    Trouble Brewing Deception Golden Ale

All of the above are around 4.3%, except the Weisse which is 4.7% and the Pale Ale which is about 5.2%. They are also easy enough to get in most off-licences.

I thought it was very good but not especially amazing. Perhaps it's because it's an Irish beer broadly in the American DIPA style. Such things are relatively uncommon in these parts, hence the wave of praise. It's great to see local breweries doing new things and, again, in this case, the results were great.

I don't think I've tried an American dipa so didn't have a comparison in mind.
What ones can you get in Dublin?
Glad I got to try it on tap and will definately get some bottles when they come out.
I absolutely agree about the Irish breweries, hopefully we get loads more new brews in 2014. Particularly brown bag as I'm a big fan.

Having a buried at sea milk stout and watching The living daylights on RTE 2, Thank Christ I have my shopping done!
I'm jealous of the selections everyone got in Drinkstore though!

I'm having my first Westvleteren XII tonight. Sharing it with one of my best friends in a while. I'm expecting it to be a spiritual experience of profound proportions.

Leffe Blonde 330ml 6.6% abv currently €5.49 in Lidl for a 4-pack. Superb beer and great value.

A few of the lads up tonight, just got some ruination, some founders stuff, a few cans of modus hoperandi then it's off to mulligans followed by the black sheep followed by farringtons and god knows where after that.

I expect both my wallet and my liver take the worst battering since adolf unleashed blitzkrieg on the hapless poles!

Just back from Drinkstore. Picked up 4 more Modus Hoperandi and a nice wee bottle of Porter House Barrell Aged Celebration.

Going to keep the Celebration for dessert on Wednesday.

Tad disappointed with the stone ruination, bitterness is there but not enough other flavours. Shame because the ipa is smashing imo

Tonight - an 8 Degrees Red Ale. Which wasn't bad, considering I'm not a huge fan of red ale.

Then, into Drinkstore where I picked up a case of Modus Hopperandi, a couple of Stone IPAs, an O'Haras Double IPA and a Kinnegar Limeburner IPA.

Drinking a homebrewed (not by me) red ale now which isn't bad at all.

Having one now. It's like a cross between Goose Island IPA and Sierra Nevada Torpedo.

The mini-kegs were all sold online apparently. They had to check the computer to see if I could take one there and then. From what they told me, there are none left!

Has anyone popped a keg of the Black IPA yet, is it nice?

I hope more Irish breweries start minikegging their beers. Great way to get a decent amount of craft beer home.

Metalman, are you listening... minikegs please.

Modus is great and at €2 very good value. It really reminds me of the 21st Amendment Brew Free or Die IPA I tried over the summer - very smooth, lots of hop with a good malty backbone and not too nasal. Very West Coast, though it's from Colorado, I believe. I should pick some more up, really.
