Carey builds a NUC. Man, that Intel chime...

This guy always cracks me up. Don't get me wrong, he's not incompetent or anything, but he's just so.... amateur-ish...

**** metro and **** the guy that taught it was a good idea to put it on non touch screen devices

yes i know about start8 but i shouldnt have to install something to get it back to the old start menu

I keep losing where **** is on it and only a lot of alt tabing gets me back

also lenovo patch your shovelware so it doesnt require me to update it so i can update the os. you found this problem 6 months ago it should be an issue on newer batches

    /rant

in other news PC world seems to be okay value for money in the uk
i was there yesterday and they had the G710+ for £120 which is the cheapest i've seen it and i got a my new laptop for fairly good value

EDIT also Macro keys are a godsend for windows 8 im saving all my programs to them

It's posts like that ^ that make me eternally glad I got extra copies of Win7 when it came out...

Still, there's always Win8.1. It might be getting closer to Win7 in terms of usability, though generally speaking that's not something you want to be saying about a newer OS, but that's Microsoft for ya.

Pretty awesome value on the 710 though. Didn't realise B&M places were that good over there.

its an okay os i like some of the things and it is quick to boot tbf

but its just metro could have been a lot better implimented on desktops. i like the idea of a common platform on all my devices but cutting the biggest feature of the OS something that has been there for 20 years was crazy.

i get lost in the metro system and im someone who picks up pc programs really quickly i dont want to know how someone less tech savvy is finding it

I will upgrade to blue/8.1/9 if it brings back the start menu

ya B&M stores are okay here i got 2 screw driver kits and TIM cleaner and paste all for £15 in maplin of all places and pc world here keep within a decent price of amazon or below it in some circumstances (the deathadder is £5 cheaper there than amazon, and £30 cheaper for the G710 ).

Oh don't get me wrong; there are lots of things I love about Win8. File transfers, Storage Spaces (at least, in theory), task manager, speed, resource usage, but man, Metro...

Someone on another forum said this when Win8 launched, and in all that time I haven't heard it put better:

"Take all the wonderful new back-end features of Windows 8, and imagine it's a big, juicy steak. What Microsoft is doing with Metro is telling me that if I want that steak, I have to smother it in dog **** first. I don't want a steak that badly."

have you tried stuff like start8/ classic shell and modernmix? I'm sure there are a few other half decent programs that could do away with most of the metro ui.

im goin to give it a week and ill see if i dont put my fist though the screen

i also have to remove some gestures off the laptop as i was watching dreamhack and a hit of the touchpad in an odd way and wound up looking at a weather forecast :pac:

    AirDroid.

My god, it is quite simply, the best app. It basically turns your phone into a Ubuntu-esque browser window. The premium version is accessible over networks other than your own, and you can do pretty much anything. Play music, take photos, transfer files, etc. all in a lovely desktop-type environment. The only thing you can't do at the moment is make/receive calls using a PC mic/speakers, but it's on the most-wanted list, so here's hoping the devs implement it.

Seen it mentioned countless times but never tried it. Must give it a shot.

I really don't understand the problem with Metro.

I mostly just don't notice it.

It's like getting angry at cucumbers or the colour beige.

It's fine for tablets, a desktop ui it is not.

I just don't see any appreciable difference.
I'm never left thinking "Gah! I wish this was W7!".

Except that sometimes End Task in the task manager doesn't work. But I think that's literally the only difference that I've noticed.

In unrelated matters this is quite cool:

Its the mouse movements required compared to win 7

    ignoring kb shortcuts you have:

    bottom left to open metro,
    top right to open search/settings
top left to return to desktop

and to close an ap grab it at the top of the screen and drag to the bottom

in windows 7 they were either in the bottom left or top right of the screen so little mouse movement required

along with the lack of an exit button that travels along as you scroll through metro you casn see its very cleary not built for non touch screen devices

But why would you ignore keyboard shortcuts?

That's like saying it takes me five hours to get to the shop down the road if I don't use my legs.

As for the metro apps, I haven't found one I want to use yet. You can just ignore metro for the most part.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

It depends where you live. They do an afternoon delivery where I am.

Yeah,an An Post van drove down the main road just there, didn't call into my estate, looks like it'll be tomorrow :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Depends on the route. Where I live, the An Post van always passes me in the morning, does the rounds in the Campus, then moves on to the surrounding houses. I usually get deliveries around half eleven.

An post are erratic for us, couriers tend to be afternoon as they come from the airport and we're southside.

Channel 4 +1 is a thing on Sky, it should be on 4oD anyway.

I've never actually had a extremely bad experience with a courier before. UPS and anpost (which is hard to believe since they are semi state :pac:) have really friendly and courteous delivery drivers and they will go out of their way to deliver your parcel, from my prior experiences with them anyway.

I think problems can arise with those franchised couriers you see in the UK. They get paid per delivery and they must want to complete the round as fast as possible
