Get that up to 4.4/4.6 ghz. You should get that at 1.25v, maybe 1.3. You'll see huge gains in Starcraft.

Get your 7950 to 1100mhz too.

Would you really need to overclock a 3570k for starcraft 2? Any reviews I've seen, i5's are nearly hitting 100fps at high settings at 1080p with a decent card....

7770 is equivalent to 7970 in SC2. It's heavily CPU bound.

No CPU can maintain above 45 FPS in late game 1v1. The benchmarks are utter **** for this game. Single threaded performance is what matters for SC2.

Interesting. Never actually played Starcraft myself. How would you recommend it to someone who plays a lot of Dawn of War/Company of Heroes but otherwise no RTS?

Well I love it. I take 1v1 pretty seriously, I'm very competitive :P The scene is huge too, hundred thousand dollar tournaments several times per year. I played DoW and CoH when I was younger but not online.

No harm to try it out, I suppose :)

Just to clarify with regard to the FPS, I am referring to a maximally OCed i7/i5, even then, they can only maintain above 40 FPS when all the physics setting are turned on.

Have an AM3+ Motherboard and currently a Black Edition 965 @ 3.4ghz. FX 8350, yay or nay?

As the owner of a 965 BE @3.9GHz I'd say nay. Overclock that sucker and wait for Steamroller :pac:.

Unless you have a graphic card that is north of a well overclocked 7950 its going to be a bottleneck in hardly any games, with the exception of a few of the most CPU bound games (Like Starcraft 2 above :))

    I've already overclocked it.

Overheating at anything over about 1000 core at 1100mV I think.

It was the cheapest HD7950 I could find. I might've been better getting a 7870 and then another later. Ah well. It's done everything I've asked of it **ruffles graphics card's hair**.

What was your stock voltage? My card gets hot at 1.1v, but it can manage over 1200mhz at that voltage. Your 3570k at 4.4+ghz is awesome for SC2 :P

OK how about a new gfx card . Currently have a xfx 6870 . Any recommendations?

    Stock was something like 980mV.
It wasn't stable at that trying for much more than 950mHz.

I'm getting 28-30 fps at 1440p for Crysis 3 (with AA turned off).

I don't even bother with the overclock for other, older games. The fan is loud as **** when it's under full load. I do have good headphones but I try to avoid wearing them when I can because they kinda hurt my ears and jaws.

    Supposed 4770K benchmarks, vs. 3770K

    http://wccftech.com/intel-haswell-core-i7-4770k-core-i73770k-benchmarks-leaked-memory-clocked-3000-mhz/#ixzz2RUioIgOB

Average 5-10% improvement, nothing on temperatures unfortunately.

my patience wasnt goin to hold until the end of june anyway :pac:

Is it my imagination or have SSDs come down about 20% in the last month?

A 500GB one might be seriously testing my willpower in about 6 months time...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

You're not wrong. I'm hoping though that with Micron releasing the M500, Samsung will chuck out a 1TB 840 that's cheaper.

Honestly, I'm very impressed with how fast SSDs have grown. I didn't think at this time last year that we'd see 1TB drives this soon.

I'm overclocking my 3570k on my new board, Gigabyte Z77x-d3h.

On the z77 pro3, I had the option of setting an offset voltage. In the Gigabyte board, I can just set the voltage manually (supposedly better). My problem is, I can't find the option to activate Intel's dynamic clocking thingy (copyright Gumbi :P). So even as I'm messing around in the BIOS, my fan is working hard to keep my CPU cool (I'm working on a crude OC of 4.6ghz at 1.3v).

How do I work around this? Do I just overclock by using turbo boost and setting it so that all cores boost to 4.6ghz?

I do have a dynamic voltage option, but it only allows me +/- 0.6v, so that's not much use @ 1.3v. I was expecting it to down lock automatically to 1.6ghz at ~1v like my old motherboard would do.

Thanks! Sorry if I'm being stupid, it's been a long day for me :/ So much work to be done :(

You'd wanna look for C1E or Speedstep, lemme boot into my BIOS and see what its called since I have a GB board too.

Sound. Yeah speedstep is what it was called on my AsRock. I there's a CIE on in my BIOS, I'll check.

    Thanks!

Its in the frequency menu on the M.I.T tab, in Advance CPU Features

Heh. I think I had to "cycle" through a high load low load to "activate it. Maybe I'm talking total BS, but it was 4.6 ghz while I set up Prime, CoreTemp etc. I started 4 workers, fans ramped up, stopped testing 30 sec later frequency dropped to 1.6ghz. Think I'm good now.

Still, I'm not 100% convinced. My CM's fan is spinning above minimal speed (I think). Core Voltage is 1.26 v according to CPUZ, VID is 0.9106 v according to CoreTemp. It seems all is well. But my fans are not at minimal speed.

Idles temp are around 25 degrees so my fan should be taking a break!

    PWM Fan ?

    0.75, minimal amount.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

On my ASRock board I'm using the "Additional turbo voltage" setting. Essentially, I have it so that instead of all four cores turboing to 3.4 (or whatever the stock speed is) they turbo to 4.6, and I set a corresponding voltage (an offset) to match. Maybe the Gigabyte board can do something similar?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,698 ✭✭✭Gumbi

It just seems like my fan is working too hard when my CPU is doing nothing. It's not maxed, but it's not at lowest speed either, I'm sure of that.

It ramps up when I simply open SC2 and am in the menu screen.

Whats the difference in RPM between the speed your getting now and the rated minimum speed on the fan ?

Ok, I'm in the BIOS now, my fan is spinning at 1200RPM, not silent at all. I think minimum is 600.

Odd, should probably go down to about 750 ish. Temps are okay I presume ?

34 degrees according to BIOS. Tbh, that's not great is it? I know it's perfectly safe, but I would expect 25ish out of my Hyper 212+ in the BIOS (I'm pretty sure I had this on my z77 pro3)

Fan gets really loud and temps jump as you'd expect. Stay at 55ish initially.

I would expect idles temps at 25 tbh with the Hyper 212 (1.25v), I'm pretty sure that's what I had with my AsRock.
