News reckon its terrorists but bomb was not designedvto maximise death or injury toll

I assume if its a reasonably large terrorist organisation that they will claim the attack? If its just two guys with a grudge it will become obvious in a few days I'm sure.

    How does that work?
    This.

If it was designed for low lethality, there are flashbangs for that. You don't design a low lethality bomb with ball bearings.

How can you assume how people should react in such a situation? It's all well and good saying people should jump straight in and move hoarding but there is such a thing as shock you know.

I would be amazed if this was a gas/electrical explosion. To happen on this day, right on the finish line? Far too unlikely.

As for Al Queda etc, I would imagine they would go for something bigger. This sounds like an amateur job, someone with a grudge etc.

News channels are saying the area gets swept for bombs beforehand so its odd that this has happened, unless someone brought in a backpack full of explosives or something. Even if this hasn't been carried out by a terrorist group it will have the same effect

My initial thoughts would be home grown Islamic extremists under the influence of a radical clerics online preaching. Al Qaeda will claim responsibility soon enough if it does turn out to be a home grown Islamic extremists. AQ are more an ideology now than a group.

Doubt it was a backpack. More than likely a thin suicide vest and possibly dressed as a runner in the marathon to avoid detection before the attack.

Of 19 admitted to hospital nearby, no new deaths. 5 Critical.

These "unconfirmed reports" of fatalities really annoy me.

FFS, it's the last thing they should be reporting on right now. If there are any deaths, these people have families and it just increases fear and panic amongst those with family members at the race.

Would it be so hard to wait for confirmed reports from an official source after family members have been informed? It keeps the panic levels lower for the public. Wait until they have been informed and for a Police official to make a statement.

Reporting deaths based on unconfirmed reports, and speculating over deaths so quickly serves no purpose.

News agencies have an obligation to report the news, they have no obligation to try beat every other rival news channel to the story.

Am I the only one who thinks that's a bad idea, broadcasting the movements and plans of emergency personnel?

Does that not kind of defeat the purpose of planting a bomb though? Why would someone plant a bomb that's designed to kill a low number of people?
