    It's Disney's idea in fairness.

Well **** me. I didn't think it would be possible for me to have any interest in Star Wars as a property, but this announcement has actually got me cautiously optimistic. Star Wars biggest problem has been Lucas since before the prequels. It'll be interesting to see what Disney will do now that it's been rescued from it's abusive, creatively bankrupt father.

Only attack of the clones is worse then it.

Would that not mean you think that the phantom menace was the best of the prequels?

Personally I'm happy with all this as Disney did well with Marvel so far, also I'm with the others and can't wait for the next Kingdom Hearts game.

Episode VII: Return of the revenge of the attack of the phantom new hope strikes back.

They also need to retcon out that whole Chewbacca dying stuff.

Assuming disney bins Lucas's treatments for films 7 8 9 for being awful how do we see this being played out , do they get a visionary Director in with his own idea's for a trilogy ala Nolan or do they go down the Bond route and make a series of loosely linked Standalone films with whatever director is willing to not shake the boat too much .

Huh? It was ruined as soon as the first ewok showed up in ROTJ. Anyway there is only one really good SW film and that's Empire, the rest are average (A New Hope) to pure shyte (AOTC).

George Lucas ruined it himself in 1999. Have you seen the prequels? they're terrible, terrible films. Lucas is a good ideas man, but an appalling screenwriter and has been surrounded by yes men for too long, treating a near 40 year old film as a still work in progress.

a piece of sh*t is still a piece of sh*t

but if I was to break down the pros and cons of all 3 films, then yes phantom menace has the least wrong with it and attack of the clones has the most problems.

ive got a bad feeling about this...

I'm struggling to understand how anyone could feel optimistic about this. Here's a fairly representative selection of big theatrical live action movies (in genres similar to Star Wars) Disney has made in the past ten years: Pirates trilogy; National Treasure; Around the World in 80 Days; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Alice In Wonderland; Prince of Persia; The Sorcerer's Apprentice; Tron: Legacy; John Carter. Mediocre stuff at best, with some total stinkers in there. The Avengers sticks out like a sore thumb on any list of their films (can't stand Whedon's work myself, but I accept many people liked that one a lot.)

On the evidence of Disney's track record, IMO the best we can expect for Episode VII would be some bland Narnia-type deal. And it could get every bit as bad as the prequels.

Indy is fairly worthless to Disney as Paramount owns the sequel rights. The only reason George owns the Star Wars ones is because Fox gave them to him in '76 thinking that they weren't worth anything (a costly error). I assume Disney will still have to deal with Fox if they want to re-release the original trilogy, although I can't see them doing that while Lucas is alive.

I'd be thrilled about this if it wasn't for one word: Disney. I don't think the tone of what Star Wars is is compatible with the kind of movies Disney puts out imo.

What you'll get (it's almost guaranteed even this far out) will be a blend of The Clone Wars series crossed with John Carter. Upliftingly entertaining, and certainly better than anything Lucas could put out but light years short of what the franchise is capable of - a bit too bland and a bit too safe. You can quote me in a few years if I'm wrong.

Always hoped it would go to a company more along the lines of Lionsgate.

This is undoubtedly good news for the franchise but it just feels like being one number off the jackpot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 469 ✭✭666irishguy

I think Disney may surprise everybody, Star Wars is not a blood soaked franchise in terms of on screen violence and gore, so they should manage to keep the tone of the originals without making them uber family friendly. At least the franchise will have serious money behind it and like several posters have already stated, there will be a large pool of talented writers who are fans themselves chomping at the bit to make no.7. I have always felt that what killed the prequels was the fact that the whole thing seemed to have the feeling of being shot on a sound-stage or in blue screen, you never managed to suspend your belief. If the prequels had the same level of CGI tech as say Avatar, they would have been much better realised. Watching them now, they have badly aged even in the last decade.

Now I'm wondering how this will affect the Clone Wars series? Will it finish up or just move to the Disney channel?

I'd wager they'll just see out the season where it is and then cancel it. Tho that said I have a vague memory they were only aiming for 5 seasons from the get-go anyway.

Whilst I'm not against the idea completely, I really hope it isn't a similar story to the other 6. Would prefer them either going back to The Old Republic times, or even something completely different, set a few 100 years after Episode 6.

Personally, I'd love to see a film about Revan's journey after the end of KOTOR.
The journey into unknown space for the True Sith

I think that would be pretty cool

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Yep, just ask Bioware for a script. Problem solved!

Seriously though, I'm happy to hear it, they have built up goodwill with the excellent Avengers film, and really looking forward to a new Star Wars film.

It'd be cool if they let a different director make one Star Wars film each; say Whedon, Cameron and Nolan. Or have Peter Jackson in there. In any case, New proper Star Wars film is better than no Star Wars film.

Why would Kevin Smith ask? He's semi-retired from film making. Only 1 real dud in his repertoire too from my standpoint and his problems with the lead in that movie probably affected it a lot.

TBH, it's far too early to call whether this is good or bad news - certainly given that none of the creative talent or specifics have been announced yet. Disney have been known to make a good film or two occasionally. Emphasis on the occasionally.

That said, it's telling how low this franchise has sunk when the instant reaction to the vague announcement of a sequel is violent, irrational rage.

TBH I think the overall reaction to this news among fans has been mostly positive. People want more Star Wars movies. They just don't want more Star Wars movies written and directed by George Lucas.

The 'childhood is ruined' comments are hilarious really, and I can only hope said in jest. Not sure how being acquired by a company famous for making child-friendly movies is the ruination of anyones childhood, and you'd think they were ruined enough by Lucas' set of prequels. Maybe people just blotted them out, I know I try to.

Hey people, guess what? The original trilogy still exist, this decision doesn't change anything, least of all the past. It actually lessens the chance of further tinkering of the films by Mr. Lucas so if anything, your childhood has just been saved. Bit of perspective is needed here.

You know, I always thought the plotlines and story of the gaming series " Knights of the old republic" to be far superior to the films if I'm honest. It kinda had that Terminator thing to it with me.

"So here is a film which is pretty good, but I'm going to give you a hint of what happens elsewhere, and it sounds 1000 times more awesome".

Seeing the Sith and Jedi going toe to toe, when they were in full battle is something to behold. I just might be able to see it on screen in my lifetime....

I definitely don't need another small possy saving the galaxy, I want fully fledged lightsabre battles dammit!

    In fairness, Disney aren't idiots.
They know people nerdgasm for the originals. They know nerds shook their heads at Lucas in general.

If anybody was going to take over and give it a whirl, it may as well be the people that make certain that stuff is to a certain level of excellence.

There's a decent chance that they will bring in proper writers, lovers of franchise and will work properly on this, since they have a few years to make what will hopefully be a great Star Wars - I'm an optomist dammit!

Though, it will be strange seeing a castle light up, instead of glittering green Lucas! Glittering Green Castle with Lucas name underneath??

as a massive star wars fan (rebel alliance tattoo and all :D )I'm actually kinda excited by this.

Disney have proven with their Marvel take over that they can deliver (The Avengers proof positive of this), and the thought of a Star Wars movie 1)That isn't directed by George Lucas 2) That isn't written by George Lucas 3) That's entrusted into the hands of a competent film maker and 4) Isn't shot entirely on greenscreen is an exciting prospect.

I do have a few concerns - ideally I'd like 7,8 and 9 to be a new story with no connection to the first 6 - I'd be terrified they'd recast the original trilogy actors and pick up just after Return of the Jedi with the "Continuing Adventures of Han, Leia and Luke". Although if they went down that route I'd love to see them tackle the Thrawn Trilogy, but that won't happen.

That and the comments from Disney that after the next trilogy there'll be another movie "every two years". Expect lots of low rate CG movies based on Yoda then.

However, the news has excited me (imagine Pixar tackling a Star Wars story!). Can't wait to see how it all pans out.

This is a terrible deal when you consider Jobs sold Pixar (which Lucas sold to him for pittance) to Disney for 7 billion six years ago. But then Lucas was never the great businessman that he was made out to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,298 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

They either go with stories from the Expanded Uniuverse of which there are plenty and recast all the main characters.
Or they say **** the canon and make up their own **** and still recast(btw the internet will explode if this happens)
Or they come up with new characters and stories and work around all the main events already set in stone.

Im on the fence between options 1 and 3, new chcracters and stuff would be awesome but id love to see some of the great storylines already out there made, even if it does mean recasting which in some cases it wouldnt, the xwing books for example would make for awesome movies and have very few original characters that need to be recast

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

Best case scenario: We get a load of new films, a few tv shows, possibly the live-action tv show that was rumoured years ago, more merchandise, more games etc.

Worst case scenario: We get a load of new films, a few tv shows, possibly the live-action tv show that was rumoured years ago, more merchandise, more games etc.

Either way, we get more Star Wars, and the originals are still there. Nobody's childhood has been destroyed and there's plenty of other things out there if you want. If you're a Star Wars fan, then you can't actually lose (unless, as said above, Kevin Smith is allowed to write/direct. But that's a given).

I'm curious as to what the films will be about. They could possibly have different sets of films based around the Old Republic universe and also after the original films. Kind of like the Marvel films, lots of individual character arcs and a few cross-overs. But I guess what we all want most is to learn more about Jar-Jar Binks. It's a story that must be told!

I would break my balls laughing if the first Disney Star Wars film opened up with a big song & dance number.
