I see that Carphone Warehouse have the S III on '3' pre-pay for €569, presume this would some '3' branding on it? Wouldn't bother me if it was locked to '3' as I'm already on one of their sim-only plans but don't want to be waiting for updates (probably inevitable on a new device like this).

It would be 3 locked and have 3 bloatware on it, fine if your a rooter and ROM'er but if not i would consider saving the few bob and buying simfree.

It would be madness to spend that amount on a locked rebranded phone

How so? I had an S1 on three and it only had the bloated three Rom on it for about 5% of the time till I flashed custom roms. Never any issues.

You still had the 3 radio software installed. A non-3 phone won't. Without the special radio software you will likely experience the 2g/3g switching problem that causes a lot of rage.

Wow never heard of that, though my brother has his 3 GS2 rooted and a custom ROM and of course radio on and its never caused any issues.

Personally hate three as a company, they were fantastic when they launched first but now they are spammy, unhelpful and apparently very mean with their contracts at the moment.

Also their carry on with moving from them to another network is disgraceful. Then there is their call centre who EVERYONE dreads having to speak to... a long way from their formerly brilliant scottish call centre.

I highly doubt Three have their own radio code on ROM.

I have my SGS2 rooted with DarkyHD. I see my phone switch from 3G to R every now and then. It also swaps back to 3G a few minutes after I enter a covered area.

Doubt all you want, they do! This is why they take ages to release updates, it's nothing to do with the bloatware - that can be trivially added on.

None of the non-3 phones I had ever worked properly on their network, and I am certainly not alone.

Fair enough, I can only speak for my experiences. I have no problems on DarkyHD

Three do have custom radios and they are extracted and uploaded online(XDA) to be honest though, the best radio for a device is normally the best radio and the devs online will tell you which one gives decent performance and battery life and custom ones by networks are generally the same with minor tweaks for their network.

That being said, it's piss easy to flash a radio, rom or kernel so there really no worries here. I have never had an Android device that I didn't have a custom rom or kernel.

I'm with 3 payg since September (as their offer was too good to refuse. I do have signal issues on fairness, like not getting 3g coverage while neighbour next door has full coverage also on 3.
I get this "R" signal over my signal bar and don't know what it means.

I've the S3 rooted with litening rom.

The "R" means that your phone has switched over to Vodafone 2G service for voice and texts. You won't get data.

That "R" will change to "3G" or "H" to denote that you are back in data coverage.

You can confirm this by pulling down the notification bar. It will say that the network is Vodafone rather than 3.

I believe that is just their official launch. Not sure it has anything to do with the availability on networks and and sim free with other places.

The latest we've heard is that the white will be in store on Friday. You can buy this online/over the phone on Wednesday and it should be shipped on thursday. We are still waiting to hear from Samsung on a revised date for the blue.

I got my current phone (HTC Desire) from Meteor two years ago & it was unbranded & unlocked, will be interested to hear if the S3 is similar.

The S2 was unlocked also, it did have some crap app's on but no big deal, especially not if you're a rooter.

It's finally time to get with the times and upgrade from my basic Galaxy Ace. I must say I prefer the look of the Nexus to the SIII.
How would the Nexus stand up to the SIII?

Well Nexus is a generation behind I suppose, not a bad phone by any means but not a highly spec'ed as the GS3.

A generation behind is a bit unfair, as regards the processor and gpu (On a par with the S2), maybe, but the screen being HD super AMOLED and the fact it runs ICS means it isnt all that far off, couple of disadvatages would be the camera being inferior and no microSD slot. In its defense, it probably will get the next android version practically straight away, and it is quite reasonably priced, being less than the S2 it would seem. I'd get the s2 though, if I'm honest, or the S3 with a few hundred euros extra to spare..

Oh, and by the way, I was in London at the weekend and was surprised to come across a Samsung store in Stratford (Near the Olympic village). they had the s3 and I was pretty impressed, looks/feels way nicer in reality than in the pics, and the screen is beautiful. 20 minutes later I was at the apple store at the same shopping centre, playing with a 4S(I had to go on the net was my reason for being in there :)), hard to believe they are supposed to be up against each other..

The S3's are in 3 stores this morning for anyone that pre-orderd, could be a few spare for new customers or upgrades if anyone is quick enough.
