I just love that boomerang style rear wing. Funky! :D

I also see the car was piloted by Michele Alboreto, last driver to win in a Tyrrell.

Front wing? Looks pretty straightforward to me.
When I see things like that I wonder if I know the reason something doesn't work well or if I'm giving myself way too much credit. :pac:

I was talking to a work mate of mine who said one of his old Red Bull mentors used to drive that car. He said the front wing didnt last too long in test. I think its a really nice car to look at, very modern

It's a shame Tyrrell never raced with that wing. I see that there is some mesh type cover over the engine. Will let the air into the DFV and not allow anything to get into the trumpets.

I won't be following F1 in 2012. I might catch some highlights but I won't be going out of my way to watch it.

I've been watching F1 for 20+ years now and have come close to giving up on it several times but after yet another season where the championship was more or less decided before halfway, where the number of drivers to reach the podium could be counted on one hand, and where team orders are still allowed determine results, I'm giving up.

I've been enjoying the bikes far more than the F1 for the last few years and have always prioritised the F1 - not any more. In MotoGP/SB you can have the lead change 5 times - on the last lap!!, races decided by .005 of a second!!, championships won by a single point... plus there's an Irish interest with the likes of Laverty and Rae.

I used to watch ALL the F1 races over the years. Race day used to be something special and I would never miss a race - my life was worked around the F1 race week-ends. However, with so many races on the calender these days, a race week-end has become much less a special time and I don't mind if I miss a few.

Incidentally, I have never been to see a F1 Grand Prix and at the prices these days, I never will go - not on my pension. Thanks Mr. B. E.

However, I have been to a Motorcycle GP, in Germany - about 1986. I didn't find it anything really special. Definitely prefer to watch it on TV.

Thats quite a common mod, although not as fancy as the duct tape mod I have used in the past :pac: Its got great lines the Tyrrell the rear wing looks like its off the new Lamborghini supercar.

I've seen that wire mesh was also used by some teams using the DFV/DFY/DFZ engines.

The late 70's early 80's was an interesting tme in the sport. Lotus coming up with ground effect, Williams taking it a step further with moveable side skirts. The Brabham fan car which won the Swedish GP on it's one and only outing. Tyrrells boomerang wing.

I do like reading about those times in the sport.

Is there any pictures of the Brabham (I think) when the fan on the end of it?

    And here's another:

    page__module__images__section__img_ctrl__img__66660__file__med

When the car wasn't racing, the fan was concealed with a dustbin lid. You can also see the exhausts for the Alfa Romeo flat 12 power plant.

The fan did the job by sucking the air out from underneath the car to give it enormous grip.

Apart from the shocking performance increase what really pissed off the drivers was apparently following it was a nightmare. Apparently it would suck up all the debris and fire it out the back of the car onto the following driver.

Yup, the BT46 attracted Mario Andretti's wrath. Was very difficult to drive aswell.
Not a nice situation to be in for 30/40 laps and having been hit in the head by an exhaust at over 100mph I can agree!

    That Tyrrell looks awesome!

The sidepods on that Tyrrell reminded me of this beast, the Brabham BMW BT52. Had a turbocharged inline 4 cylinder motor. BMW and Hart were the only teams to use 4 cylinder motors. Mixed fuel also made the BMW engine more powerful.

I just love that wedged shaped front wing.

The cars back then sure did look interesting!

It sure is. Made a one off apperance before it was killed off.

One-off appearance (that many teams tried) at the Monaco Grand Prix (can't remember the exact year... 2001?). FIA banned it because it (the supports mainly) obstructed the driver's view of the road.

I still prefer the Honda Dumbo ears though.

The extra wings on the Arrows and the Jordan appeared at first practice at Monaco in 2001. They managed to do some laps and they were banned. They were the only teams that turned up with mods like that.

Just found this clip about them on Youtube by doing a search on Google:

    Not soon enough :(

Had my annual withdrawal symptoms over Christmas. Even got to the stage where I downloaded several full races and watched them over and over. Canada and its 5 hours was as epic as when I first watched it :D

Even though I'd seen it four or five times before it (yes I have a lot of time on my hands :pac:) I still get the same reaction when he goes past Vettel. Drive of the last two years at least. Better than his championship winning year. His driving this year would've won him the title if it hadn't been for Seb.

Never really been the biggest Button fan but was cheering him on last season, and will be for next.

Yeah. Schumi would've made the podium if it hadn't been for that. Although I think the drying weather played a part in him getting overtaken too...

James Allen has joined bbc radio 5 live as lead f1 commentator for 2012. Might hav to rethink the radio 5 + rtl option or just listen to the german commentary.

Aaron, I agree with what you say about Button. He has been a revelation last season.

Just think of it, he could have been without a drive in 2009 had Brawn not bought the Honda F1 operation.

Not only without a drive for that year but also could have potentially been another lost F1 talent, as who knows whether McLaren would have grabbed him for 2010 if it hadn't been for Brawn 2009.

I think myself that if Button didn't get a drive in 2009, he was finished in F1.

It was a season of contrasting fortunes for Button in 2009. Could have been without a drive for the 2009, then getting a drive and going on to achieve the title and ending up in McLaren.

Like button too. Pretty straight up sort Id say or else a PR genius.
Really hope he can have a few good early results. Hamilton wont be able to handle it for another season.

If Button has a good start to the season and finishes ahead of Hamilton in the races, I can see Hamilton going into meltdown.

    Terrible luck for him

Apparently he reopened the fracture in his right tibia which he broke in his rally crash last year. Could delay his recovery by three weeks.

Terrible news for Robert, I wouldnt be willing to completely rule out a return from this. Its clearly a major setback but the progress that Kubica made in the second half of 2011 was pretty impressive according to some people in the paddock so hopefully he can get over this and recupperate over the spring.

I think once he has fully recovered from his injuries, some team might give him a test to see how he performs.

If the nerves in his hands have healed properly then I see no reason why a team wouldn't give him a chance. He has the talent and clearly the heart and determination, will his body allow him to do it though?

And there is also the mental issue imo. I think once a driver is in a serious accident, their speed is blunted and I don't think they can push their cars to the limit anymore.

This is a good point. Look at Massa after his incident, hasn't been the driver he once was.

Its a pity but I don't think he'll make it back to F1, surely not having one of your arms at 100% would be a massive hindrance...

Same happened with Alessandro Nannini in 1990 when he had his right forearm was severed. It did heal, but it wasn't the same. He ended up in touring cars and GT where he had success.

If Kubica does return to motor racing, he might end up in touring cars or GT racing or something along those lines.

That said modern F1 cars have power steering and have paddleshift. If you really really wanted to you could accomidate a driver with one arm. That said it could make things tricky like if you needed to get out of the car in a hurry.

Give him an ejector seat :D

I drove karts with a badly sprained wrist for 6 weeks many a moon ago. I do realise of course having a near severed arm is worse, but it was still ok to drive. A bit painful afterwards as the adrenaline stops flowing and the muscles start to twinge but it was fine.

Does anyone think he could make an appearance in the latter half of the season depending on his fitness of course. Perhaps he might get a chance at Lotus if Grosjean fails to deliver this year.

He'll more than likely be given opportunities to test for the team. And as you say, if Grosjean isn't driving well and if Kubica is fit enough to drive, then I'd see him going straight in.

Kimi and Kubica... some team there

At a minimum he should at least be testing before the end of the year. If he doesn't he could be forgotten about as teams might not be interested in him anymore.

Interesting story involving Sutil and a Renault executive:
    BBC wrote:
F1 driver Sutil to stand trial over nightclub fracas

Former Force India driver Adrian Sutil is to stand trial in Germany over an incident in China which left the owner of another Formula One team injured.

The German driver is charged with causing grievous bodily harm in the incident involving Renault F1 executive Eric Lux, who suffered cuts.

Mr Sutil has issued an apology over the incident, which happened in a Shanghai nighclub last April.

Prosecutors are requesting a year's suspended sentence for Mr Sutil.

Munich court spokeswoman Ingrid Kaps said two trial days had been set - 30 and 31 January.

Both Mr Lux and Mr Sutil were among guests at a party to celebrate Lewis Hamilton's victory at the China Grand Prix in Shanghai last April.

Mr Sutil's manager told reporters that the driver was looking forward to seeing the truth of the incident come out in court.

The Renault team has since been renamed Lotus. Force India have already announced Germany's Nico Hulkenberg as Mr Sutil's replacement.
