your router (assuming it's separate to your modem) may be fine, but your modem won't be as the 50 & 100mbps packages are both using euroDOCSIS3.0 which is not compatible with existing UPC supplied modems.

as an existing UPC customer you'll either have a scientific atlanta epc2203 standalone modem and your own router, or the cisco epc2425 modem/router and neither do euroDOCSIS3.0, only v2.0

i *think* someone mentioned before that v3.0 may be backwards compatible, but you are unlikely to get any extra speed until you have the new (thompson branded) modem/router plugged in when it arrives.

They have said I am not receiving a new modem, its just a new wireless router, and my package will be upgraded straight away

So I'll receive a new router in the coming days, but if I reboot my kit later today I should be already upgraded.

So unless she is mixed up, the modem I have that was supplied can take the 50mb, cause I specifically asked was the modem being changed and she said just the wireless router, your modem is good up to 100mb.

Which was also confirmed by an engineer that was in the house in November fixing the TV, who said to me to speedtest for the laugh, I got 90mb dl and he said the cap switch was off down at the exchange as they were working on upgrades. Thats where I first heard of the new 100mb package.

And that wasnt inflated speedtest.net, I was getting seriously good download speeds for about 2 days while the cap switch was off.

But sure I'll see what happens when the courier comes, but she was very stressful on just being a new router.

Service was quality btw and it was all sorted in a few minutes and very informative.

So might it be the case that the router I'm reciving is basically just one big box of win.

    At the moment I go

Wall -> Modem -> wireless router and everything cabled to this

So maybes its now going to be

Wall -> router/modem box of win -> cabled to everything

    ?

    Can someone just confirm this

    Currently on 30Mb package only,

I can ask them for an upgrade to 100Mb with a Phone for €57 a month
And i'll have to pay €40 for installation is that correct?

Cordless house phone is €15 extra i'll go for that too - as the modem is under the TV and that would be annoying

    It is €20 installation.
I was quoted that this morning.
They quoted me €23 extra per month for the 100mb package.

I'm currently on the top TV package, phone and 30mb.

I pay bout €160 a month so she said they would taper it at €180 monthly. That option will be available to me as an imediate upgrade even through my new 12 month contract at 50mb.

Basically I just asked whats the price difference between my current and new, asked was I availing of the savings as there was confusion circulating online and she said the savings are for people on really basic packages.

Essentially I must have got a class agent cause she was informative and got **** done quickly and correctly, I'm not sure where all the confusion is coming from in fairness although I know myself from working in a call centre when new stuff like this rolls out there is absolute confusion and chaos.

Best bet is if you get information that doesnt sound right as for it to be confirmed, and dont mention that you heard it on boards.ie, I get that all the time in work and its a lol comment.

Reference their own website if there is a problem.

I wonder is the 100meg + phone deal a mistake given it makes the 100meg cheaper then normal when all the rest are marginally more expensive... id move on this today were I you as I reckon it will be gone soon.

Tough on them though I just agreed to a 12month contract on it :P

Yeah i might just do that, and feck paying €15 for a cordless phone i'll never use the fecking thing.

Dont want the other half ringing mobiles from it - creating a massive bill for me.

Currently on the 30Mb only package myself and have just finished ordering the fibre power ultimate with the upgrade to 100Mb from 50Mb for the extra €10, and I have been told that it will cost me €40 for the new Thompson modem.

I got the phone just so I can receive the calls... have no intention of dialling out on it but by getting the phone package bundle you effectively save 15.75 per month on the normal 100meg price with standalone :P

What did you upgrade from fionny if you dont mind me asking
    How much was your installation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,367 ✭✭✭fionny

Moving from 30meg BB only which was like 52.75 per m (had that No DD charge)

And yes you do have to pay 40euro installation but thats down 60euro from previous install charge :P You cant self install the 100meg for some reason.

Also on 30Mb package only (so paying the standalone charge currently). So right now I pay €49.74 per month for the 30Mb BB.

Tried to order the 100Mb with phone via sales & they couldn't do it (I was told for new customers only).

Eventually got through to Customer Loyalty - explained my situation & desire to get the Phone+100Mb etc..

Got fantastic help from the team, now getting 100Mb BB product + Anytime Phone for €62 PM (only €12.26 more than my existing 30Mb monthly bill!!)

That's a super offer - well done UPC

'One Off' fee of €40 for Activation of Service & Tech booked to come out & 'install it' etc..

    So far, so good...;)

Nice that's exactly what I want but bk said here:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056262789

    100Mb and Phone €57

Why did you have to pay 62?

Do you pay by DD also?

I wanted the more expensive phone package (Anytime World as opposed to Freedom World) (with no limitation in terms of what hours during the day you can make calls etc.. - it was an extra €5)

Sorry - just noticed your question about DD - yes I pay via monthly DD (I've always done that though)

just rang there to get upgraded, was no problem with sales BTW, but they said Waterford has not been upgraded for 50 meg yet,so the max down here is 30 meg for the moment

They said probably the middle of the summer for 50/100 meg packages

Just to say yes they were helpful once I got transferred to the "loyalty dept" had a nice girl called Dominka (apologies if spelled wrong) who was very friendly and helpful...

My issue was I had to get annoyed down the phone to actually get the deal...

Wanted to switch from 30Mb to 50Mb + phone. Don't have the TV service and don't want it. However, the agent said the standalone charge would still apply - it's only waived for new customers.

Judging by this thread, installation guys are gonna be busy.

Those of you that have upgraded to 100Mb, did they confirm a day for the install for you?

Yes I have been given an installation date of 14th of this month so this coming Saturday which is great! Normally had to leave work to get calls done!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

called about an hour and a half ago and was promised a callback in 5 minutes, but as expected that never came so i just called back and ordered an upgrade from 30mbps + the freedom world phone package to 100mbps with the same phone and i've an engineer booked for wednesday to do the install, so happy days. :)

afaik, you need an engineer out for the 100mbps so they can make sure your existing cabling is up to scratch as not everyone will have.

EDIT: I didn't ask about the price & i don't pay by DD currently and they didn't ask, so i'll just wait for my bill and get it sorted if it's wrong.

i just don't want anything to get between me and my 100mbps. :D

I've asked for a Saturday install & they said they could arrange that. I'm not presumptious that it will be this coming Saturday, it would be great if it was, - I can appreciate their install teams will be v busy :D but I hope its soon..

Still can't get over what I'm getting for €12.76 extra per month..

Increase in downland from 30Mb to 100Mb
Increase in upload from 3Mb to 7Mb
Increase in CAP from 250Gb to 500Gb
DOCSIS 2.0 to DOCSIS 3.0 (so hopefully better dealing with potential congestion at various times of day etc..)
    Anytime Phone

Certainly wasn't expecting all that value in the 'run up' to today...

    FYI:
Hi @FionnyAnseo - the Thompson modem is a modem & router combined, and you can connect your own router if you wish to do so.

Yeah im gonna do the exact same, it would just break my heart to take a day off work and they never show up.

Tbh I didnt think they still did 8mb, when i started with UPC 8meg was the top level, the 12meg, then 20meg, then 30meg now 100meg! with nothing more then a few euro in the pricelist... couldnt really be happier....

Got on to the loyalty department right after 3 other departments swore blind I could not avail of the new bundle.

Got moved over in the space of 5 minutes. 100Mb broadband on its way got 3 more tv points added too.

She said I did not need an engineer out so I just have to wait for the couriers call and I will receive my new modem, dvr box and 3 new digi boxes.

My lines were only enabled last November so I don't believe the engineer needs to come and install the modem. I conformed the modem would just be delivered twice.

I'm on 20mb/250gb cap, have phone and lowest digital tv package with it discounted to 45e a month
I fancy the 50mb BB, reading here is that just an extra 5e a month? I don't mind the 12mth contract as UPC is a keeper for me.
I'm asking before taking the plunge and probably spending half an hour on hold!
    Thanks

Fibre Power Ultimate: Fibre Power Broadband 50Mb, Digital Max, Digital+, Home Phone, Freetime World. for 75euro.... you may need to get through to the "loyalty dept" to get that deal as the normal sales people wont do it for some stupid reason.

I'm guessing they've told the sales department they can't give the deals to existing customers, while telling the Loyalty one, to give it without a fight to anyone who cares enough to end up there (probably under some other conditions, like an account in good standing etc.)

Be careful, sales were about to upgrade me from 10 to 12 MB and add on phone for €6.

But when I queried if the €7.75 standalone charge was now gone they said no, that's for new customers only.

Transferred me to customer loyalty who fixed that (but as I've only been with them 2 days could have canceled and restarted anyway)

Rebooted modem and now am on 12MB (well 11 and a bit) and phone is now working.

FYI http://192.168.100.1/gscan.asp and "click here to restart your cable modem"
does what it says on the tin.

I placed my order online, 100Mb plus Freetime World, Costs €57 per month. I

No mention of it for only new customers, Was talking to there help department by way of the chat system they have now. Asked her about the standalone charge no longer being applied if you order the phone aswell, So i said there is no reason for me not to get it anymore. She confirmed this.

Also, Just to note, It said there was no 'one off cost' and i was able to select self install!

Say's it should take around 4 days for the equipment to get to me.

Take care again... I wouldnt be surprised if you end up with 2 accounts...

That online agent thing was useless i tried them first and they just shrugged their shoulders and said tough you have to pay more... I reckon that is an outsourced company who has no authority at all.

She really was helpful, I was already signed in with my account, All details were already entered for me, So there is no way they would make the mistake of adding the second account. My account number was on it aswell.

My guess is if there is a problem, It shouldn't be hard to fix.

i don't pay by DD anyway, so i'm not fussed either way, i just won't pay till it's billed at the right price. :)

On 30Mb, I know what you are thinking, The installation of the new router, I didn't think that could be done by the customer and taught it had to be installed by the engineer.

Guess we will find out soon.
