Right have you gotten your student pin which should 4 numbers long?

    Go to umail.ucc.ie
Place you student number which should be 9-10 numbers long in the first box and then place you student pin twice in the second box.
i.e so if your student pin is 1234 the number you need to put in the second box is 12341234. Then click on mail when you get to the next window.

Is a pen and paper enough to bring to your first lecture?

Yup. Best tip i can give is take notes and put the date on every page. Take down anything that might be relevant. Even if you feel like what your writing is crap, you will be surprised how useful it will be come next may when you have a book of dated notes

Wish i had the sense to do that

Yes, its sufficient for the first lecture in each subject. After that, it would be beneficial to print out the notes off Blackboard and bring them with you to the lectures - it will save you a lot of writing and is a handy point of reference.

    A good few of my timetabled lectures don’t have assigned rooms/lecture halls, just a note saying see department. Do I need to call each department to find out where to go or will the timetable be updated on Monday do ye think? Also I seem to be missing a sociology lecture, only have three during the week, is that right? This is the timetable I am reading;

    http://www.ucc.ie/en/CollegesandDepartments/ArtsCelticStudiesandSocialSciences/InformationforIncomingFirstYearStudents/TimetableandInitialLectureSchedules/Arts-I-Timetable-2010-(2).pdf

    Any help much appreciated :)

Does the John Smith bookshop only buy second hand text books, or do they buy/give store credit for ordinary books as well like Lonely Planet guides, Penguin paperbacks etc? Also, is there really a John Smith? Dun dun dun.

I'm almost certain that you can buy them through the college, or they'll at least tell you where to get them. Possibly John Smith Bookshop, I think i saw them there during the open day last year (I have a friend who really likes stationary so we kinda had to go there).
I think we were told something like that in orientation anyway, but as per usual i took nothing in after around 2.

I used to be on another forum & the admin used John Smith when he sent out e-mails to members. I think that counts =p Also The Doctor uses the name. (A bit off topic I know but I had to say it)

Well you need to get a password for the open access computers, but I think that's all. You follow the timetable on the website and any tutorials or extra stuff will be explained next week afaik.

Also, you missed getting harassed by bank people trying to get you to open an account.

Hope everything's ok with you and that this helped.

I'm pretty sure that they will be around for another while yet! One guy asked was I a first year, looked a bit miffed when I told him I'm actually in third year :p

Check Blackboard to get any notes that you need for your first day, cheaper to print at home than in college, where you won't be able to until you get your password for the computers

This is my fifth year in UCC and I'm still being handed fresher-related fliers. Someone is going to be on the receiving end of an angry rant from me next week if it keeps happening!

when will we find out what books are needed for 1 year arts ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 199 ✭✭Aoi

when will we find out what books are needed for 1 year arts ??

I know that for us science students they'll mention them during lectures. So I assume it'll be the same for arts, since everyne at both orientations were doing different modules.

Check your email though, I just got one from a maths lecturer telling us to buy a book before the first lecture - how many do you think will bother?

    Probably none. :D

I suppose it depends on what subjects you're doing so. I know for subjects like English and Psychology, they only talk about the course for the first week, what books to get, what they'll cover etc.

Obviously your maths lecture wants to start straight away. I didn't get any emails off my maths studies lecturers anyway. :)
