How long before UCC actually email you? UL have apparenlty been spamming their freshers all week and I havent heard a peep from UCC yet  Or have people actually heard from them? :P

I'm going to UCC too and asked this question about a page back.
Apparently nobody else has heard from them either but they promised to be in contact with everyone by 3rd of September.
We're going back the 20th anyways and the web timetables are up!

I'm sure you need an email address issued by the college so they can email you. You'll get this email when you're at your orientation I think. UCC need you on the database I presume.

Just like to know, whether or not it's a difficult course? I'm thinking of doing Chemistry, Maths, App. Maths and Physics for the first year subjects, but I haven't done Physics for the LC - would I be ok dya think? And how were the hours too? :D

Its a great course!I didnt do physics either and passed my exam first time round the physics is tough but just do the continual assessment and you will be fine!

Are the timetables up on the web set in stone, or might they change. I will have to arrange to get my boys minded 3 afternoons a week:((timetable really doesn't suit school times) and just want to make sure that it isn't liable to change before I do.

Personally I've found the timetables and modules on respective websites to be accurate.

dear sweet jesus no. i got an A1 in LC physics and the physics in 1st year in that option (PY1052+1053) absolutely killed me. deadly stuff.

2nd year biochem here! We do PY1001 in 1st year, which is basically a very thorough introduction to physics...like someone already said do your best on the continuous assessment (2 in term exams, labs and homework assignments) then you should have at least 20% going into the final exam, which is very repeatitive anyway! :)

Mail me if you want to know anything else!

Last year, there were a few Chemical Sciences people in PY1052 (the predominantly Maths Science and Physics/Astrophysics module) with me who hadn't done physics for the Leaving Cert. They had the option of doing PY1001 (the Biochem one) instead as long as they hadn't got a timetable clash, and indeed they were highly encouraged to do so!

You might manage ok with PY1052 if you did Applied Maths for the Leaving, but otherwise I wouldn't go near it. It's crazy stuff!

PS: The hours are fairly intensive too- it's a 10 credit module shoved into one term, so you have four lectures, a tutorial and a three hour lab each week. You'll also have lab reports and homework sets to hand in each week, so it'll take up quite a lot of your time outside of lectures too. That said though, it shouldn't be your main concern- if you want to do physics (and you feel you'll be able for it), you should go for it and not be put off by the minor niggles.

    Hi

Getting a little ahead of myself here but anyway!

I'm going to be doing Social Science and i was wondering, if i took all the Applied Psych modules and got a 2.1 or higher overall, would i have much of a chance of getting into HDip in Psych afterwards?

Thanks for the extensive info Richard - much appreciated! I've always had an interest in Physics outside of school, but I never chose it for the LC - with much regret I chose Biology instead :(

Do you think I should go ahead and choose Chem, Physics, Bio and Maths or Chem, Physics, Maths and App Maths for the first year subjects!?

Not a bother PY 1001 is what you will be doing the easy of the easy physics college wise...still tough though if you havent done it before

To the best of my knowledge this won't change at all with term so close to starting. Keep an eye out for any additional tutorials or labs you might have in the future too, they can happen any day of the week and normally are inconveniencing :( Best of luck at any rate!

It depends on what you're into, and what you plan on doing after college I suppose. You might want to check if your subject choices in 1st Year affect what you can do in later years- it's often the case that if you don't do a certain subject in 1st Year then certain avenues are closed off to you.

Thanks. I knew it was going to be hard doing a full time degree with kids, I guess I just hoped the time-table would suit better. Going to speak to a friend who has finished the first year of the course and see how much extra things I should be expecting during the year.

    Hi.
My friend is doing EarlyChildhood Studies first year and I was looking at the time table. Will she only have one lecture a week?

On a different note, Anyone doing Commerce with German? Whats it like? :D

Nope you don't have to have it done. It isn't a requirement. I have a friend who didn't do it in the Leaving Cert and she flew it.

Granted it'll help you but if you're interested nearly all of the course's modules' will begin from scratch - like Irish History in 1st year.

I'm heading into 3rd year History, any questions welcome.

Give it a shot, if you don't like it you can always drop it.

Just a quick note, 1st year can be quite rigid in its structure, there isn't much choice whereas in 2nd year you can pretty much structure your course the way you want and the choice is great. 1st year can be slightly off-putting in this way I think.
