Cheers. You may regret making that offer. I'll wreck your head :)

The girl working in the Mardyke has just finished it.

Where are you gonna do your placements?

You won't wreck my head at all! First year has changed a bit since I did it :D There is another guy working in the Mardyke that has finished it as well. Just don't be afraid to ask questions, thats the main thing!

I don't know where I'll be doing them, we're placed in the schools, rather than us choosing them, three weeks of teaching practise this year! You'll have to come to a few of the boards coffee mornings as well!!! :D

I was just about to ask here about book lists actually... I'm starting first year and so far I've only been able to find a booklsit for Sociology. I'll be doing History, Sociology, Studies in Psychology and either Politics or Economics...

Does anyone know what the main first year books are, in particular for history and studies in psychology? Or know of anywhere I could send an email to get the list?

Am really looking forward to starting in UCC too by the way, this thread has been a great help so far. :)

From what i remember you get the required reading for psychology in you introductory lecture. When I did it we only had to get one book, can't for the life of me remember the name of it though! I'm not too sure about history but I'd say it's the same. As for politics you'll need three books. One about Irish politics, one about political philosophy and one about international politics. They'll give you the titles in your lecture because some of them change year to year. Economics didn't have any required reading when I did it although we were advised to buy freakonomics...I'm not sure if that still the case.

Last year for Psychology we needed to get two books:

    - Psychology: The Science of Mind and Behaviour. By Passer and Smith.

    - Classic Sources Psychology. By Pettijohn.

I hate advertising ads, but I'm selling them on adverts.ie because I'm not keeping on Psychology in 2nd year. Just in case they're the same books that will be used. :D

Also the Sociology book wasn't compulsory and students I talked to said it was a waste of money. I didn't buy it myself. But don't take my word for it, the course may have changed which requires you to get a book.

That's excellent, thank you. I think I may wait until the introductory lessons in that case then just so I don't buy a book I may not end up getting much use out of or one that isn't being referenced by the lecturer.

Do you mind if I ask you another question too pirateninja (or anyone else for that matter:)). I'm in a pickle between choosing either politics or economics at the moment. I think my greater interest lies in politics and international relations but a good grounding in economics seems very desirable to me as well.

So out of the two, which course did you find more interesting? Does one course have significantly better/more interesting lecturers than the other or anything like that?

When I did History (in '07) there was no required text book, may still be the same. The lecturers give you books that are reccommended reading during lectures and on assignment sheets.

Also, your question about Politics. It's worth trying in 1st year, it does indeed have an International Relations section. Sadly, Dr. Whelan passed away, he lectured it and was fantastic so I don't know how good it'll be good under new guidance. What ever the result, in Politics second year you'll get much more diversity and direct modules to IR if I recall correctly. Hope that makes sense!

Out of the two I probably found economics more interesting! ( I do love economics though) Personally I found economics much more practical, as in I actually use what I've learned. At the same time though politics can be very interesting, political philosophy is rubbish if you ask me but everyone who does politics seems to enjoy it and it's quite easy to do well in it.

I heard from a friend that we need our passport and birth cert to complete registration.
    Is this true?

Edit: Nevermind, found out we do.

You only need them if you're changing your registered name.

I needed to bring mine because my name was registered in Irish, and I wanted to change it to English.

Well we have to choose now I think and then we are officially put down for the course on the 15th!
Option 1 is more general, but I kinda want to do Chemical Physics next year and to do that I must choose Option 3, but it just seems very difficult! :(
