    Hi,
I have a question. I need to get a form filled in by UCC so I can keep using the Drugs Payment Scheme Card, where do I go? I need to get it filled ASAP or else I'll have to fork out €233 instead of just the €120.

West Wing - Student Examinations and records office, go to the first floor and its to the left. You'd need to have registered online and have your student card first though, I got one filled out last week but she put down due to register for third year cos the registration isn't open yet

When do Arts Students choose their subjects?

Techically you can sort that out at home as early as you like, as for officially choosing them, I can't remember back, but it'll definitely be this month. You can always ring the appropriate department in the college to check it out.

Don't worry, you'll be emailed all the info as soon as it's available. :)

I just got a letter off UCC! Everything looks great, just one slight problem they put my Dads name in as the student attending? How they even have his name(middle name too!) is beyond me... Now I suppose he has done quite alot of degrees in UCC but still... Anybody else have this problem?

    Hi

Getting a little ahead of myself here but anyway!

I'm going to be doing Social Science and i was wondering, if i took all the Applied Psych modules and got a 2.1 or higher overall, would i have much of a chance of getting into HDip in Psych afterwards?

Probably. That's what Higher Diplomas are for, to transfer from one area to another. If you email or call someone associated with the HDip in Psych they could tell you straight out. Might be worth checking if you did enough psych modules could you go straight to a masters but I'd imagine that'd be a long shot.

What's history like for Arts? Would you need to have done it for the LC?

I loved it, but it depends on your personality I suppose. Have a look at the module options, past papers on line (through booleweb.ucc.ie) Actually I'd say that history is one of the more practical Arts subjects as you learn research and analysis skills which are pretty useful in the real non-academic world.

It's a good subject to study along with either philosophy or economics, or archeology obviously. If your studying Arts just to do one subject covered in Arts, like a language, it might be worth avoiding more demanding subjects and doing things like Celtic Studies. Cynical I know but practical, and if that's what you're looking for why not be practical about it.

Like most Arts subjects you get what you put into to, you can do little work, cram at the end and get a reasonable 2:1, or you can obsess and join the history society etc, and go on and do an MA or PHD etc. I did it in first year, didn't think I'd keep it on, ended up doing a MA in it and now I'm just finished the dip as a history teacher.

Not having done it for your LC would be no problem whatsoever. A lot of what you'll be studying won't have been covered on the LC syllabus at all, and what has been will be covered from scratch, with more emphasis on analysing the past than just learning dates. I wouldn't let that stop you at all if you're interested in the subject.

Nope, I'd contact them straight away though. I have heard of pps numbers being mixed up, so i'd advise that you check that, especially if you were applying on the results of a PLC course or are a mature student.

I was wondering for science courses, (I'm doing Chemical Sciences) where you have to put in lab time. do you have to buy supplies for the labs like lab coats and goggles?

Lab times will be arranged for you as part of the normal timetable. Normally you pay €20-30 at the start of the year (you'll be told how much) that will cover lab kits and all of that stuff.

Nope I applied through CAO, I am just after completing my LC. I gave them a buzz today, my own name was down correctly on their system and on the CAO. I was told to check when registering online what name came up. My Dads name came up again, but by then the office was closed, so ill have to ring tomorrow.

I reckon it is just a human error, somebody saw my address and then matched it with my Dads name who did a Masters and a few other stuff before in UCC.

Just got an email back from Vic Mills stating you can check in at 9-5 on Monday. Orientation for Engineering of course just happens to be from 9-5. Any ideas - should I rush to accoms to check in and back during the lunch break or what?

You can check in any day after Monday. But sure, you can take a walk to Vic Mills during your lunch, but reception is closed from 1pm-2pm. Maybe give Ger a ring to see if you can work something out? :)

sorry i meant the 18th:rolleyes: there are ones like understanding your timetable, surviving labs etc., you can only go to 2 so i'm just wondering if anyone knows which two would be beneficial?

The workshops weren't great i thought!
I found it more fun just to wander around the college and join clubs and such!

You should be able to log in at sit.ucc.ie, I tried logging in to that one but I couldn't. When you log in another page pops up, and student administration is on the right hand side, which is what u go into to register

This is indeed the correct way :)

    Thank you,
i doubt there's a hope of getting into masters afterwards coz there are only about 6 psych modules throughout the 3 yrs. i have done 2 plc psych based courses though so hopefully that will go towards proving my interest when it comes to a hdip application!

I guess find out when the move in date is, mostly likely Monday or now :P

You can move whenever you like. I'm heading up next Sunday, yippee! And my lectures don't start til the 27th. Bit of time to get settled in and lounge about!

    Hi

I'm due to register on the 9th of Sept. I've already done the 1st part and paid my fees etc.

I've already moved to Cork and I'm wondering is there anything I need to get done like register my laptop etc that I can do before the 9th?

Thinking about it what do you need to get done at the start?

Well all you need is the proof of registration for the 2nd part of registration and the other things they tell you to bring for it!There you'll get ur student id and if you like you can register your laptop that day as well!(i think). But there is nothing else you need to do before registration

Get the password for the computers and how to log on, which is during the second part of rgistration, for registering your laptop you must fill out some form online as well as far as I remember - details are on here

Once you get your student card, you can go down and register for biometric access to the Mardyke, if you plan on using the gym/pool - free access
