In first year it is tedious a lot of the time. There are some good modules though. In second and third year the options in it are great though so i'm continuing on with it as of next month. I'll be doing it as my major.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,016 ✭✭✭lilmissprincess

Arts: You pick your four subjects in registration BUT you can change into another class (if it isn't full) if you really don't like one. I did it for English, changed to Economics after about three weeks. The deadline for this is the 31st October afaik... I'm doing my degree in Celtic Civilisation and Economics, which is totally different for what I signed up for!

It's an option like, but I'm more inclined towards either Geology or Ecology at the moment to be honest.

I hated the sociology module for nursing. Out of 190 in the year I never heard of one person saying they liked it. But then again we only did the sociology of health and illness.

Wednesday 8th Accounting, Finance, BIS, Gov

    Friday 10th
    Nursing

Monday 13th Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, OT, S&L, Public Health

Tuesday 14th Computer Science, Environmental, Mathematical Sciences, Physics & Astrophysics

Wednesday 15th Biological & Chemical, Genetics, Chemical Sciences

    Thursday 16th BA(Arts!)

    Friday 17th BA(Arts!)

    Sat 18th & Sun 19th Freshers Fest

You have picked yourself one hell of a course for work! I'm going into third year elec eng myself and I'm really enjoying this course. You should have a small enough class, so you should get to know everyone, which is handy when it comes to assignments ;). Lecturers are really friendly as well. Enjoy the course.

Same as Reacher regarding PMs etc.

Also, all incoming female students, if you could all forward on a full profile with vital statistics and a photograph to myself, Reacher and Eliot it would be much appreciated.

    Yours in Pervdom,
    Bryan.

    Right! :p

Name's Yann Donnelly, aged... (checks passport) 18, heading into Elec Eng as previously stated. Plans for the rest of the year include building a head-tracking system for HAWX, discovering manga and drinking loads of Asti Spumente on my balcony :pac: If you're in my course don't be afraid to talk to me, I'm the quiet guy with a black hat :)

Geez Byron. I had planned to pass off as a first year on this thread, implanting myself (long term, in more ways than one) within the young 'uns so as to play on their insecurities and nervousness, thus in the end luring them into our ring of ... hmmm ... friendship. If your direct approach fails I say shame on you!

To the first years: PM away! In any case I'll be doing orientation as part of the peer support setup for Maths Science students. I'll be the guy with the dashing good looks, quick intellect, funny personality and a disturbing propensity to lie.

You're the guy in the hat? Sure I'll pick you out of a dozen thousand students. ;)

Sup Darren, I'll be seeing you in CS quite soon!

    (turns to general UCC populace)
Hey there everyone, I'm Robbie. My online alias may lead people to believe I'm a woman, which I'm not. Speaking of, are there going to be any women at all in our course? :P
Also, anyone know where to find our timetable or subject options?

UCC Book of Modules is your friend (Not for getting women but subjects - oooh sexy)

    Have a look here: http://www.ucc.ie/modules/descriptions/page014.html

I'm assuming this is correct. CS1050 to CS1109 would probably be your modules for 1st year. (1 indicates year, 2 for 2nd etc.)

Basically I want to be a post-primary teacher, Spanish and another subject. I was thinking spanish and Geography but it doesnt look like thats possible?

Basically I want to be a post-primary teacher, Spanish and another subject. I was thinking spanish and Geography but it doesnt look like thats possible?

Well I'm sure you can pick those subjects. Look here: http://www.ucc.ie/en/study/undergrad/what/acsss/arts/

You're only allowed to pick one subject per group. (Four subjects to pick)

Spanish and Geography are in seperate groups, so you can do them.

About the workload, it's all about if you want to do it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,559 ✭✭✭UpTheSlashers

Ya but theyre in "6" and "6b" so thats kinda confusing me. Will i be able bring them both on to second year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,500 ✭✭✭ReacherCreature

I'm not sure if you can pick them; someone on the forum could shed light.

If you are, you can bring them forward to 2nd and 3rd year. You can decide to Joint, Major and Single one or the other subject.
Single Subject: 50 credits in one subject and 10 credits in the other.
Major Subject: 40 credits in one subject and 20 credits in the other.
Joint Subject: 30 credits in each subject.

    Understandable?

Cheers, I think I'd do then joint if I could bring them on

No need to fear, for now I am here!
*Groups 6(a) and 6(b) become one group in Second and Third Arts. Therefore only one subject from Celtic Civilisation, Geography, Italian, Philosophy, Spanish may be continued in Second and Third Arts.

Ya, that's what I feared. I'm not sure what to do now, would it be too difficult to take up another language? I got HC1 in Spanish

I reckon it would. You're expect to be proficient as it is going into a language in first year. In second year the game is upped so to speak.

English could be an option though?

I'm not sure, my other LC subjects were dcg and ag science and there's not much I can do with them. English is a no-no unfortunately for me. I did ordinary maths and ordinary Irish so I doubt I'd be able for those options. What if I took german at beginners level in 1st year?

I think you should be looking at what you might like to do and not get lumped with something or do something you have to do. If you have an interest, sure, go for it but if you pick wrongly you're left with it unless you change.
