The backlog wont have any direct effect on you. By the time there is another recruitment drive and you get through there will probably be no backlog anymore. All you need to worry about is taking each step at a time. Public Jobs, Apply when campaign opens, Aptitude, Interview, Background checks, Medical, and PCT. Thats enough to be worrying about. Let the backlog take care of itself. It will take a while to get through each stage of the process anyway.

Charlie Flanagan makes reference to the embargo being lifted so that must be a good thing, its not just one source claiming its going to happen

"over 600 senior Gardaí will have retired before the end of the year. Even if Minister Ahern is genuinely planning to break the recruitment embargo, new Gardaí will not be able to contribute as much as vastly-experienced senior personnel."

Will be very interesting to see what Ahern answers when the question is put to him in the Dáil, question time was at 2.30pm.

If they have no criminal convictions I don't see where the problem would be.

I work in PAS but not in the Garda section.

As long as vetting doesnt show up anything and you have no criminal convictions and you have officially resigned your membership you should be ok.
    GARDA SÍOCHÁNA ACT 2005
16.—(1) On being appointed, each member of the Garda Síochána shall make before a Peace Commissioner a declaration in the following form:
“I hereby solemnly and sincerely declare before God that—
    • I will faithfully discharge the duties of a member of the Garda Síochána with fairness, integrity, regard for human rights, diligence and impartiality, upholding the Constitution and the laws and according equal respect to all people,
    • while I continue to be a member, I will to the best of my skill and knowledge discharge all my duties according to law, and
    • I do not belong to, and will not while I remain a member form, belong to or subscribe to, any political party or secret society whatsoever.”.

I heard a whisper last night that there will be a competition next year. Although our Garda section has been broken up at the moment. As soon as they put together the section again I'll know there's some activity brewing.

Anyone who wants to apply should join the publicjobs website and get an alert for the Emergency Services. Then you'll know when it's official.

That's okay to hear Oggmonster but I wouldn't be getting anyone's hopes up here though. We have a range of age-groups & personalities who read these here threads and I for one am an advocate of not posting whispers and/or rumours as I believe it does no-one any good. I personally think it would be better to wait until we have actually cold-hard facts before getting the hopes of anyone up.

Well Oggmonster works in PAS, those are the kind of rumours people like to hear. May be rumours but least they're from the inside.

It doesn't matter that Oggmonster works in PAS, it's still a rumour. Things could v.easily change again so there may not be a recruitment drive, or maybe there will be. Who knows? But until I get that long awaited glorious email that will enable me to actually fly with joy:D, I'm not taking any rumours/suggestions v. seriously.

Ah sure if we go down that road, there be no garda recruitment forum on boards.ie, all we discuss is rumours anyway. No harm in it.

I'd say something if it was a negative rumour!

Well considering I've been waiting years to apply I don't pay heed to rumours anymore. I remember this time last year rumours were flying around about a recruitment drive in November, come November nothing happened. Then after that it turned into ''oh a drive in Jan/Feb'' and then ''defo a drive in April/May''. Getting my hopes up to the point I was sure there would be a recruitment drive in 08/09, and when there wasn't it knocked me back BIG TIME and affected me. I'm sure I'm not alone in that. So forgive me for not wanting myself or others to be sorely disappointed again. You could argue I shouldn't log onto the forum, but this forum has been very helpful in the past and I imagine it will continue to be.. so not logging in is not an option!

And please don't '''' at me when I'm making a point that is very serious to me. I'm not giving out to anyone, we are all in the same boat after all.:)

Look you have a valid point, but at the end of the day, it's a public forum and people are going to post rumours and hearsays.

Don't be giving people lectures for posting rumours.
It's not a case they are doing it maliciously, they are just posting what they heard, on a public forum

Eroo if you choose not to listen to rumours that's great for you and Sam, but as mentioned this is a public forum, no need to give people a lecture if they post a comment that's a rumour. Just get over it and ignore it.

Best to draw a line on the issue now and get back to postings that are related to recruitment

I'm not giving lectures. I just don't believe in posting rumours after what happened last year i.e. rumours that led to nothing. Maybe it would be an idea to start a rumours thread, if that is at all plausible. After all this is a thread about the starting application process, not about speculating as to whether or not there will be a drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,128 ✭✭✭Geri Boyle

I get what you're saying eroo. Rumours not coming to fruition is very disappointing but there are other people on here who are waiting on a drive who do want to hear rumours, so asking that people dont post what they hear is unfair on people who do want to hear them. Once its posted in good faith and labeled as rumour not fact then you just have to learn to distance yourself from rumour yourself and let others deal with it in their own way. Isnt a glimmer of hope is better than none for some?

I have more than a glimmer of hope, but I dont base it on rumours. I base it on my belief that I will get in the process and be successful.:)

Just one other thing, some of you seem to think I'm picking an argument or giving lectures. This is not so. Some of you think it's fair to put rumours up for people who want to hear them, but equally I think it's unfair to put up rumours when there are people who don't want to see them. Two sides to it after all.

I wasn't trying to get anyone's hopes up. Someone on here said the other day that if I hear anything I should post here.

It's not up to us to run a competition. We will be told whether to run one or not. All I'm saying is that I heard there will be a new competition next year. That's not set in stone but it was from someone who would know.
