Psni, this is just a once off post, but on behalf of evreybody at boards.ie, thanks for sorting the thread out, it had gotton ridiculous, and needed sorting. fair play to you.

I was just wondering,if it isnt too much hassle, could you post a thread for people that have just begun in templemore, tht want to give us hopefuls the low down on life in college? if you could that would be great thanks.

    Sorry for the rant.

    Lets get posting guys:cool:

Yeah it looks to be the same on publicjobs.ie . It is only asking people to register for alerts of upcoming campaigns. That's a good sign. Looks like one is on the way.

    Hey Greydiamond,

Just referring to ur comment that the reserves are just wannabes.. I'm in the Reserves for the last 6 months and the reason i joined is because i'm still in college and thought the experiences will be good when i do apply for the full time gardai.. Plus to find out is that what i want to do with the rest of my life or just continue with my degree..
And believe me, when ur on night shifts doing 10pm to 6am and dealing with all that sh*t, who cares if u are full time or part time, the fact is the gardai are seriously lacking man power and every bit helps.

Hope this doesnt come across like i'm arguing with you, just giving you my view.

I sat the aptitude test a few months back, February.
Now I'm looking to reapply and curious to know whats the likelihood of me being able to reapply in the next intake?
On public jobs it says 'Applicants will be permitted to undergo elements of the selection process only once within any six month period.'
In theory if the next aptitudes take place in early August I should be ok?Right?
How soon are the next round of aptiutdes going to take place?

hey murphy not in the reserves but i totally agree wit ur view. just a quick question how long is the process for the reserves in comparsion to the full garda. hopefully i wont have to but if i dont get guards this time i think it would really help joining the reserve .

I agree with you here murph. I'm sure the comment was tongue in cheek but if he really wants to be a fulltime Garda he is going to have to work with and respect all his colleagues. Who knows, a reserve could save his ass some day.

JOHNNYIRISH you definately will have to wait 6months, but yes apply for feedback and appeal your score then see the outcome i think people are crazy not to appeal you just never know it only costs a stamp ,,,,,,,

    Thanks for that Goouch..
Completely messed up the analytical reasoning, but then again all I'd gotten were a few books and no courses.
Is the analytical reasoning something you can improve or is it the sort of thing you either have or your haven't?
Flew through the other sections, but that section brought me right down..
So if I can't sit an aptitude in the summer, I take it will be September before the next aptitude will be?

I didnt mean it like that now (im probably still just a bit bitter since I failed). Did someone say that the drive is only going to last a week?? So is anyone going to do one of those external courses? Found one that will send out a CD and booklet with loads of questions for €200. Anyone find anything better?

I didn't do a course so cant recommend one but I would say that lots of sample questions would have been very helpful so the above sounds OK. Perhaps a bit pricy. I dont know, maybe you get what you pay for!

I wouldn't get a course for the Apptitude test. It's easy enough to finde similar tests on the Internet for free, or at least much much cheaper.

Preparation course for the Interview and Report Writing is a different matter though - I think you would be better of spending your money on that.

I failed the report writing twice, 3rd time I did the 1 day course and passed no problem.

This thread is for helping people with the process not putting them down. There could be any amount of reasons for not getting the reserves. Perhaps they feel with him being in college, could not give enough of his time to the job but would be able to do so if he was finished his course and went fulltime. Consider all factors before posting in future.

for anyone who is applying again after failing, you can only apply after 6 months. this means that anyone who has applied from january of this year and sat the aptituded cant apply now. they will have to wait until september. so basically anyone who applied last year and failed can apply this time.

Not likely to ring your current employers, but have a story just incase

Definately have a story or even better tell them what you are doing. It is not normal practice to contact current employers but it has happened ( to paolo5 I think).......Its better not to be caught on the hop!

Does anybody know any good courses to do? I don't fancy failing and waiting 6 months to re-apply! Did anybody do the Kilroys or garda entry courses?

Roll on next week & good luck to everyone!!! :D

hi im completely new to this site. im very enthusiastic about joining tha gardai but am lacking on info. the question i would like to be answered most is..... will family members (first cousins)having criminal record (served time in jail) affect my chances of getting in? even though i do not associate with them at all..i would be really grateful if this question was answered thanks.

No generally speaking this shouldn't hinder your application. The background checks are more to rule out major drugdealing ties, terrorist envolvement, ira membership and that sort of thing and then of course stuff you will have done yourself.
A speeding fine or caught with a spliff 10 years ago, or havin' a wee on the street are not things that will stop you getting in but if you have done any of these be prepared to be asked about them! :D

Does anyone know anyone who made a successful appeal. My son failed the interview by 7 marks. He never thought to appeal. He just geared himself up for the next round. Does lodging an appeal go against you when you re apply ?

One of the posters here succesfully appealed the Report writing. This is what she wrote about it:

    11-04-2007, 16:44 #3947

    cul_irl

I was able to successfully appeal the decision. I went down by 1 mark in the report writing but there were a few uncontrolable events that occurred that morning that contributed to this (some of my earlier posts will explain). On review the PAS & psychologist agreed in my favour and the decision was overturned. Appeals like this are rarely successful so I'm pretty lucky and delighted to have been given a second chance. If it had been the interview that I had went down in.....well, then that would have been a different story

So from what she says, appealing the interview doesn't look that easy For some more details, you can try to look for her posts in the old Garda Thread, or even PMing her.

I wouldn't imagine that appealing would go against your son, as long as it's done in a professionall way of course.

    jos28 wrote: »

No appealing won't go against you, providing it is done in a professional manner. When re-applying at the next possible round of applications you will be given a new and different candidate number so essentially then your old file would be closed and you would be starting for scratch again.

Yeah I would agree with the others here. It wont go against him. He should still re -apply, when he can again, so as not to hold himself up if an appeal doesn't work out.
I wouldn't put a huge amount of hope on the appeal though. As oj said it is a difficult procedure, even when there is only one mark hanging in the balance. 7 marks seems a lot to try and claw back on appeal, especially if it is out of one section. Best of luck with it though!

Thanks very much Haz33 i was really paronoid but feel better now, do you also know if they contact present and past employers. and also im 19 now and will be 20 in january i am currently in school and sitting my leaving in a few weeks so im a tad bit too late for this intake do you have any idea when the next one is... Are you Going for this one? good look if you are....

Thanks everyone for the replies. He just had a look and as Haz said 7 marks is a lot to try and get from an appeal. So here's to the next round and good luck to everyone. Thanks again.

They dont normally contact current employers but the possibilty is it may happen so be prepared. They can call previous employers and those who you put down for references, but probably not them all. This will vary from person to person.
Unfortunately you have no results to apply with which is unlucky for you.
AFAIK there should be one more before the end of the year ( rumoured to be sept ) but look this is a "take it as it comes" recruitment process. No one really knows what goes on so just register with public jobs and stay tuned to boards for any info you can get.
I have passed everything , just waiting for date for PCT, so hoping to be in templemore for August.
Best of luck with that LC. Concentrate all your energy on that for now!
