Spent about two hours here last night writing up notes to help people out - only one guy said he appreciated it, while everone else bragging they've got their A's. I think so much of that guy who said he appreciated it - good manners cost nothing!!

    Good luck to everyone anyway

Sorry I actually thought after my exam 'must go thank that person on boards for the french notes, I used a good bit of the diary stuff,' it just slipped my mind when I got home. :( Thanks a million for the notes, they were really really helpful. :)

    OH MY GOD

I just realised it was an email.
I wrote a formal letter... with the addresses and everything :(
And i even totally blanked on the layout, so i just had it as best as i could remember.

I'm totally losing marks for that.

And i was really happy with that question :(:(

    Apart ca..

Comprehensions - which im usually not the best at - were lovely.
Did the internet question - managed to make it personal by talking about how my brother is on a trip around the world, and we use it to keep in touch.
    Did the 'letter'... pants.
And did the question about sport. Was running out of time, so i kinda waffled a lot. But i got about 90 words down, so i'm happy enough.

    Listening was quite good too.

Overall, bar the email fiasco, im a happy camper!

how many marks can be taken off?
and could he get away with it bcos his girlfriend could be his best friend??

please please reply somebody in the know, i tried examinations.ie but no info there.

You're very welcome - the simple phrases get the marks. They come "from the heart" - ha ha!! And that's what we like as examiners, not the chunks of learned off stuff.

Well done and hope results day brings lots of smiles! :)

well they tend to be really picky about stuff like that in LC French,as in he could lose nearly all the marks for that....do you know how obvious it was that he was talking about a girlfriend? Like he could just have a particularily small friend...or something?

Jesus guys "Cartable" is like from first year French. Weird how the easy words slip your mind when you haven't used them in ages.

    Anyway,

    Bonne continuation!

    Hi Nassface:

Tell your friend not to worry - no marks will be deducted for mentioning girlfriend instead of best friend as it's the same thing more or less!

what about if you write less than 90 words for the first essay??
    (not much less than 90)

    Hi Saffy:

Don't worry about the no. of words ... it's the QUALITY that gets the marks.

I've given full marks before to a pupil who wrote less; and full marks to another who wrote over a page ... both were of excellent quality ... so don't worry!!! :)

How much many marks would you lose for giving a formal letter layout instead of an email?

Can u clarify? this is so helpful thank u and sorry 4 being picky he just needs a high b/a grade in francais merci ;)

You'd lose very, very few marks for the formal letter layout, if any!

You see, there's no marks given for e mail layout ( in previous yrs anyway). You'd lose 2 marks max, that's all!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,454 ✭✭✭mink_man

i thonk i said 3 years for the first question when it was obviously 3 days! will i get any marks for this! a slip of the pencil!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23 Teacher 28

Tell your friend not to worry. He won't lose marks.

What he has written is of excellent quality. His girlfriend is his best friend (!) so it's the same thing - tell him to relax and enjoy the summer - sounds like he'll do extremely well!!

unfortunately 3 years would get 0 marks

Meilleure copine would be more current. (Watch the ortographe) If he says meilleure amie that would certainly count as his girlfriend.

James - your notes on the journal intime saved me today, I had never done one before and think I got pretty good marks.

For the question on the internet, I think my french grammer was fairly complex and correct, but I felt that I was a bit rambly and to a certain extent off the point, talking about the advantages/disadvantages etc - what do you think is the maximum I could get?
    Thanks for all your help.

you'll get about a C1 but it's hard to define ''basic''.. that to you could be a huge standard to others so i'm not sure.

Well I had like one si clause out of the three pieces, made everything personal, je was all over the place, used conditional and future in the last one a lot, made sure to use some common phrases about feelings/reactions etc in the journal intime, and I'm pretty sure I made very few grammatical mistakes and stayed very relevant to the topic. Clearer? Thanks for the opinion btw :)

Well done to everyone today. Just a word of advice-its better not to try to predict how many marks will be awarded or deducted for any given question, especially in the aural. The marking scheme will be decided upon in Athlone over a two day period next week and until then I'm afraid no-one, even the most experienced teacher or examiner, can tell you where marks will be lost or gained. It is probably better now to concentrate on the remaining exams.

Hmmm, if I get lucky, a B3 is not out of the question. Absolutely must be a C3. Really happy if I get a B3. Don't think I've gotten over 50 since 5th yr, so to peak today was quite fortunate! :D handy paper helped a bit aswell I suppose!

Did anybody else go way over the given 'word count' in the written pieces. I wrote about 150 words for each question and am just wondering if that's perhaps too much? My own teacher said to not go over the 90 words but he's a bit of an idiot and I did hear from that teacher on 2fm to write as much as you can? Anyone know?

my grinds teacher told be to stick to 90 and 75.
my teacher at school said to write more.
I listed to my grinds teacher because my teacher at school crazy!

Every teacher seems to say a different one on that, my own teacher just said stick to around 90 or 75 words, while a few grinds teachers that people have had in my year said to always write more, about 120 and 100 words.

The way i see it, if you write loads over 90 or 75 words, you have more chances of being marked down because theres more to correct.

my teacher is French and she says write what's asked it's enough.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,362 ✭✭✭K4t

hmmm I don't think i ahd many mistakes though so I should be alright. The advice on 2fm from a 'top' french teacher was to write over 120 words for the higher grades. We'll see.

  • Registered Users Posts: 240 ✭✭robz18

You definitely don't lose marks for writing too much. You'll just have more opportunities to make mistakes I guess.

My German teacher, who's a senior French examiner, told us that when they're being shown answers by students and asked to rate them the top ones are always quite long (well longer than the stated word count anyway). Sometimes examiners are like "oh this ones a bit short" then my teacher counts the words and it usually ends up being the word length stated.

I know it's not French, but in German you're told EXACTLY what to say, so when all the tasks are fulfilled I find I've gone way over.
