I'm gonna start this up soon guys. I've been out of action for quite a while because of a sporting injury (collapsed lung for a second time last April) and had a serious enough operation at the start of October. Was told that i'm good to go as of new year!

Just bought some scales over the last few days and sweet jesus did I pile on the pounds! Normally I play soccer, 1 game a week on top of 2 good training sessions. I would also train once or twice myself in the week.

Height is 187cm. My 'fit' weight would be in or around the 185-188lbs. I'm currently 205!! Put up almost 20lbs in the last 8 months. Put on a lot of bf. So i'm not gonna fool myself and start now as it is christmas n all, so training and diet will (hopefully) kick in on Jan 1st. Can't wait to get back to being fit again as my sleep pattern is horrific. Averaging about 5-5 1/2 hours a night! Mood is up and down, and generally feel nowhere near as good as I would have at peak fitness. Will post again at the end of this month to get started.

Good stuff Fizman - best of luck with it! January is a good month to start, not a whole lot going on and easy to keep the head down and get stuck into some training

well i have jsut finished week 7 of the couch to 5km program routine has been a little disrupted by the christmas season but all in all am still getting 3-4 sessions in a week so happy with that. Have spent the last 8 weeks or so building up my base fitness and strenght so will be time for a shift in the new year!

I've lost all momentum in my fitness campaign, due to exams, laziness, a sweet-tooth and bad weather. A bad combination!

I think I'll have to write down a list of specific goals to make this work. At least I know I had been making progress, so I know what I can do that works well for me.

The New Year starts here :D

My immediate goal is to get my waist down to 33 inches. When I get to this I'll start trying to gain weight.

    Waist - 38.6 :o I blame Christmas
    Chest -42.5
    Weight - 92.5kg

Once I get the waist down I'll feel like God again so I'll start eating enough to get my three lifts up. By the end of the year I'd be delighted with:
    Bench - 110kg
    Deadlift - 170kg
    Squat - 130kg

My only problem is I hurt my back over the holidays and I've been taking Difene for the last 10 or so days. But I'm pretty sure my back will be okay in a few weeks. I'll be jogging outside until it gets better... then back to weights.

Oh and I want to get my waist to 35.5 by the 10 of February. :pac:

Now thats a goal, kick arse dude. I hear ya about the waist thing and personally I blame it on the mince pies. My diet over the xmas consisted of protein shake or chicken and 2-3 mince pies. I am walking around the shops like a zoombie looking for the last of the mince pies:)

Like you I have my plan set out for the next 6 or so months and its envolves blood sweat and tears but bring it on. How is the back? I have a little niggle in my elbow so I have taken the last 5 days off just to give joints etc a break, back to it tomorrow and I cant wait. :D

Ok. I'm in and ready to give it socks!

I'm 24, male, 5ft 11 and 12 stone. I've lost over 4 stone since Nov 07 through 5 a side, running and weights. Over the last few months though my progress has slowed down somewhat and have been hoverng around the 12stone mark for a few months (although i'm still losing some weight and adding muscle).

    My goals are:

    1. Shift that last bit of weight and for the first time in my life get a flat stomach (i'll worry about a 6 pack next year!).

    2. Bring up my big three lifts and add on some muscle to replace the fat (i want to break body weight in the squat by the end of jan, dead lift by the end of feb and bench press by the end of the summer).

    3. Run a half marathon by the end of summer.

I'd also like to try my hat at the dublin marathon, but not willing to commit to it just yet, i have to see how the above goes.

I reckon my biggest challenge will be diet. I need to stay away from biscuits and rocky bars with tea etc, which will be hard. Also, we all take turns cooking in the flat, and the lads seem to have a penchant for late night carbs - pasta and rice are the staples. So they'll be hard to avoid completely unless i break the cooking pact!

I'll post measurements tomorrow, if only to have something to measure against.

Im back on board, after a totally overindulging xmas !! Was also away so diet went out the window. Havent weighed myself since coming back yesterday but will do tommorrow morning in the gym. Need to start up a new log aswell. So today is the first day of my plan.!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,111 ✭✭✭joker77

I'm back training today - I've 2 weeks till I'm off on my belated summer hols - 3 weeks in Thailand - can't fecking wait!

If I can stop the grazing, cut down on the carbs, not drink, and get to the gym 5 days out of 7 for the next 2 weeks I think I'll have gotten rid of the few Christmas pounds.

When I get back from Thailand I'll be shaking up the training a good bit, not sure exactly what kind of training I'll be doing yet, but am already looking forward to getting stuck right back into it. Before that though, the beach is definitely calling.....

I'm back after christmas for a 10-pound challenge. That is, 10lbs in 4 weeks to bring me down to 183lbs. Gonna try to keep increasing the weights so i hopefully won't lose any strength. Easy!!

    Day 1 - going good!

Posted stats in a new log, something to motivate me and keep track of progress.

Also, i would like to take this opportunity to g'em for all the work she put into setting up the challenge. Its a fountain of wisdom, and it pushed me into committing myself to this!

    Thanks.

I just found out tonight that I have to do a fitness test on Saturday. Not good news!

Can anybody tell me if 42:50 is a good time for completing a 10 mile cycle?

It's all good news, but strange good news. In fact I'm not even sure if it's good news at all.

    Waist - 36.6
    Chest - 40.2
    Weight - 88.4kg

They're the measurements this morning. It's strange, I'm happy. But it's strange.

I've been eating roughly 250 - 300 grams of protein and 100 - 120 grams of fat for the last ten days. No carbs. 4L of water.

I've done feck all exercise. Since last Monday I've lifted weights twice (Monday and Wednesday).

I went out to nightclubs on Monday, Thursday and Friday. I took caffeine tablets instead of drinking. Pretty much non stop dancing for three hours each of these nights.

My sleeping pattern is messed up. I slept for about 13 - 14 hours last night.

    My back is better :D

My back wasn't better but it almost is, keepin' it easy.

I had a stomach bug, worst one of my life, getting sick everywhere
I was sick from the 22nd to the 27th, I couldn't eat on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th bar two or three slices of toast a day. Didn't eat much for the 25th either. Then I went on a binge of Maccy Ds, chicken rolls and pizza.

I was down to 85.9kg with a 35.9" waist during this, but then the eating unhealthy for a few days brought this up.

I'm gonna be counting my calories and I won't be eating carbs until the 9th of Feb when Rag Week (9th - 12th) at college starts and then back to counting again.

Anyway, measurements this morning (I ate a 16" pizza last night).

    Waist - 36.4"
    Chest - 40.9"
    Weight - 89.2kg

Plan to have <35.5" waist by the 8th.

Edit: Look at that, waist down, weight up, chest up, boo ya!

a month in and its not going too well

went on holidays for a week. have ended up doing lots of cardio and not much weights. so i've actually lost muscle mass and some weight. :(

must get back to the lifting

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 31,142 Mod ✭✭✭✭Insect Overlord

I'm still at the same weight as I was before Christmas, but my speed and fitness have increased dramatically over the last 4 weeks. Might do a few measurements later, but I'm happy right now so I'll probably just keep myself in blissful ignorance.

    Ok I'm in.
Maybe posting on this board, putting up my goals around my room etc will help me stay on track. I'll post measurements later.

I'm mostly going for an increase in fitness, bigger shoulders/arms and bring out the stomach muscles :D

    Onward!

Just got a bench there yesterday and tried it for the first time today. With the size of the weights and bar I have, the max I can get on it is 48kg. I did 3 reps of 44 this morning - I'm on my own and don't want to be risky.

I realise this isn't exactly a great rep max :P but whatever..its only about th 3rd time I've ever benched anything and so far its my record :D

    It's a start :)

have to say i've really picked things up the last few weeks

pecs much more defined, abs and obliques too.

bench, squat aren't improving much, but i'm only doing one weights workout a week due to other sporting commitments. along with one cardio and core work

started circuit training the other day and i flew through it so i'm doing something right

just want to make sure i'm eating enough.

I'm back in. Updating my log again :o

I'm feeling good, I've got that positive feeling, now that I've done of couple of weeks of regular training and healthy eating with limited alcohol. I'll put up measurements and goals on my fitness log tonight, keep forgetting to do it.

I suppose reading this thread would assist before I was about to make another thread like that typed underneath...

Pitty I missed this as it would have been in and around the time I started trying to shape up a little bit better.

I have fully read the first post and I have to say thank you for the amount of effort you have put in. I am very eager to get stuck in and will be reading your diet plan and excercise plan a little laterwhen I get more time to do so.

I didn't say it in my quoted post I was going to post below but I do cycle around an hour a day as well.

I hope I experience the benefits now...

Oh and have done my first wknd with no alcohol and I plan on doing so until the end of May. I spent 5 and a half weeks off it last August Sep and it is well worth the experience!!
    I need advice,
I am 24, 12.5 stone and 5'9/10 (not sure which one) am doing running all the time, weights as well but running and cross training mainly.

I have gone on a diet which I broke over the wknd but have remained good for the best part and so far in the past 3 weeks or so lost half stone.

I know running and doing the same thing over and over isn't right but other than that I don't know a lot really of getting into shape.

Should I wear shorts or track bottoms for instance while working out? Get heated up better etc, really I don't have a good routine to follow and would be keen on getting some advice from people.

    Hey again,
I wasn't great at updating my log, but regardless, I did well, improved my upper body a bit and lost 2 inches off my waist (I was aiming for 3).

Anyway I've mostly been doing running with 2 freeweights sessions and 5 a side football, so I'm planning on taking the running seriously and dropping the weights. I've got a half marathon  planned for September.

So you'll find me over on the running forum for now, but thanks to everyone who gave me encouragement and advice over the last year! And good luck.
    :)

Just came across this thread and i think ill give it a go! Aiming to lose about a stone over the 8 weeks, will be out of the country for work for the last 4 weeks so that should keep me out of the pub and out of trouble :p
good luck everyone else who's doing it!

Awful quiet around these parts lately! :P

Anyways, I posted last December about how I was gonna start in January. Now in a way, I did, but I've been far from consistent. Lets just say that the past 4 months i've been 'gradually' building my fitness. :pac:

Results are showing though. As of Jan 1st this year I was a record high of 207 lbs. I'm currently 195. By the end of June, I hope to be about 190-192, with with more muscle than the present. So a lot of work still to be done, but my temple is slowly returning! I'll probably start up a log soon too. One thing I am finding is that when I straighten out my diet, even for a week, the weight drops off with some exercise.

Easter derailed me though!! Along with the two weeks afer that. I reckon i'd be 190 now if it wasn't for all those eggs!!

i'm up to nearly 13 stone, from 11.5 last september. hurrah! squats, deadlifts, benches and pullups will do that to you. along with eating 5/6 times a day.

body fat is dropping since i stopped eating spuds... eating pasta instead. though find it hard to vary the meals. cutting down on bread and toast too!

doing a lot of training with a gaa team as well so that is covering cardio. concentrating on building up the legs and chest/back in the gym

    ^^I know what you mean

I've been getting better over the last 2 months or so. Added about and inch-inch and a half to biceps, and about 3-4 to my chest. Happy days!
