Just wondering is it an open draw now or is it seeded according to the scores?

Anyone know?

The County Matchplay took place at Larkspur Park on Sunday 6th July amid sunny spells and torrential downpours but this did not deter the course from playing and looking it’s immaculate best.
In the Senior, Steven O’Reilly (Hillview) took the first scalp when he defeated John O’Meara (Riverdale) by 4&3 in what was a very high quality match. Paul O’Brien (Lakeside) took out local favourite Brian Webster (Larkspur Park) by 2&1 in a titanic struggle. James Cleary (Hillview) who is having an indifferent season defeated the tenacious Sean Minogue (Riverdale) by 1 up. Arguably the tie of the round was between Noel Joyce (Hillview) & Davy Morrissey (Lakeside). Davy birdied the last 5 holes to take the game to tie holes but both players pitches to 3 feet on 18 have to be mentioned. Noel, eventually winning on the 38th in a spectacular match. The semi final game with Steven O’Reilly & Paul O’Brien was one to savour. O’Reilly turned 2 up where and he was still 2 up with 4 to play despite O’Brien 7 under for the first 14. O’Brien finished with aplomb when he birdied the last 4 to win the match on the very last hole. O’Reilly who is only 17 can take credit confidence from this game and is certainly a player for the future. The second semi final with Noel Joyce & James Cleary was also of a high standard. Noel raced into an early lead and James was battling hard to stay with his illustrious opponent. James birdied 5 in a row but it was all in vein as he only 1 hole. Joyce was playing very steady and eventually closed out the game 7&6.
The final began with Joyce winning the 2nd after Paul 3 putted but O’Brien birdied 3,4,5,6,7 & 9 but Joyce also got 5,7 &8 and so O’Brien was 2 up through 9. Paul then birdied 11&12 but Noel also got 12 but Noel made an uncharacteristic bogey on 13 to allow Paul to go 4 up. Paul then birdied 14,15,16,17 to go through 18 in very comfortable lead of 8up. O’Brien was relentless as he birdied the 6 out of the first 7 to close out the match on a score line of 12&11. In the final itself Paul was 17 under for the 25 holes that were played. For Noel, nothing went for him, he had 6 putts that hit the hole and came out in the first round and if they had fallen it could have been a different story. Still though, he can take heart from his other two games he played to reach the final as he played at a very high standard in both those games.

In the Intermediate section we saw some great games by raw young talent that is emerging through the county. Shane Hoare (Larkspur Park) had a titanic battle with Patrick Kennedy (Lakeside) where Shane emerged on the 38th. Celly Ryan (Larkspur Park) beat clubmate Mark O’Brien 4&3. Stephen Shoer (Riverdale) beat Davy Hallinan (Hillview) 5&4. Christopher Hickey (Larkspur Park) beat Tommy Kevin (Riverdale) 4&3. In the Semi Final’s Shane Hoare was up against the witty Celly Ryan but Shane’s youth and vigour was too much for Celly and Shane closed out the match 5&4. The second semi was the battle of the young guns when Stephen Shoer faced Christopher Hickey. Both players played a high standard game but Stephen is growing in stature throughout the year and the little experience he has gained proved invaluable. He went on to close out the game 4&3. The final was between Shane Hoare (17) and Stephen Shoer (16). They both set their stalls out early and didn’t give an inch. Shoer birdied 14,15,16 &17 to turn 4 up. Hoare in his defiance birdied 1st, 3rd & 4th to reduce the arrears to 1. Up stepped Shoer to birdie 6&7 to get back to 3up. Shane was to win the 9th to reduce it to 2 once again. On the 11th Shane was miss but Stephen sank his tricky 4 footer down the hill to get back to 3 up. Shane pitched big of the 12 (not the thing to do) and he took a bogey to go 4 down with 6 to play. Hoare though sank a tremendous putt on 13 to get it back to 3. Both players birdied 14, Shane chipping in and Stephen holding a great 5 footer. Down 15, Shane missed a tough 8 footer and Stephen had the chance to win but his putt agonisingly shaved the hole. Both players found 16 but Shane missed and sportingly picked up his players marker and congratulated his opponent. Stephen now joins the Senior ranks and it will be interesting to see how he copes with the new pressures that this will entail. Shane will learn from this defeat and it will make him a stronger player. Both players are very young and have talent in abundance and will be a great asset to Tipperary Pitch & Putt in the future.

The Junior because of lack of numbers due to various reasons had just a straight final between Paul Shoer (Riverdale) and Pat Guidera (Riverdale). This was to prove to be a very entertaining final as both players went for the coveted title. In the end it was the youthfulness of Paul that shone through when he defeated the evergreen Pat on a scoreline of 3&2. Incidentally it was a double with for the Shoer Household.

Larkspur Park and their grounds staff have to complimented at the way they presented their course. Although there were torrential downpours throughout the day, the course held up impeccably. There is no doubt when the All Ireland Inter County Championships are held there in early September it is going to be a real spectacle. A word of thanks also to the Co Board officials who ran the competition so diligently as usual

An open draw as far as I know for the Inters. It is also an "Open" draw for the seniors but I was told that there is an unofficial seeding so as to keep the likes of Ray, JJ etc apart at the early stages.

Thanks I was hoping it would be an open draw The seniors matchplay should be great, 16 top quality players! It'll be hard to pick a winner from that bunch as they all seem to be playing well!
