unfortunately this country is a real tight knit "who you know" closed shop...you can connect a lot of happening bands on the map to a contact (drinking/drugpartner in radio / tv / rip off promotion / ticket company) if you are outside the circle its verrrry difficult......
i saw one of the best bands of my life in thomas reads the other night... they were called "AORTAL" (i dont know them and never heard of them before that) i was blown away..it was sonic genius. But they are struggling due to no connections to said circle of twats...this situation is fact , anyone who argues with it is blind

nearly every band people have mentioned here are a joke by the way..."delorentos"? go listen to real post punk like gang of four and wake the f*** up!

That's prrrrretty much a load of bull****. You can think that, and cry because your band aren't making it, but if you have the goods people will start taking note. There are loads of outlets for new music that have nothing to do with who you know. Granted it helps if you have some credible people to recommend you, but anybody can book a venue, anybody can make posters, anybody can make a record, anybody can get it heard... if you can't see that then you're "blind".

You sir are talking out of your hole on this point!
Its depressingly difficult to get mainstream radio to take an interest and as such "getting heard" as you put it is a hell of alot more difficult than you might think.

well the guy's got his band played on phantom, it's obviously possible...

As the owner of a record label, I wouldn't be proclaiming such difficulties if I was you... you chaps are meant to have this lark in the bag.

Phantom is a perfect example... that ICon show plays loads of new Irish music, has bands in for sessions, does a demo of the week etc etc. That's a start.
Then there's Green&Live down in Limerick, I'm sure there are loads of similar shows. Launch a few tracks Dan Hegarty or Cormac Battle's way and they'll give you a play if you're any use.
Back to Phantom, and they play a load of new Irish content, and new bands are often on the top of their most played charts.

So sir, may I put it to you that YOU are talking out of your hole on this point. :pac:
I'm not talking from a theoretical standpoint here by the way, I've seen all this in action, so please do discuss my hole again. :p

And now some pac men... :pac::pac::pac:

Just cos a fella has a myspace page it doesnt make it so!
Iv helped put out a couple of cd's and Im helping out a couple of other bands behind the scene but thats a far cry from being a "record label".
That might seem confusing but its a hard one to explain in print to be honest.

Which brings me on to my main point.
Myself and yourself obviously have different definitions of what "getting heard" means.
My definition is mainstream radio during peaktime between 7am and 7pm.

Dont think for one second that that means Im knocking Phantom FM, Beat FM, dj's like Dan Hegearty or journalists like Mark Kavanagh.
These guys are the champions of new Irish music and every band Iv spoken to over the last couple of years cant say enough good things about thesesguys (and others like them).
But the simple fact remains that untill the bigboys take notice of you for most bands (there are some exceptions of course) its a long tough slog with precious little tangible reward other than the fact of knowing you at least tried.

This is just one persons opinion on "indie" by the way but as I said it all really depends on your definition of what getting out there and getting heard means.

As the owner of a record label, I wouldn't be proclaiming such difficulties if I was you... you chaps are meant to have this lark in the bag.

Really depends on how you define a record label, Manazo Records Ltd (sorry, can't see your sig while typing this) sounds like a company. Most of the record labels doing the ground work aren't the Universal/Sony types, who just have the cash to plough through the rest, and realistically anybody with some brains and the will can do an effective job of acting like a record label following the indie model.

My definition of getting heard is 2fm, Today FM, Spin FM, Phantom FM, Red FM, Midlands FM (I think that's what it's called?), Limerick FM etc etc etc.
Infact, my definition of getting heard is quite "as it says on the tin", if you get your songs heard then you get them heard.
I wouldn't be crying for FM104's peak times, sure all you get there is a rotation of the same ol chart music that's everywhere else. At least people who listen to Phantom FM are of the mindset that they like that kind of music and want to hear it. Alt/indie music is nearly wasted on the Rhianna masses these days, I wouldn't put those stations on some sort of pedestal.

I really don't know who these mythical big boys are tbh, write some good tunes and people will play you, simple as. Once you get into the smaller shows, if your music is good enough then it'll get taken up by bigger shows etc etc. I wouldn't try and compare a band with the likes of Justin Timberlake, cause until you sell that many albums and get that sort of publicity, you're never going to be on an hourly rotation, but that doesn't mean you're not getting heard.

I'm not sure how memorable the tunes are if he thinks he needs subliminal advertising to help him remember the name of his own band.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 404 ✭✭seanwhite20

haha crap you guy's found me out. you probably check my recent post's , never thought of that lol. hey don't be harsh for a little subliminal advertisment haha it work's sometimes!. dude it's ok not to like my band you either love us or hate us but im not gona run and cry in the corner.

Let's try n keep the peace here man or men/woman for that fact. Can a brother not get some love for his band right here haha. And in reply to the memorable part to our song's they're good song's , just cos they don;t have a metal structure with a million breakdowns n stuff does'nt mean it's not good.

but anyways keep the peace I don't wana start some **** on this.

    I'm a nice guy really!:)

Don't say there's no originality out there. I saw this great band in Dublin. They were doing a kind of revamp of old Country and Irish hits, except slowed down and with distorted vocals. One of the accordion players was off-key during Four Roads To Glenamaddy, and the crowd seemed quite repelled by the singer, but you had to give them marks for effort.

I can't remember what they were called. Tigress? Thai Grease? Something like that.

    Any other fans out there?

dunno about top 5's and all, but...

Boss Volenti's performance on Friday proved to me they're one of the best out there. Just a savage slice of the rock. My hearing in my left ear is still down by a good 40%

Rarely Seen Above Ground was supporting and i thought he was really good too. Heard some tribal drumming at the bar and thought to myself, 'ah jebus' but he wiped the smug music snobbish look off my face very quick.

One dude drumming and singing, with a backing band (him, im guessing) being projected on a sheet behind him. Worth checking.

Other irish bands im excited about include Television Room. Your man seems to have a ear for writing perfect pop tunes.

    My dinner's ready now, sweet.

Delorentos win for me, not just because of that great album of theirs, but mainly for their class live show.

However, in general I find the Irish music scene dismal at best.
It seems to be dominated with crap like The Blizzards and The Coronas (Not even a slice of lime could save them).

And before anyone thinks it, I do not just listen to the mainstream Irish bands- but it's 4am and they're dominating my brain.
The Immediate were also rather good, back in the day. Did you know Conor now plays with Cathy Davey?
    Yeah, probably.

They could all get together and do a gig for the recession - Self Aid 2?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 717 ✭✭✭Aspiration

chris_d, I was at that BV gig at Whelan's. They were unreal!! And Rob is very sound. Met him in The Globe a few weeks ago and he remembered me from a Cork gig a few months ago! And he reminds me of Jesse Hughes so that makes me like him a whole lot more too! I like nice people :)

    Boss Volenti
The Immediate (I know they no longer exist but still)
    Oppenheimer
    Rulers of the Planet
    Cowboy X

and others... but right now it's these 5.
