It doesn't matter who discovered it, it could have been an infant monkey with a set of fridge magnets, the fact is that it hasn't been proven or verified by any means at all, scientific or otherwise.

Maybe they will prove us all wrong at 6pm this evening but that would change civilization overnight in a way thats never done before. So I'm betting thats not going to happen. Its much more likely that they will make a mockery of the Irish science/R&D scene, thats whats boiling everyone's blood.

Interesting to read your thoughts bonkey. Science is indeed fallible, theories/laws or what have you are indeed replaced, improved, or debunked. But never in the manner this Steorn crowd are going about it methinks.

Irish technology claims energy breakthrough

McCarthy explained to Silicon Republic that Orbo technology works on the basis that occurrences in magnetic fields do not happen instantaneously, and are therefore not subject to time in the way that, say, gravity is.
This time variance allows the Orbo platform to generate and consistently produce power, going against the law of conservation of energy which states that energy cannot be created or destroyed.

And yes I think what is upsetting people more is the manner in which this has been conducted. There have been more outlandish claims in scientific journals which have either been;
a)debunked
b)accepted
with a lot less fuss than this.

For the record the idea behind publishing in a journal isn't to gain some sort of kudos amongst your peers. Its so that your experiments can be examined and reproduced to see if they hold up - thereby accepting the validity of your data.

Even then, we couldnt' say that it was absolutely right, only that it matched all observations we had made. We couldn't say with 100% certainty that it will hold true tomorrow, or that it holds true everywhere, only that it appears to hold true wherever we have tested it.

That's pretty much what I was trying to get across in my previous post.

I still however think it's massively unlikely that Steorn have managed to bring some radical, theory-changing science to the table. If the device works, then it may be something of a new branch of science, or an approach that wasn't thought of before.

daveirl does make a good point however about using the device. If it was such a revolutionary piece of technology, and it works, surely there'd be one in every home already.

Though it may be a matter of funding - the device requires more work and they can't secure any serious funding without scientific analysis and approval. I have a feeling though that it's a marketing stunt.

"Steorn? Weren't you the guys who almost came out with a free energy device?".

Ok so as far as i understand it their whole idea is to tap into the magnetosphere and draw energy from it, this wouldn't compromise any of the laws of thermodynamics. but, even if this is possible (which i don't think it is) the magnetosphere is what keeps our atmosphere glued to our planet and protects us from being roasted by radiation from the sun....

so wont that in essence kill off the planet?

i mean if it works, at first we wouldn't be using enough to be able to make an impact but once everyone starts using it it would siphon off the magnetosphere exposing us to huge bursts of radiation?

well first of all, i don't think that a bunch of knackers who probably still believe in magic from the docklands in D3 have created a dynamo that dishes out unlimited energy, and second yeah it does sound like the knackers watched too much enterprise without doing any actual science.
