Maybe they are jealous that it was engineers that discovered it and not scientists ;) Whatever happens, I find it hugely entertaining. Much better then Lost.

It doesn't matter who discovered it, it could have been an infant monkey with a set of fridge magnets, the fact is that it hasn't been proven or verified by any means at all, scientific or otherwise.

Maybe they will prove us all wrong at 6pm this evening but that would change civilization overnight in a way thats never done before. So I'm betting thats not going to happen. Its much more likely that they will make a mockery of the Irish science/R&D scene, thats whats boiling everyone's blood.

Interesting to read your thoughts bonkey. Science is indeed fallible, theories/laws or what have you are indeed replaced, improved, or debunked. But never in the manner this Steorn crowd are going about it methinks.

    More info coming in...

    Irish technology claims energy breakthrough

McCarthy explained to Silicon Republic that Orbo technology works on the basis that occurrences in magnetic fields do not happen instantaneously, and are therefore not subject to time in the way that, say, gravity is.
This time variance allows the Orbo platform to generate and consistently produce power, going against the law of conservation of energy which states that energy cannot be created or destroyed.

McCarthy said in order to ensure complete transparency, the self-rotating wheel will be housed in clear plastic, allowing members of the public to “inspect it for a hidden battery”.

The Orbo will also be viewable live on the internet from 6pm this evening at www.steorn.com/orbo/demo /note: not working yet/, with four webcams focused on the machine 24 hours a day.

“It’s too good to be true but it is true,” said McCarthy, “It will have such an impact on everything we do. The only analogy I can give is if you had absolute proof that God wasn’t real.”

^^ quite a bold quote some may argue!

Ah I was going to attack bonkey as well. That is until the excellent explanation in post #60 cleared up the confusion in my muddled head.:o

    And yes I think what is upsetting people more is the manner in which this has been conducted. There have been more outlandish claims in scientific journals which have either been;
    a)debunked
    b)accepted
with a lot less fuss than this.

For the record the idea behind publishing in a journal isn't to gain some sort of kudos amongst your peers. Its so that your experiments can be examined and reproduced to see if they hold up - thereby accepting the validity of your data.

    That's the only analogy?!

    C'mon now Sean, c'mon....

This whole fiasco is nearly a year old... hopefully this "demo" will put an end to it.

I assume god = Laws of Thermodynamics, but yeah its a bad quote and could be taken up by the nut jobs.

Could have one of those new wireless power sources.

I think we past that at this stage. The nut jobs are running the "experiment"

    Reported there too.

""Obviously Steorn and Sean McCarthy would never recover if there is a negative result here. But we don't see that as even an outside possibility," he said."

Even then, we couldnt' say that it was absolutely right, only that it matched all observations we had made. We couldn't say with 100% certainty that it will hold true tomorrow, or that it holds true everywhere, only that it appears to hold true wherever we have tested it.
That's pretty much what I was trying to get across in my previous post.

I still however think it's massively unlikely that Steorn have managed to bring some radical, theory-changing science to the table. If the device works, then it may be something of a new branch of science, or an approach that wasn't thought of before.

daveirl does make a good point however about using the device. If it was such a revolutionary piece of technology, and it works, surely there'd be one in every home already.

Though it may be a matter of funding - the device requires more work and they can't secure any serious funding without scientific analysis and approval. I have a feeling though that it's a marketing stunt.

"Steorn? Weren't you the guys who almost came out with a free energy device?".
"Ah, so you *have* heard of us! Can I interest you in lower electricity bills...?"

Who needs free energy when you can just get a free woman, makes sense to me!!!!

    Free energy!

Jaysus, and here's me payin' for energy all these years! :D:D:D

    ;)

I'm staying in work late so I can see this, plus I'm going to the cinema later and have nothing better to do til then. If anything this will be amusing for about 5 seconds.

Ok so as far as i understand it their whole idea is to tap into the magnetosphere and draw energy from it, this wouldn't compromise any of the laws of thermodynamics. but, even if this is possible (which i don't think it is) the magnetosphere is what keeps our atmosphere glued to our planet and protects us from being roasted by radiation from the sun....

so wont that in essence kill off the planet? i mean if it works, at first we wouldn't be using enough to be able to make an impact but once everyone starts using it it would siphon off the magnetosphere exposing us to huge bursts of radiation?

That sounds like something out of a cheesy sci-fi movie. :o

I just checked the front page of their website, it cunningly says 6pm eastern time (ET) thats about 11pm right??

    LMFAO

On the site it says 6pm eastern time........perhaps that means Eastern Time in the USA and we won't see it till 11.

well first of all, i don't think that a bunch of knackers who probably still believe in magic from the docklands in D3 have created a dynamo that dishes out unlimited energy, and second yeah it does sound like the knackers watched too much enterprise without doing any actual science.

    Yeh, that's it alright.

They don't stick to their Irish roots much, displaying times in US format and having their demonstation in London...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭thehomeofDob

That's cheap... they're Irish, doing the thing in London, and giving the time in american time zone.
