Phase 3 Surveys

Following the announcement of the Preferred Option in February 2025, the Project Liaison Officer has continued to engage with landowners and representatives across the scheme, and this process will continue for the coming months.

The Project Team would like to advise that, as we progress the project through Phase 3 – Design and Environmental Evaluation, we will be moving forward with a full suite of site surveys in the coming months, including but not limited to Environmental, Ground Investigation and Topographical Surveys.

Where necessary, the Project Team will be in contact with relevant landowners to arrange these surveys.

Am I the only person noticing a big increase in serious RTC's on the 52km section of the current N4 that has not been upgraded, in the past couple of years? There's seems to be a bad crash every few weeks with serious injuries or fatalities being mentioned more and more. It might be that I'm being biased and therefore noticing the reports/news stories more, because I have a vested interest in the upgrade of the N4 but I don't think that is fully the case.

Before the NDP in 2018, TII conducted research into the stretches of the national road network with the highest rates of head on collisions and the stretch between Mullingar and Rooskey was one of the top ones (Cork-Limerick, Ballincollig-Farranfore and Ardee-Emyvale were the other ones that came out on top).

With ever increasing volumes on the stretch it’s not surprising it’s quite noticeable

It's very congested with a constant flow of traffic, have no figures but the % of HGVs seems very high. Not uncommon to see 3 or 4 trucks bunched up together. It's a decent road in most parts but hate that section (narrow) between Longford and Edgeworthstown and those small villages in Westmeath are a pain

As the project advances through Phase 3 – Design and Environmental Evaluation, the Project Team would like to advise that Ground Investigation surveys are scheduled to commence in November 2025 and will continue into 2026. These surveys form part of a wider programme of site investigations being undertaken during Phase 3.
Irish Drilling Limited has now been appointed to deliver the Ground Investigation survey programme. The Project Liaison Team has been actively engaging with affected landowners to arrange access and provide further details on the planned survey activities.

It will be interesting to see if any of this will have a type 1 DC cross section. I've always thought it should be motorway up to the N4/N5 split but that's a pipe dream unfortunately.

i hadnt been in the N4 in a good while but i had to go to sligo a few weeks a go. I could not get over the volume of traffic and in particular HGVs. The surface is also starting to break up.

Yes, HGVs are very numerous on the N4 and as they are limited to 90 km/h, together with very limited safe overtaking opportunities, that's already a 10% increase in time spent travelling on the 100 km/h sections, however I have noticed that more often than not, it's usually private vehicles who cause most of the delays, with a speed below 80 km/h of the lead car in a long queue being not at all unusual.

it’s a frustrating road alright- there’s huge swathes of good hard shoulder that nervous nellies can easily pull over to let off traffic safety- it’s called being aware of traffic around you and courtesy to other drivers. Sadly they chose not to. I don’t get it myself, I wouldn’t want a mile of frustrated drivers up my arse for miles and miles

They have. The start-point of N5 will be moved onto the new road, and some the existing N4 will be redesignated as part of this new N5. There are two likely links, which I’ve coloured Green and Orange in the map below, depending on which junction is going to be designated as the start of N5.

My prediction is the orange link will be used. (The rest of N4 will become a regional road)
