Some very high cloud tops have stayed south for the last 2 hours. This picture not the most impressive. Hopefully a move north east coming soon

Are the lightning indicators on met.ie correct? Seems to be showing thousands of strikes, how long do they go back does anyone know?

Likely understating it if anything. There was new claps of thunder literally every 2 to 3 seconds as it passed close by here earlier.

Almost felt like a tornado hit here. Trees were going sideways. Hail

Wow… I wondered was it really as bad (as good?!) as all that. thanks!

View to my west, probably near Lanesborough. It's still developing but it looks like it'll become a storm shortly.

Development in the Celtic Sea - that probably has Waterford City as a target.

For those like me looking on with envy from the south of the country, a few sparks showing up now south of Waterford. Pathetic in comparison I know but shure look.

I'm happy for you up there btw after enduring all that pig muck!

Amazing convection to my west, towards Lanesborough. Photos taken 90 seconds apart.

Yeah I have my beady eyes on those for Wexford later, although I'm not expecting much action this far east. We'll see.

The thunderstorm warning has been extended to 6am tomorrow morning for Connaught.

Hopefully there is some night time activity, there was no lightning visible at all earlier as the storm was elevated.

somebody probably checked the radar in glasnevin and saw the purple white pixels over north Mayo, and asked in a really low energy tone “ what about upgrading Mayo to orange ?? Yeah suppose, whatever…

I think met eirrean are playing catch up with the thunderstorms and with this type of weather its hard to pin point it but they seem to have stalled some what or almost by the looks of it , just a train line of them , I think I'll just about Miss them here in carrick

Is that orange warning for what's currently happening in North Mayo?

The next band coming doesn't look potent, all the heat is gone.

The way it seems to be done here in Germany by the Deutsche Wetterdienst (DWD) is that they issue a thunderstorm watch, and then issue the warnings as the thunderstorms occur.

They're notoriously difficult to forecast, and if you start issuing orange warnings and getting events cancelled in large areas, there's going to be war when 90% of that area doesn't get a thunderstorm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,324 ✭✭✭squarecircles

yes, it’s just that they couldn’t be bothered to go into detail regarding where its occurring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,634 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Absolutely I couldn't agree more 💯 , very difficult to forecast, I think we may have to cover warnings by area instead of counties and also as you said Germany do issuing thunderstorm watches as well 😀

A little gap between two extremely active thunderstorm cells not long before they appeared to merge into the one thundery band over Mayo this afternoon. Picture above was taken at 16:58hrs looking in a WNW direction towards Nephin Mountain in the distance. My own location is 11kms east of Castlebar.

The thing that really struck me about this afternoon's thunderstorm actvity was the continuous rumbling of thunder for prolonged periods. The lightning seemed quite elevated and mainly appeared cloud to cloud.

The slow advancing weak cold front could spark off followed by the occluded front during the night hours. Quite a bit of Deep layer shear available overnight. Temperatures down somewhat tomorrow with the best being mid to high teens more towards the E , N, NE . With the Upper Low more over us and associated cold pool and the upper atmospheric dynamics in effect instability kicking off lots of showers and isolated thunderstorms a possibility just about anywhere, maybe peaking in the midlands, E, NE in the afternoon early evening but impossible to pin point.
