Can you be called for mobility before the two years is up in a Department? If you have passed probation and in your second year?

There's a "Check your Eligibility" section on the NSSO, until all five say "Yes", you aren't going anywhere.

I'm not eligible yet but I've placed myself on the list, am.i right in saying once I get high up pause it?

  • Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 2,446 Mod ✭✭✭✭Nigel Fairservice

Just pause it now. You'll still move up the list but just won't receive offers.

    OK didn't know that thanks

No need to pause it unless you don't actually want to move and want to just have options in the future.

You won't be offered unless you're eligible.

You can get to No1 when your still not eligible but once you hit your 2 years and once they have a vacancy - you can go fairly quick

hi all AO just put in for mobility 30-95 on the lists in selected depts etc just want to know is it a first called for first taken re offers ?

also if I accept and start is it that I cannot move for another 2 years on mobility (list or advert?) but could I go for an internal comp or a national comp I.e. an EO opportunity on PAS?

Thanks so much (sorry if these are very basic questions in really confused!)

I think I remember reading on the NSSO that you could realistically be offered anytime from 40 and below as you don't know if the people before you are eligible. (Had a coworker move to Foreign Affairs on mobility at no.37, EO)

Exactly, you won't be eligible to move for two years, but can still join the lists.

It wouldn't make sense to go for an EO Comp when you're already above it. I suppose an open HEO comp would be accessible, but again you're on that level anyway.

sorry yes HEO or HAO! Mistakenly typed, though these seem to be pretty elusive to get ?

Good to know re the lists and placing on them thank you!

does anyone know if AO mobility exists for regional locations? I’ve been number one on list for 5 years for regional area just wondering will it ever be called ?

  • Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 2,446 Mod ✭✭✭✭Nigel Fairservice

I wouldn't say there's many AO positions in regional locations. Our department has a few AOs but all are Dublin based. We have no regional AOs.

Is it just me or does there seem to be no mobility movement at all at the moment? I'm number 5 on a list for mobility since before Xmas and I've neither got a call nor has my number changed (for a Dublin headquarters for a department). I've also noticed my number hasn't changed on some secondary options I have either

With panels now in place for HEO and EO I suspect many Departments are taking from these at the moment rather than looking to mobility.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 959 ✭✭✭tgdaly

This is probably true, but I thought there was a rule that 1 in 6 moves had to be taken from mobility panels (at least at HEO grade as far as I was aware)

I noticed the same, no movement at all in last few months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭Poolbabe

I was thinking that myself. My mobility flew down till February and it's moved 4 since then and nothing in nearly a month

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,662 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

That's because every year each applicant has to renew their application. It happens in January.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭Poolbabe

Yes I know I've done that. It flew down from August 23 to Feb 25 over 146 places.

Yes its very possible. The number of AO positions regionally are increasing. Keep an eye on the advertisement based. I've seen Wexford, Offaly, I'm sure I saw Carlow and West Cork and I think the main point is make contact on the advertised mobility ones as if you have the goods, something can be worked out re anchor days and you might be able to nail the perfect hybrid job with some give and take.

If you're willing to retrain for Revenue AO (more exacting qualifications and competencies wise (though typically less able IMCO if the transfer direction is reversed), then many many regional opportunities open up. Limerick, Athlone, Nenagh, Galway, Cork and more. But expext to be managing staff (EO Auditors). Which I view rancidly, given the AO yellow pack pay path but, if one is seeking promotion, covers off that gap in the AO repertoire.

Mobility is rarely quick. Ignore the 5 years BUT be patient and eyes wide open for opportunities.

Edited to add that the AO Mobility map does not present a true picture. Heinous, I know. My advice to you is that if you know of Departments where policy roles exist down the country (subsumed by HEOs since the moratorium to the point that policy is now a competency on HEO competitions), then contact those LHRs directly and make them aware that you are keen to transfer and what your skillset is (and eligibility).

What can that entrain? An LHR and a requesting unit expanding the role ask to include AO and not just HEO. It can't hurt so send a succinct email to those LHRs for which you've applied to (and those you haven't as you've only gone by the mobility map and their full engagement with the mobility process (hint - make your own luck and ps very best of luck).

that’s great thanks a million for the detailed explanation , also it’s great to hear !

I’m not currently eligible but from when I applied in August until January I moved down quickly. Since then I have barely moved on any list. This is for HEO too so there must be a reason it is happening nationally

I'd say there's going to less AOs going forward, Revenue have stopped recruiting the grade directly and HEO open comps seemed to replace the AO IT comps too. There is no general AO open recruitment outside dublin.

(In my opinion)LHR will have no interest bar for transfers of their own staff(or good past staff), if your in another department you may aswell be on the moon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,639 ✭✭✭An Ri rua

There is of course general AO open recruitment outside Dublin. Defence are outside Dublin and they take AOs from the open panel. There's also been an AO position in Cork (Clonakilty IIRC?) and there are a handful of others.

Unless the unions agree to an open HEO competition for general stream, the service (DPENDR) will need the cheaper cost of AOs vs HEOs. And to abuse the AO role. FORSA continue to work on the AO issue and it will likely lead to a merger of the roles with some accommodation made for an Open HEO. Bit that's all a while off yet.

Recent PAS AO comps specify Dublin and Open HEO is being used to recruit for IT and Tax, and any other role that can be deemed specialised …CSO-data analysts etc.

Gen AOs were being used to fill gaps all over the country but not anymore, I know there's a few AO policy roles in various HQs but they'd have extremely low turnover(nowhere to transfer to and less promotion options in a given area)
