Are the successful applicants driving instructors in most cases?

Hi All, just wondering if anyone has done and heard back in relation to the driving tests that were held last week for the 2024 campaign?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,832 ✭✭✭Neilw

How did it go for you, did they ask many questions?

I thought it went well, but I suppose its hard to tell and to know what exactly they are looking for. They asked very minimal questions!

I did the online test early December 2024. Got email of sucess. Have interview coming up next week. Any tips? Please.
I found 2021 and 2022 batch very interactive and sharing their experiences generously. Wishing the same for this round in 2024.
is there anyone who just have B licence like me. Or is it the job for experienced trainer or tester? And I should quit and not waste my time.
Any successful candidate in past without experience?

    i have the same question?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8 wondering2483

Hi All, hope the interviews went well. I still have not heard anything in relation to the driving test result's. Hopefully will hear soon!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭carzony

    Hi,

I completed and passed the interview stage in December, took the driving test/assessment today.

Hard to say how it went as there was soo many different turns, roundabouts, lane ways ect.. The test lasted for exactly an hour and was much more comprehensive than the standard driving test.

I made a mess of the reverse around the corner maneuver but feel the rest of the test went very well.

hoping to get good news but they seem fairly strict.

the driving test seems a little ott considering having a driving license meets the requirement and that training is provided anyway.

Had interview mid-December. Didn't get it (Always find three panel interviews very intimidating, and I know I was extremely nervous, but they were all very sound, down to earth people)

If I have any tips for anyone going for the interview in future; it's this: don't waste your time preparing for the "standard interview" questions that Collins McNicholas include in their email correspondence, as they don't ask (Well, didn't ask me) any of that stuff. They will only ask you the questions related to the job which CmN send you via email.

One question that completely threw me, and one I didn't have an answer for was "Can you give me an example of a time when you were asked to do something in a previous job that was "nonstandard" - well I was absolutely floored. Mind went blank. Very odd question to ask, to be honest.

I hope everyone success, and I'll be back next recruitment time with hopefully a little more experience under my belt

Hopefully you will get good news soon. Did they mention when you might hear? I wonder how long more the tests are running for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,832 ✭✭✭Neilw

I phoned Collins a week ago, they mentioned they are slightly behind schedule due to bad weather. They are not releasing results of the driving assessment until all assessments are complete, they mentioned mid February.

The testers basically got out of the car at the hotel and told me the hr crowd would be in touch.

They must have to compare your driving test with your interview results? (speculating there) i can't see how they couldn't just tell you the results of the driving test on the day otherwise.

very long winded process so far anyway.

still no updates yet? wish they;d provide some clarification..

Done the interview in balinasloe.. Have to say I thought it went Ok, nice relaxed atmosphere and the panel interviewing seemed to be lovely people and went through everything perfectly.. I suppose it's just a waiting game now to see how I got on..

Not heard anything at all since driving assessment/test. One of the testers did say on the day when they were getting out that CMN would be on touch in a few days but I would say that @Neilw 's comment above puts that in doubt.

Reading back over the various threads from days gone by and reading between the lines, they'll likely do some sort of scoring process based on the driving assessment faults and rank the candidates that way, i.e. it's possibly not necessarily an outright pass/fail scenario. Whether they'll even consider the theory test and interview scoring at this point, I don't know -possibly not. They will need to fill the panel with whatever number of candidates that they've allowed for there (maybe 140 candidates to fill the 70 posts as 100 unlikely to be enough but who knows?) and if they were doing strict pass/fail then it's possible that they could fall short. Even if a sufficient number of candidates do pass based on strict driving test faults then they'd still need to rank them before letting them know their panel position (which you seem to get informed of if successful). If they reach a point where they have enough candidates of sufficient competency for the panel then they might start letting the ones who did worst know (i.e. the ones who definitely won't make it). Due to the area selection that was part of the application process, they may have to take that into account so that they have at least one or two candidates for roles in the least popular/populated test centers. That's all just pure speculation based on what's gone on before.

I thought it was a tough enough test given the lack of local knowledge. I was surprised how big Mullingar was with big variation in types of roads, junctions, roundabouts, etc. I would have struggled to find my way back to the starting point on my own if they asked me to do so at any point in the test 🙂 Everyone's going to have made at least some mistakes though (whether they realised it or not) but I feel that it'll all depend on what mistakes one did make and how well/badly everyone else did. It also depends what they are really looking out for - is it sound fundamentals and execution or just pure driving tests faults or some combination? Real lap of the gods stuff! I know (for me anyway) that it has been a big investment of preparation, time, money and travel to get this far so it'll be a tough old wait if there's going to be another 3-4 weeks to find out the end result. Best of luck to all in any case.

I feel they could be more transparent in relation to the process and how it actually works and what they actually require.

All this waiting around is head wrecking.

The driving assessment was a bit of an unfair stage as many have not taken a driving test in many years, plus training is provided so you'll be trained on how to carry out these assessments yourself anyway.

Overall commitment to the process should also be taking into account. Many applicants including myself had very long journeys for the interview and then the driving assessment.

I tried calling the HR crowd but all you get is an answering machine 🥺

I believe that they discontinued the specific phone number for the process after the theory tests so you should use the "drivertesters" email address instead if you have any questions.

I would view the driving assessment as just another way to rank/discard people. There's no use in someone scoring 100% in the theory and interview if they haven't got the basic fundamentals of "driving to the test". I know for myself it was a long time since I did the test and had decades of "non-test" habits to try and undo (not necessarily bad habits but certainly not as things would be done in the test). It is the same test for everyone but ADIs and people familiar with Mullingar will probably have a little bit of an advantage at this stage (though they still need to perform under pressure on the day).

The travel etc. was a little bit of effort alright but I guess that they're trying to make it as "same for everyone" as possible, keep it fair, eliminate local knowledge/pull for most and possibly lose those not as committed to the process along the way.

The waiting is indeed hard though. I've put a lot into this process - probably multiples more than for any other job I've gone for in the past- and I just want to know now whether it's all been enough or whether to start mentally moving on (and I'll be gutted if I have to). Just have to find a way of thinking about it less for the next month or so - there alas doesn't seem to be any other option.

same here, it's the first job in years i'd really love to be offered.

The HR crowd actually called me back today but had no specific information to share with me, only that they would be notifying people around the middle of feb.

I heard that 1,000 people applied but that's hearsay

Did interview today and passed, have the test in Mullingar next week, do you use your own car or do they provide one? Did you dress again in business attire for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 381 ✭✭pandabat

They will send you all the necessary information about the car and the test in an email. Read it carefully.

Dress as you would for a normal driving test. If you want to dress a little smarter then that's up to you but I wouldn't say that it's necessary.

I'll be counting the days down until mid feb

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,832 ✭✭✭Neilw

Needs to be a manual car with 4 doors, make sure it’s fully legal, insurance, tax and NCT if required as they do check.
