Well that was humiliating, came out of the house and a km down the road there was debris on the road. I stopped to clear the road, and then a neighbour came round the corner when I was near done, I hopped up on the pavement and my foot went from under me. From her perspective I just walked off the road and fell over for no reason. . Nice gash on the elbow from it

Off this morning joining the N11 from Willow Grove - bottom of the road was lethal and by the time I spotted it too late. Elbow bore the brunt, with some nice road rash. N11 hard shoulder was pretty sketchy the whole way up - should've gone on the wimp list...

Almost came a cropper yesterday on a roundabout, not leaning excessively as it looked greasy, my back wheel kicked out , felt like a foot or more but gripped again. Not a nice feeling but ever so relieved when it gripped again.

Hopefully there's no concussion or anything, Weepsie.

About a year ago. Going around a bend in good weather. Suspect I skidded on oil. Was on the ground before I knew what happened. Nothing broke except my watch. Before that it was always ice that got me.

You poor thing! Fingers crossed you're alright. That sounds like a bit of a shock.

I also cycled in today and realised the error of my ways about half way in the middle of a blizzard. Really bad stuff. Slipped a couple of times but didn't come off luckily.

First race Saturday & first get down though not the usual way.

I was doing a 20min warm up on a set of rollers of which I’ve used about 8 times when something caught my eye & I hit the deck. Pure embarrassing but what can you do only laugh.

Took a spill right at the start of the ride tonight.

Think the valve core must've been not quite tight or something. I was in a hurry to get out tonight, so never checked tyre pressure. Front tyre must've been very soft, first bend coming out of the estate, and the bead unseated completely from the tyre (tubeless setup).

Went down like a sack of shïte...

Had a very tiny bit of 'play' in the headset. Usual routine of taking of the all allen bolts, checking things, the saga that is making sure the front wheel is perfectly straight with respect to the frame. Put the headset nut back in, took it for a VERY short ride and was flung onto the tarmac soon afterwards. I forgot to put back in allen bolts on the either side of the handleset, thus steering was impossible. Zero friction to push against.

Hit the ground pretty hard on an already badly injured knee (from years ago). Was only traveling at only a few kmph but was not able to correct things in time - no helmet on etc. Who wears a helmet in their backyard? - I'm otherwise pretty strict about such things.

Got up and my knee felt unstable from the back of my leg. Swelled up pretty bad and was limping for at least 2 weeks. Average walking speed was down to about 3 kmph. Had to home office for a while (the best thing that came of it).

My walking speed, stability, double-support time only recently back to what they were prior to the fall - not a quick recovery. Back to same average speed on my bike as well.

Forgot I had an exercise mat sticking out of the rear pannier when I was getting off the bike. Caught my leg on it and went on my arse. No audience, fortunately.

A few years back I was on a cycling holiday with herself. One of those touring bikes with a larger fame and a far higher saddle than the one I am used on to (a 59 cm road bike). Out in the middle of nowhere, unfamiliar with the location. Stopped for a little while with the intention of checking Google maps. Thinking it was solid ground I was putting my foot onto, I fell sideways a drainage ditch, landing on my chest. A few light grazes on my legs from the brambles - the bike may have take a slight knock as well. She had no idea where I had vanished to but did an about turn and we were re-united. Was able to get back on my feet relatively soon afterwards, but I knew something was not right. She returned both bikes to the local bikeshop (so that we could conceal any evidence of a fall/crash).

Not much hassle for the few remaining days of the holiday, but when I got back to where I live these times, I was absolutly banjaxed (may have been the flight). Getting in and out of bed nearly brought tears to my eyes - visible bruises on my chest. About one week to be fit and well again.

Very busy x junction, 4 lollipop men, lots of yellow machinery and high vis shovel carriers. Cycled down off a footpath to cross the road, didn't see the 150mm ridge in the middle of the road.

Over and down at 5 kph or less. Blushed cause I was with a buddy I've taken under my wing to 'show him the ropes'!

hit the deck at the weekend. Stopped at a junction - 90% sure I had clipped out but somehow my foot was still attached to the pedal, so down I went. Knee is a bit grazed, but my hands took most of the impact and they're still really sore. And of course I felt like an idiot.

The humiliation reached a peak yesterday morning. Rolled up to the front door of work and my shoulder locked/siezed. Couldn't take my hand off the handlebar, couldn't turn. In my attempt to twist my body, I ended up slamming myself into the ground, on my already injured shoulder.

    I do indeed hate mondays.

Hit the ground this morning on commute. Back wheel slid sideways when I squeezed the breaks. Wet conditions were the main factor for it happening. Skinned knee and hand and bruised ego. Could be worse

Mental note not to use a bike this time next year.

Took a nasty wallop this morning in the pissing and driving rain of my own doing. North Dublin quays and traffic was moving so couldn't transverse across to the bike lane before the four courts so continued down the bus lane with a wanker in a red Audi following and beeping. Car in outside lane again at the next junction so onwards and having overtaken a bus was conscious of a car close behind. Had a look and thought the kerbing had ended sooner so decided to move over to the cycle lane but hit the deck before I knew what happened. I've a 1500 lumen front light but in the rain the kerbing looked indistinguishable (where's the high vis for those). A crossing pedestrian enquired as my condition but thankfully nothing broken, hip and forearm took the impact so plenty of road rash/bruising through the clothing which remarkable didn't tear.

Annoyed with myself as traffic/cars typically don't phase me so not sure why I didn't wait another few meters for the actual junction. The yellow box kind of discouraged me as never pleasant crossing heavily painted road in very wet conditions given the risk of loosing traction. Been 3 years since I last came off the bike and that was in black ice at the Wellington Rd roundabout in the Phoenix Park. Been a very unpleasant few weeks on the bike and this morning really topped it off and soaked again on the commute home.

Ouch. Sorry to see and hear that. Bike ok? Sounded a little squeaky afterwards.

The Audi and then the Mazda (?) weren't exactly helping matters - yet I'd say they had no fupping clue they were part of the wider orbit of your incident, other than "get out of the way".

Great ad for the Cycliq rear light & camera though. I say every year I must get one.

Bit of a tumble today. Downhill, in the woods, hit a patch of wet leaves on top of mud.

You can see where I hit, and where the bike stopped.

Did you need to be hosed down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭PixelCrafter

I did it a few times in my first weeks of cycling and decided I might be better off walking lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,851 ✭✭✭cletus

Well, I would have, if there was a hose. Mud was dry by the time I got home 😀

Ouch. It's one of the reasons I'm wary of the overly engineered segregated cycle lanes. Yes, they're intended to clearly delineate "don't drive here", but in reality they pose a risk to cyclists who, for whatever reason, veer too close to the physical barriers. The fear of clipping one and being thrown into the motoring lane is always at the back of my mind.

I hate that section. Trying to pick the right time to get over to the other side can be tricky as well, as if the lights ahead are green, you've got drivers putting the foot down to get through it (what 30km limit??).
