My gym has only 2 assault bikes and endless amount of spin bikes.and those Seated bikes.

This morning , 2 lads sat on the assault bike for 30 min, chatting, on their phones and generally using the bikes at an ultra leisurely pace - nothing that couldn't be done on a regular, everyday run-of-the-mill spin bike.

After several minutes of tutting and sighing heavily, they eventually got the message.

To reminded you how out of shape you really are.

Good way to add high intensity cardio in short bursts in between sets when lifting.

Spin classes in middle of gym with music that is insanely deafening. wtf is that sbout?

Small gym, some random guy came up to me when I was using the leg press, and told me I should try locking out my knees because "you actually make you use more of your leg and build muscle better".

Yes, random stranger, of course I should do that. Especially with my hypermobility and weights heavier than myself... that will end really well.

Similar to a concept2 or other Erg machine. There is no resistance setting, the resistance is provided by air and increases with your speed. This allows allows for consistency and comparability across machines as the resistance is direct measurement. If we both do 1km, or 50cal or whatever on two different bikes. We can directly compare performance (or one person over time)

Where as spin bike and exercises bikes have a resistance setting that works more like a gear/resistance setting. Allow heavy resistance low cadence, or light resistance with high cadence. Downside that it is much more prone to variation from wear. And not always a direct measurement - although modern bikes are probably measuring watts rather than analogue resistance.

Wow, terrible advice from the randomer there, especially if going heavy. Most unsolicited advice is harmless, but not that little nugget.

Thankfully he didn't push the matter but I felt like drawing him a graphic diagram of what would happen if I did what he suggested...

My gym is busy even when it shouldn't be busy due to idiots sitting on equipment on there phones scrolling doing a set every 7-8 minutes, it's starting to cause friction to be honest, seems to be a general z thing or foreign lads, can be frustrating as hell

    Picture the scene:

    • lots of squatting racks, the ones with the arrays of holders at the sides that store/hang-up the weight plates, lots of plates on the holders
    • me doing barbell squats at one of the racks

Me: [on the phone resting, waiting for my rest time to elapse]

Someone: Eh, can I take that 15? [points to the 15kg plate hanging up on one of the holders on my rack]

Me: [bewildered, wanting to say "I don't fcuking own them and I'm obviously not using them coz they're not on the ends of my bar, so yeah, take whatever you want"] Eh yeah, sure, go ahead.

    Someone: Oh great, thanks.

    Me: [WTF]

was in a Flyefit last night. Absolutely rammed. Some lad took another lads bench and there was a screaming match. The lad who lost the bench went to get the manager and the manager wouldn't do anything

he should plan the exact same scenario for next week but cover his hands in **** and them let the lad rob the bench. Nice surprise when he grips the bar.

Basic manners to ask the question.

Have you recovered from being treated with respect yet?

It has nothing to do with manners. All equipment is fair game for anyone to use provided it's not being used. There is no need to ask to use something that's not being used. Are you not long around?

nah, you’re in the wrong here…another gym goer shows basic manners asking if they can take the weight that’s at your station, and somehow they’re the problem.

    I don’t get it

If a plate is on a rack someone is using its common courtesy to ask that person if they're using it before you take it.

I'm training a long time thanks chief.

This thread is about annoying gym behaviour, not polite gym behaviour.

What are people's thoughts on videoing at the gym, hadn't seen it before, was out of the gym for 6 weeks and first time back there was two tripods from two different people filing their workouts, with half the gym in the background - found it very off-putting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,776 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

this is a growing phenomenon at mine. Despite signage everywhere saying phone use is only for listening to music with headphones…..People sat on equipment, not using the equipment while messaging, people sat on equipment while having a conversation with the mate at the neighbouring piece of equipment while waiting them to finish using it and I’ve even seen the odd person take or make phone calls…common enough on the standard exercise bikes.

it’s only been very noticeable after being back post covid. There is zero enforcement though…

Not allowed on the gym I go to and the owner has told me he will terminate membership for anyone doing it.
I wouldn’t like to be seen in someone’s video.
Nobody can know how light I lift 😝

    Wow, what a weirdo!

The guy that politely asked you if the 15KG was free seems pretty cool though.

    A definite no go.

I've heard about young lads videoing themselves in the changing rooms in my gym, fathers with kids getting changed have had to have a go at them over it.

Whether it's that extreme or setting up a tripod on the gym floor, it shows a lack of consideration for other members. Gyms are shared spaces and you can't expect everyone to be thrilled at the prospect of being caught in your cameras field of view. That's before you get onto some of the nonsense you see online with people taking offence to other gym users while filming etc.

If you're working with an online coach, it's necessary for getting feedback. There are ways of doing it that minimise putting other gym-goers in the frame.

People recording for some kind of vlog in a way that's ignorant to the shared space is a different thing altogether though.

if it’s for Instagram or similar then you and your camera should be fcuked out the door. A growing trend in America atm is videos of people recording their workouts and some randomer innocently walks into the picture. Then the blogger gets pissed off and shamed the innocent person on their page. Ridiculous stuff.

If you scroll back on these pages you’ll actually find people giving out about guys walking up to their rack and removing plates without asking. Some folks just can’t win. You should be glad you workout in a gym where people have manners. I’d say your attitude you made that lad feel terrible for simply having manners.
