First of all ... you do not have the right to tell anyone to stop posting ... secondly it does not matter what he wrote or didn't ... looked it up briefly and saw the other fella that wrote Ted wrote Val Falvey ... I am not very interested in these people outside of what they originally were famous for and do not put them up on a pedestal ... indeed my very point is these guys are not that important and should stick to writing their comedies ... I watch Father Ted on occasion and it is quite good but I do not want to hear the writers' political and social opinions ... simple as ...

I don't mind authors and creators sharing their political views. I used to love the band Muse and I was happy to go to their shows even though Matt Bellamy is big into his conspiracy theories. I'm watching Frasier at the moment even though Kelsey Grammer is a full on Trumpster.

Linehan isn't airing his views, he's actively forcing them on people and terrorising them when they don't agree.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

Should I just take your word on that or are you gonna post examples? While I think he's beyond saving in terms of arguing with morons online I do for the most part agree with him.

    But go on.

That’s it , I’m sure at the start he thought he was protecting the women in his life, but it all looks foolish when they have enough and leave

Nobody watches Fr Ted because of any like / love of Graham Linehan…. Nobody will even think of the man from the first scene till last of an episode..

They watch it because they find it funny and enjoy it….nobody even thinks of Linehan sitting down to watch it, nobody thinks about his views on trans people. Nobody really cares about him…he said some stuff….. you can agree with him, disagree with him, be non plussed, be angry, be offended or not give two shîts and not care at all….

it’s not harassment…. Harassment is something in the eyes of the law that is targeted and repeated…. Abuse ? Hate mongering ? You can’t harass a whole cohort of people. I can’t harass Liverpool fans, civil servants, Primark employees, gay people by virtue of a comment or two I’d make… cohorts of the above people may be disappointed, angry, offended by the comments but harassment it ain’t.

Look at Steptoe and Son…. A harmless old bawdy sit-com… replayed on Gold, BBC….well written, brilliantly acted and obviously very funny..

    yet…

in the 37 years since the series ended, it was never cancelled, I don’t recall ever a petition claiming it should be..

yet, a whole sitcom Fr Ted is being advocated to get cancelled as one of the writers said controversial stuff.

another sitcom and it’s main star was a pedophile, but nobody bats an eyelid…. 👀 still on Gold, they have a huge section on their website bigging it up….guess what, so does the BBC… no outrage or mass distain….

You've been told this multiple times, nobody is calling for Fr Ted to be taken off the air. So basically you latched onto a click bait title where a poster is attempting to manufacture a scandal.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

My contribution to the thread is based not simply on what just the OP said… there are many other contributors and posts. I doubt a post on boards can manufacture a scandal, it can certainly manufacture debate, I’ve no issues with that :)

A quick Google indicates that there's no campaign to remove Fr Ted from TV....

Yep I have not come across one single person on this thread or anywhere else advocating that in earnest.

What on earth on you about? Who said harassment can only have a legal definition. There are plenty of examples of his behaviour of harassment, abuse and hatemongering. He has harassed many individuals. He has made many many hateful transphobic comments. Your suggestion about only or two comments is frankly absurd.

Nobody advocated cancelling Fr Ted at all. You made that up.

I think you're confused about what the scandal is - it's nothing to do with Fr Ted. You fell for the clickbait thread title.

This I know, but if Linehan gets canceled, I was using Ted as an example

Linehan's views were held by everyone till about 8 years ago. There is nothing controversial about them. He has clearly obsessed and hurt his life but he is right. I would urge anyone doubting this to actually dig out the alleged offensive tweets or the JK Rowling ones. See for yourself.

    An example of what?

Something that hasn't happened and that no one has looked for?

When you consider the vile thrown at the likes of Germaine Greer and Kathleen stock, linehan actually gets off quite lightly. He is still able to make programs like the recent excellent Motherland.

    Based on what?

Plenty of examples of his nonsense on this thread show him for what he is.

Well why did you claim in the thread there was advocacy to cancel Fr Ted then?

No. Everyone wasn't going around harassing and abusing trans people until 8 years ago. Everyone wasn't ranting about trans people being evil and gromers and paedophiles until 8 years ago.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? I'm not sure I would have had an opinion on trans people 8 years ago. I never even knew a trans person until about 6 years ago. I certainly didn't associate them with paedos. I lived through assuming homophobia and associating gays with paedos was normal and then having to realise I was totally wrong about that. So when the trans people came along, I'm pretty sure I had humility enough to not make the same mistake.

Maybe you associated trans people with paedos 8 years ago, but not everyone did.

I was in my late teens when I had to really evaluate my understanding of what being gay meant. I realised that sexual orientation (insert race, religion, social background) didn't really tell you either of the most important things about people: 1. It doesn't tell you whether they're sound or not and 2. Whether they could teach you something interesting.

Figuring out how wrong I was about sexual orientation was a humbling blow to the ego. I'll just judge people by their behaviour rather than one characteristic that doesn't tell you anything important about whether they're sound

Linehan has become a far more ridiculous figure in real life than any fictional character in Father Ted.

He has become a composite of the worst traits of many characters.

He has the self regard of that priest who wanted the two parachutes, the ego of Niamh Connolly, the hypocrisy of Bishop Brennan, the charm of Dick Byrne, the reasonableness of Fintan Stack, the honesty of Father Damo Lennon, the stability of Henry Sellers, and the believability of Ted spinning that yarn about the whistle.

At the end of it all he's about as interesting as Father Stone.

And his followers are a shower of Cyril McDuffs.

You're essentially just screaming and you've yet to post anything the man's said to back up your argument.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,714 ✭✭✭Yellow_Fern

Yeah you I don't know where you get this but that is a distraction. Linehan doesn't think that. That is not where this controversary came from. . Linehan has said very clearly he doesnt think that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,136 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Well, he's also been pretty clear about associating trans and paedos.

    🤣🤣🤣

Lots of examples in the thread posted by me and others.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? 😅😅😅

Linehan has made numerous statements about trans people and paedophilia. He also claims he is not anti trans despite the fact his whole life is an anti trans obsession.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me?
