Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Please tell me this is a joke?

I haven’t been listening for a while before 6 due to work commitments but missed this completely. I am speechless.

What's the supposed difference between The Last Word and The Hard Shoulder?

  • Registered Users Posts: 381 ✭✭Ballycommon Mast

The hard shoulder is meant to be a hard news program whereas The last word is more of a light entertainment/Magazine show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,823 ✭✭✭robo

Not sure if Matt would agree with that - he "prides" himself on asking the hard questions etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,654 ✭✭✭✭For Forks Sake

He hasn't asked a hard question in a decade. That shows credibility as news coverage has been hollowed out to non-existance at this stage

In fairness he did give Mick Barry a bit of a kicking yesterday about the Ukraine war.

Shooting fish in a barrel admittedly but someone has to pull the trigger.

he only grills Cal as he doesnt jump into the echo chamber coops and the other one does

I couldn't be arsed to listen back, but what was Barry's angle on it all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,080 ✭✭✭bigtimecharlie

I find this useful, I've often tuned in mid conversation and if an non regular expert is not renamed towards the end of the interview, you'd never know who you were listening to.

Doing it for regular contributors might be pointless, but it keeps it consistent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,782 ✭✭✭✭padd b1975

No money to be donated by the government to help Ukraine.

He had to be asked four times before he would admit that much.

Usual guff about how the money would end up going to big business as well.

I listened back. Guff and blather as usual. Everything must accord with a pre-conceived world view; nothing new ever upsets Mick's analysis - the goodies and baddies are never changing. Reincarnation of Joe Higgins.

Is the Cal & Marion gone? I don't catch the show live I just pick out podcast episodes and that weekly slot hasn't been showing up in a while.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,103 ✭✭✭rolling boh

no there are still on the show .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

Didn't think it possible to find a presenter with an even more reedy sounding voice than Matt but Ian Guider manages it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,969 ✭✭✭ShagNastii

Have gone back to Matt Cooper after some time this week. I think they has rowed back on covering "woke" topics.

The political discussion from Matt is almost of old. For about 4-5 years he has offered little more than scoffing at Trump, Boris and other misc. people. Real lowest common denominator stiff.

Roe McDermott was on the show twice this week and her contributions now are like day and night. Really considered, interesting observations. I know she got a slap on the wrist but she has lost the four or five chips she had on her shoulders and has mellowed out completely.

  • Registered Users Posts: 753 ✭✭✭denishurley

I think it says a lot about the current relevance of TLW that, despite everything going on with the world right now, this thread went three months without a comment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,225 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

The Last Word at least had the courage to cover the topic of trans athletes being banned from competing at elite level women's sport yesterday.

I imagine most shows would have run a mile from it in case they suffered the wrath of the same people who were so abhorred by recent Liveline discussions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,448 ✭✭✭JoeA3

More a reflection on boards.ie than anything else tbh. Loads of threads on this site that were once very active have completely flatlined in the last 12 months.

  • Registered Users Posts: 753 ✭✭✭denishurley

Well that's a fair point too, but other radio show threads remain busy

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,341 ✭✭✭✭Faugheen

The problem with the Liveline discussions was that people were peddling hurtful shite which has had trans people trying to figure out who they are were literally killing themselves over.

The discussions on The Last Word and Newstalk have been fair and a lot more considerate to the group of people that were completely alienated by Liveline.

Ian Guider in for Cooper today ,didn't think it possible to find someone with an even higher pitched voice than Matt but they managed it

    Awful voice for radio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,984 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Matt just signed off a piece there telling us that Roe McDermott is a relationship writer with XXXX and a movie critic with Hot Press.

How do you get qualified for those 2 jobs? Talk about making up careers. I suppose she has found 2 different organisations to pay her for doing these jobs, so gotta admire her.

The Cal and Marion slot is turning into such a car crash these days it’s a wonder it’s not put out to pasture.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,145 ✭✭✭Xander10

When I do tune in to the show , that is a section I always switch away from. It's so predictable like a " good cop bad cop " section. It just bores me these days.

Cal had an absolute mare. He needs to move aside. He was very bad when it came to Trump but had recovered but that was dire.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,386 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

At about 3 minutes to 6 Matt Cooper said that Leo is having a paramilitary party meeting in Kilkenny.

His delivery of basic sentences is awful too. He's like an AI version of Pat Kenny.

There was a very good podcast recently where he interviewed John Gibbons about on 10 myths climate change deniers argue, but it isn't appearing anymore on the list of podcasts. Funny!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,455 ✭✭✭Tork

When was this? There's an episode from October in my podcast app where he debunked climate change myths

  • Registered Users Posts: 79 ✭✭drserious4

I wish Matt was an honest broker and I didn't know his opinion on Trump, Boris Johnson, The protests in East Wall etc. But he has to tell you that he's soooo right on and on the right side of every argument.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,984 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

There certainly is no impartiality on the show. The host doesn't hide his bias.

  • Registered Users Posts: 402 ✭✭cal naughton

You can tell Matt hates the go loud cash machine. He completely goes through the motions calling it out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

Matt is the kind of sneaky little twerp who at school cosied up to whoever was the popular kid ( despite himself being terminally lame and uncool )and who got in a sneaky kick when some unfortunate kid was being group bullied , he also sucked up to all the teachers

    absolute Wally

Matt has seen what happened to George Hook and Kevin Myers amongst others. If he dares say anything that isn't politically correct he'll be hounded from his job. I also wonder what his research team are like. Are they a bunch of Jennifer Gannon clones?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,103 ✭✭✭rolling boh

I would think the budget for research is small enough judging by the content of the show I used to listen but got tired of Matt obsession with Trump and Boris neither of which I like but do not need Matt to keep going on about them .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,941 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

Good God. Haven't listened to this show in weeks, maybe months, but tuned in this evening on the way home from work for a change. Roe McDermott and some Lorcan Niyan (I think) fella on. Jesus I'm nearly convinced they have these guests on to troll the listener. At the very least to incite anger and frustration. Could you get two more right-on, liberal, politically correct, social justice warriors if you tried. I think Roe's modus operandi is to squeeze the word "racist" into as many sentences as is humanly possible.

Would it kill them to have a modicum of balance, impartiality? God forbid we might get an alternative voice. Absolutely pathetic. Back to Christmas FM for me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

the Lorcan guy is married to the journal.ie editor Sinead o Carroll

McDermot hasn’t an original home baked thought in her head

she’s a walking talking soundbite spewing WOKE bot , insufferable idiot

It's been a lot longer than a few months for The Last Word.

It's been poor for several years now. Up until about 2018 I was a regular daily listener.

    Rarely listen now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,984 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Heard the show today at 6pm, and the newsreader just read out the news, without Matt and him having to do the silly to and fro.

Tell me the 5@5 and 6@6 are no more!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

Is Roe McDermott still pontificating and man-hating on this show?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,984 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Haven't heard her in a couple of weeks. Wonder why, considering she was a firm favourite on the show with the man-hating angle brought into most subjects?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,506 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Obviously its oppression from the patriarchy silencing her, couldnt possibly be anything else that we can/can not talk about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 860 ✭✭✭amlinopta

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,132 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Roe is hilarious at this stage. An actual parody of herself at this point shes gotten so predictable. Every "review" is identical to the level that I don't think she even bothers trying to watch anything anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

Of course it’s predictable, she never had an original thought in her life , it’s just a rinse and repeat of WOKE soundbites from her progressive bible ( CIS , POC, , racist , transphobic , late stage capitalism etc ) sprinkled amongst every subject she comments on , they all fit

intensely boring mediocrity of a person

  • Registered Users Posts: 178 ✭✭tomglsn

Don’t forget problematic….another favourite of Roes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

Roe was a great one for the "I believe her" and "a woman must always be believed" comments.....but seems to not believe certain people. Intriguing, as a certain self-proclaimed leg breaker might say.
