I think what I'm getting at is they're all over the place, but if you're not friendly with the powers that be you'll find out how quickly the law suddenly applies. I can't think of any centrefire revolvers I've seen but I've seen quite a few rifles that would be restricted calibre up for auction. O' Cuiv is never going to get in trouble because of who he is, regardless of what the firearm is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 553 ✭✭✭Munsterlad102

Yep, I’ve seen a good few deacts get sold at auction and I can guarantee that no one had a Garda authorisation for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,507 ✭✭✭✭kowloon

Kind of related: where does a revolver in .22 short sit with the law? Does it say .22LR specifically or .22 rimfire?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,071 ✭✭✭✭Grizzly 45

.22 rimfire in some cases of the acts, and on your license as .220 inches!

Wasn't there a subsequent SI that specified .22lr?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,507 ✭✭✭✭kowloon

Does the 5 round restriction require destructive work to block the extra chambers or is there a more sympathetic option than welding and permanently destroying the piece?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,623 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

22lr specifically. SI 21 of 2008 said rimfore but was amended in 2009 to specify 22lr only because, as with all legislation, those drafting it didn't realise there are a multitude of rimfore calibers.

SI 391 of 2015 only refers to magazines but states the so long as it's made or adapted to hold no more than 5. It was meant to clear up SI337 of 2009 and did to an extent but still never addressed revolvers, seemingly only focusing on a firearm that takes a magazine.

There’s no mention of permanence in any of the acts. So long as it functions in a legal manner, eg 5 round pistol mags, it’s ok. Whether you can reverse the modification isn’t considered.

Some useful stats on how many firearms were licensed here last year and in what counties. Be a bit worried that according to the article "human killers" are licensed here too!!😮

Very misleading, most of those will be renewals although I know it's basically a new application but there is not now 95K new guns. Plus I would expect 2021 to be higher as the three year licences started in 2015, six years ago last year so a lot of renewals would be up. Is my logic sound on that?

Three year licensing was introduced by the 2009 Criminal Justice ( Miscellaneous Provisions) Act. Those with restricted pistols, afaik, were the first to be renewed (along with their other firearms) and it went from there.

I sent my renewals off in July of 2009 and new licenses "started" from October 2009.

I'd be interesting to see what's being licensed as humane killers. Is it a 32 cashman like the ones mentioned in the Commissioner's Guidelines or a 22lr pistol or something else.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 1,586 Mod ✭✭✭✭otmmyboy2

I doubt we'd get such granular detail, but I do know 2 folks in my locality who have .22 pistols licenced as humane killers with 5 round mags so it is doable.

Neither are target shooters or members of ranges either, so no dual use there.

Never forget, the end goal is zero firearms of any type.

S.I. No. 21/2008 - Firearms (Restricted Firearms and Ammunition) Order 2008 - Firearm types restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009 - Firearms banned & grandfathered

S.I. No. 420/2019 - Magazine ban, ammo storage & transport restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2023 - 2023 Firearm Ban (retroactive to 8 years prior)

Does it state in legislation and or an SI that you have to be a member of an authorised range?

Section 4(2)(e) of the principal act states that if a rifle or pistol is sought for target shooting that the person must be a member of an authorised range.

If applying for a humane killer then obviously you won't be target shooting hence don't need to be a member of a range.

Was reading a magazine the other day. And there was an article/review on Sig Bluetooth rangefinders - and this may be well known, but rangefinders are not something I’m too up to spend on.

My understanding is that, the range finder has a ballistic calc build in. when you range a target. Instead of saying just 300m, ot also gives you the adjustment, in moa/clicks. And if you pair it with a scope with a digital reticle. You don’t need to adjust the scope. Just range the target, and the holdover mildot illuminates.

I don't see an issue with the time stamps on any other forum so it just seems to be a case of no posts since then.

I've stuck in a test post and it's top of the listing so it seems to be working fine.

    Very nice indeed.

I'm too mean to pay for a sub to the paper, so went looking and found the full text elsewhere - hope it's from the right article :
A newly developed student accommodation building in the heart of Trinity College Dublin will come with a unique offering: a firing range in its basement.

The Printing House Square project, which has cost €60m to develop and will house 248 students when it finally opens over three years behind schedule off Dublin’s Pearse Street, will be the new home for the university’s rifle club.

The Dublin University Rifle Club (DURC), which has been in existence for over 60 years and has 100 members, said on social media last week it expects its new underground range to open in mid-October and it hoped to open every weekday evening.

The club trains and competes in the Olympic target shooting events that include using a small bore single loaded 5.6mm (.22 inches) calibre rifle over 50 metres and an air rifle over 10 metres.

The new 10-lane range will be located under the student accommodation, a new Disability Hub and Health Centre.

The shooting range is part of a sports centre that also includes squash and handball courts. There have been security concerns raised at the board of the university over the idea of having a rifle shooting range in a student accommodation building. The redeveloped building faces on to Pearse Street and the garda station located there.

Minutes of a Trinity board meeting from January show the issue was raised with Professor Kevin O’Kelly, the building project’s lead in Trinity.

He told board members that at an early stage of the project’s design, board members had been invited to a presentation from the rifle club and Trinity Sport.

“He confirmed that there is a separate entrance from outside the building into the range and that there is no direct access between the accommodation and the range below,” the minutes state.

“He also noted that the facility is very secure with the rifles themselves stored in a separate location to the ammunition and that An Garda Síochána were satisfied with the security measures in place.”

The minutes show Linda Doyle, Trinity’s provost, said the matter could be discussed further at a future meeting. Another board member requested a visit to the new range be facilitated. This was arranged for April.

This weekend, TCD said the DURC and its range facilities have been in existence in Trinity for over 60 years.

“The rifle club is dedicated to the sport of Olympic target shooting, with disciplines including air rifle and small bore,” it said.

“We believe the security arrangements around this facility are second to none. The new range at Printing House Square, Trinity College Dublin, replaces previous long-term and temporary facilities on campus, and has been developed in conjunction with best practice and the latest design regulations, as advised by the national range inspector from the Department of Justice, and a representative of An Garda Síochána.

“The range and club operating model meet the required national safety and security standards, along with appropriate procedures and approval systems within the university.

“DURC will continue their long-standing presence as a university club from the new Printing House Square facilities later this year.”

A garda spokesman said gardaí in Pearse Street “have not received any application in relation to the construction of a rifle range in the Dublin 2 area”.

In response to this, TCD said there is one final authorisation due from gardaí. “This can’t be completed until the range is fully operational and has reached the high standard required by An Garda Síochána,” it said.

The DURC did not respond to requests for comment.
Thanks,

    G.

Or given latest figures of 48000 Ukrainians and 16000 other nationalities granted leave to settle in Ireland in 2022, so far, and government stats as less than 70% women and children, means that between 14400 and 19200 could be sitting in the Irish pub or bedroom or drinking in the park or on the street in any Irish town, where by the way, open drinking is against the law (only if you are Irish). Extrapolate this to include the very many countries under pressure from Ukrainian "so called refugees" and you get more realistic figures

@itisnotgrand Highly doubtful you'd license it. Would never get past the good reason argument and rightly so.

No need for it, no use for it and utterly impractical for any Irish needs.

One of the more advanced designs of usually a "knock the lever off the ledge" and fire design. Most are so bulky and crudely made, even the slowest inept security personnel would spot one these days. This was conceived as a last ditch[a VERY last ditch!]Concealed weapon for undercover LE personnel...It wasn't a very big hit...

Nice bit of mini engineering and lathe work, but unless you are in the hitman business and even then in maybe one in a thousand situations you could use such. An absolute gimmick to be enjoyed as such.

What do you guys do with yours? Do you try repairing them or is there anyone around who can fix these? Not talking about quality brand names here, just the generic Brand X 50/100 euros optics.
