Lads/Lasses, if any of you aren't on twatter or facebook, Tesla are actively seeking out SuC Partners for Ireland. At the event on Saturday (I was not there), they apparently said there are a few more SuC sites as yet to be announced that are working their way through the process... so it seems more are on the way.

So if you know someone with sway in a hotel, or Retail Park, or any location for that matter that could be a suitable SuC location, please send them this link, and ask them to register their interest in becoming a SuC site host.

Could you imagine a sh1t ton of SuC's dotted all around the country, 2 stalls, 4 stalls here and there in random locations? Imagine never being more than 40-50km away from a SuC? or a SuC never being more than 5 minutes off any given route in the country.

Ireland is unique in that our motorway network isn't massive as it simply doesn't need to be, so once there are a few key SuC sites along some motorway sections (which we already have and are getting), the rest can be anywhere really, as long as they are say within 5 minutes of the end of a motorway (Cork), or close to a National Road (Tralee).

There's no reason why there couldn't be 20-30 SuC sites all over the country.

Who pays for the electricity if tesla install superchargers?

I passed it on to a hotel owner in Carlow that I know. Fingers crossed he'll even have a nosey at it.

I think wexford (M/N11) and Enniskillen (+/50km radius) and we're done tbh.

I'd love to get to a day where you can traverse the country using only SuC, like Norwegians have done for years!

Actually they haven't! It was a bit of a problem getting to the north cape, could not be done with SuC only until recent times afaik...

We need a supercharger on the m11 and m9 and then one in the southeast probably in waterford at the end of the M9 and the n25 to cork, that would cover then pretty much all of the country except for the northeast

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,194 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

On the M11 the Gorey services would be ideal, next to Ionity they could install 4 SuC’s

on the M9 they could go into either J9 services or the J7 services…..

for the Northeast, somewhere around Sligo, and perhaps even Cavan on the way to Sligo…

then up North, Derry would complete the island…

They could install an SUC at Oylgate just off the Enniscorthy bypass and the last village before Wexford town and on route to Rosslare.

There's a petrol station on the way out of the village that's got a bit of space where you could put a few chargers.

too far south IMO, too close to wexford for the wexford to dublin leg.

Gorey services has loads of spaces, and obviously has power as there's Ionity there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,194 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

I think Gorey would cover the M11, and the services at Carlow/Rathcrogue/J5 would cover the M9.

Do those 2 sites and you can draw a line like below, and everything south/east of it is covered by SuC's.... leaving Sligo & Derry as the obvious 2 locations to complete the whole country..... then any smaller gaps can be filled in with micro 2/4 stall sites in hotels etc....

Waterford would be a good shout, and perhaps West Cork also...

Belfast service centre open a long while. See plugshare app entry. They only have home destination type chargers there for service reasons. They are waiting on a grid connection for superchargers. In the mean time their demo cars are using the esb charger down the road, causing it to be constantly busy as it's one of the only working 50kW chargers in Belfast. There is plans from ESB to replace many chargers this year, but some have been broken for years. If big grid connections take 4 years then I hope lots of applications have already gone in.

The supercharger location at Enfield will expose Tesla drivers to a pretty frustrating situation with the tolls I think. Say coming from Dublin, you pay the full toll (unless leave motorway at Kilcock), then heading on to the motorway again West at the Enfield interchange, will have to pay again a second time again (this time a reduced rate I think). This toll situation in Enfield has long been strange to me. I know EV drivers have half price tolls, and value of a supercharge outweighs tolls, but still frustrating to be paying over the odds.

    Nope. Wrong wrong wrong.

    You pay the toll once.

I passed by Sandyford this morning. My non-technical update is that there's a hole in the ground that they're still digging.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,496 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Is it actually at the SC or is it nearby? The actual SC location is very difficult to get to off the motorway.

It's just past the service centre: https://goo.gl/maps/oiCxt8Fr2NmCNW6y9. Sandyford is a lot quieter than it used to be so traffic is less of an issue.

I had this thought as well, once you reenter the Motorway travelling the same direction within 3 hours you do not get another toll from what I remember (others here explained it).

Should be fun seeing what actually happens...

Yes this is the case. If (as most EV owners would) you have a tag it's done automatically, if not keep the receipt.

Tolls is a non-issue if you are heading in the same direction. @slave1 is correct regarding the 3 hour rule. Similar situation at Drogheda on M1.

This is from the Transport Infrastructure Ireland website about re-entry M4 Toll Plaza (opens a PDF)

In accordance with the Toll Bye-Laws, where a vehicle has passed through a Toll Collection location and within a 3 hour period passes through a second Toll Location in the same direction of travel, the driver of such a vehicle shall be exempt from paying the toll at the second Toll Collection location.

In practical terms a driver travelling from Dublin who pays a toll at the mainline toll plaza, and exits at Enfield, can within 3 hours, continue his journey westbound by reentering the motorway through the Enfield toll ramps without further charge.

In order to avail of this re-entry facility westbound, the driver must request a re-entry ticket from the cashier in a manned lane at the first toll plaza where the initial toll charge is paid. When you reach the unmanned Enfield toll ramp, please press the re-entry button on the automatic machine and your re-entry transit should be granted. Failing this, please press the assistance button, which will connect you to the 24hr Toll Supervisors control room.

Similarly a driver travelling from the west who exits at the Enfield toll ramps and who pays a toll, can within 3 hours, continue on his/her journey Eastbound by re-entering the motorway through the Enfield interchange and will not pay a further charge at the mainline toll plaza.

In order to avail of this re-entry facility Eastbound, the driver must request a re-entry ticket from the automatic machine at the unmanned Enfield toll ramp where the initial toll charge is paid. This re-entry ticket must be provided to a cashier at the mainline toll plaza.

    TL;DR - stump up €1.23 a month and get a toll tag.

NOTE you need to contact your provider to ensure they apply the EV discount to your account.

it is going to be on RHS as you enter the premises, like in the picture below

    image.png

Pretty tight parking and no amenities but it is what it is. As to access from M50 is not that bad now as it was in 2019. Getting out is easier as getting in if you're heading back to M50 as they've opened a third lane feeding onto M50 roundabout. The bottleneck is still the same junction as getting in but you have two intermittent yellow left turns which help as well.

Traffic is no problem there at all. It's about 5 minutes from the M50 and half of that is driving parallel to it, at near M50 speeds anyway 😁

I can't see this location being mental busy, it's out of the way and the SC already have a number of 22kW Charge Points for their own use. Most of the Tesla loaner S vehicles I've got are not CCS enabled either so they won't be using these stalls.

If I'm coming up/down from Bray direction maybe once or twice a year it's unlikely I'll "stop" off, easier for me to just stop at Enfield which is much more accessible. Obviously different for those on different routes

Coming to Sandyford from a Northerly direction (from the M50) is a bit of a pain if your not familiar with it as the car will tell you to take the slip towards Goatstown after exiting from J13 off the M50, but if you do take that slip, in order to turn right onto Blackthorn Drive you'd have to drive over a solid hatched line.... I've done it myself a few times as I wasn't too familiar, but the better option is to ignore the navigation and go straight up to the roundabout, and then take the left (just ahead of the Beemer below).

    Screenshot 2021-11-29 at 15.01.34.png

Taking the above slip to Goatstown brings you here; and to get into one of the turn right lanes (you need to be in the furthest right lane to then make the following turn from Blackthorn Drive to Blackthorn Road towards Tesla), you need to cross the solid white line/hatched area, and if those 2 lanes are busy that could be a nightmare...

    Screenshot 2021-11-29 at 15.05.54.png

So in summary, not the greatest location for a SuC, but we'll have it....

I've often driven over those lines going in to the SC, my pathetic excuse if asked was sorry gard I'm up from the country and following the satnav!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,428 ✭✭✭markpb

Or avoid all that and exit at J14 (if coming from the south) instead. No messing around with the green route and it's poorly-understood exit lanes and no pottering along at 80kph :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭innrain

You have to get on the most right lane from the last picture as after you turn right on Blackthorn Drive you need to make another right turn in 100m and doing this from the left lane is a bit ...

I bet will be busy though. The ESB charger is a bit further away and it is fully occupied most of the time. The area is very busy with Teslas and EVs in general. It is a very dense area with both businesses and residential high rises. There will be people working around who would need a top up before returning home. There are lots of apartments in the area and even though some have communal chargers my understanding is they are not reliable. DLR CoCo installed few lamp post chargers nearby but not sure what the situation is with the parking as they are not marked EVs only.

Not really. How many old Model S are there even in the country? Surely only a 2 digit number? Do we know this?
