I have read both articles and while they are somewhat similar, feels like the first one was a subtle boost to the auld "Fear-O-Meter", especially as they happened to be reporting on improving numbers on the day.

I don't blame the guy, it's the media (or the Government when it suits) who leap onto this stuff.

Holohan was due to speak to the committee yesterday. On Tuesday Media outlets got hold of some of the prepared remarks and put a spin on them, on Wednesday he appeared before the committee and remarks were entirely consistent with the direct quotes in the media reports of the previous day. Not with the spin in the headlines and restrictions thread selective reading however.

People here see inconsistency because they only see the negative spin and not the entire content. When exposed to the entire content of course its not consistent with the negative spin.

It’s just a few more weeks.

I am genuinely feeling worried for the rabbit holes some have wandered into

I don't agree with that video.

But I do agree that the "it's just a few more weeks" narrative back in Jan/Feb/Mar/Apr was really bad for mental health.Well mine anyway.

The rest of the stuff in that video...that is a very deep hole to go down.

Of course the media got hold of the information, I wonder how.

Did you actually read the quotes or just the spin that the usual suspects lap up?

Oh, I listened to the experts. I followed all the rules for the first year or so...and then it was a sliding scale. The event in the north was outdoors, I had 'recovered' (still no taste and limited smell) so didn't require the vaccine or a mask. I'm still wearing a mask in indoor settings where it's required. I continue to listen to the experts.

    "Prepared remarks"

So the guy writes down what he going to say, it gets to the media in advance and then he rocks up to the Dail to read out what he has already written?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 971 ✭✭✭Parachutes

Makes a lot more sense when you realise the government and media are one entity.

Not most people, 99,9% of the population, so yes it has been blown out of proportion

That's indoctrination right there. Hypnosis by repetition.

Spanish and Russian flu are where then? MERS makes small outbreaks in Saudi etc every year. The issue with these outbreaks from China is they never allow international scientists in so nobody knows for sure where any of the Chinese based ones actually originate from... A classic case of science being suffocated by politics

Covid has animal reservoirs in a huge number of different species, and so will never go away.

Spanish and Russian flu are just strains of flu - either they were outcompeted by similar influenza strains or they mutated into something else. They were not eradicated through vaccination or other NPIs

Its pretty standard that an outline of responses to previously submitted questions would be provided prior to testimony at an oireachtas committee. And once again there was nothing in the quotes that was in any way objectionable other than by those who believe TH is the great satan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 935 ✭✭✭darconio

Last time I mentioned it in here, I unleashed a witch-hunt by the usual suspects. I was told that it was immoral and vile to use the tragedy of several young people death to support my argument: obviously the other way around doesn't work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 935 ✭✭✭darconio

And I perfectly agree with you, it should be a personal choice based on the individual best judgement. Unfortunately they are pushing the vaccination on anything that moves and breath, according to the experts the children are now the main culprit (and any "no-vax" of course)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,173 ✭✭✭✭seamus

No, it's not the Dail, it's an Oireachtas committee. Each person who speaks in front of an Oireachtas committee prepares their remarks in advance and provides them to the committee before reading them out in person. The media often get a hold of these, maybe they're public by default as soon as they're sent to the committee.

This sounds like a ridiculous set up, but the idea is that if the committee are sent the statement in advance of the meeting, then they can prepare meaningful questions to ask. Otherwise the committee needs to think up questions on the fly.

There's also a procedural element to it, that the person reading their statement is reading it "officially" into the record in the presence of the committee.

So, for you it is all just a conspiracy between governments and media, orchestrated by some person or persons unknown for some unspecified reason. This virus is basically harmless, but the vaccines to combat it are killing large numbers of people which is going unreported (due to this worldwide government and media conspiracy I can only presume), yet somehow having somehow access to all this information you still choose to get vaccinated.

    Very strange.

That's mostly because of how difficult it is to confirm a repeat infection, you need someone to have tested positive, then sample the infection to determine which variant, then get a negative test then later get a positive test and sample it again to confirm it's a different variant to the original infection.

The rate of those testing positive > 90 days after their initial positive result is comparable to those infected after vaccines (often higher), but we can't confirm if a lot of those are reinfections due to the difficulty I describe above (and either way, if someone has a positive test later, either they are reinfected or their immune system wasn't able to clear the original viral load, neither of which is a good story for the purposely unvaxxed idiots).

No, just the numbers that support darconio's idiotic narrative please! Everything else is a lie, only they know their truth (but won't actually go out with the gemmaroids to protest about it, so lesser-gemmaroid I guess?).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,714 ✭✭✭timmyntc

The studies account for this - the study people who are naively vaccinated (no prior exposure to the virus, no antibodies) and people who had a previous infection.

It's examined over different timeframes also, to give confidence estimates as to which variant they were exposed to - there's pre-delta and post-delta data. Most of the initial exposures (for natural immunity participants) are well beyond 90days, so there is no confusion as to whether they were still infected or something like that.

Yes, and they include all the caveats within the data and doesn't have "natural infection" being any better than vaccine unless you discount most of the unconfirmed reinfections. This data drives the guidance around getting the vaccine even if you have been infected previously, but please, if you know better, present that information, remembering to take into account the chances of catching COVID (which most lay people leave out).

You’re strawmanning me. A conspiracy? No not exactly, but it’s hard to not see that media is the mouthpiece of the Government and are not really critical of any government policies, quite the opposite actually. Cheerleaders in some cases.

Through ineptitude, bureaucratic means or other we have been lied to about certain aspects of the pandemic. If you believe the Government have been completely honest throughout the pandemic and haven’t made a complete hames of the public health response you seriously need to put your critical thinking hat on.

As for vaccines I took one, I never claimed millions were dying, but yes people have died as a result of taking this vaccine and have had other bad reactions. This is just a fact.

The efficacy of the vaccines has been called into question repeatedly. They are not as effective as we have been told.

Unconfirmed infections could be easily as likely to apply in the vaccinated cohort also.

This data is more recent, study was published last month or something so no it doesnt drive the guidance around getting the vaccine.
