I'm guessing that they will be allowing the use of lockers in the changing rooms but trying to prevent people from changing there, i.e. you arrive ready and leave as you came.

As for the slots you can book, I can only guess that the vast majority won't stay the full 90 mins (a lot of people were gone after an hour when it was 75 minutes). If they limit the numbers booking a slot, it's unlikely any more than 10% from the previous 90 minutes will be there for too much of the slot after so it still controls numbers to a degree.

    But I'm speculating.

No matter what they do, its not perfect, but set time slots at least had some kind of logic. This new one has far more flaws in it. It def suits me better, it was absolute pain in the face queuing to get in, particularly if it was raining/there was a slo-mo on the door letting folks in. However, I'm sure others will do exactly what I plan to, which is to not show up at the start of the session but just book one to get close enough to the actual time I wanna be there and then stay as long as it suits. That's where it becomes much harder to regular the number of folks in the gym and you'll end up with folks who do turn up on time, being refused entry because there's too many.

Aside from all that, im actually gonna head back to Carlisle, it was actually pretty good for the few weeks that it was open before Christmas.. huge gym, lots of equipment and a dwindling membership base and no booking. I had kept the Flyefit going just to head along with the other half.

Any of your gyms looking for a rejoining fee ?

My wife was pregnant last summer so we cancelled our membership and at the time were assured there would be no joining fee again as essentially it was due to pregnancy / medical issue as much as anything else.

She went to rejoin now with the reopening soon and they are saying that they have changed policy and a rejoining fee will apply across the board no exceptions.

you could probably try to negotiate it down? either a gym lets you suspend membership or not.

Showers and saunas all open in the gyms I've been at here in London. No masks required on the gym floor. Feels pretty much as it did pre covid tbh.

    That's a bit dated now.

Athletics Ireland linked to it on their update on 18th May.

My point is FF are not alone in their stance. There isn't particular guidance so there will be differences. But they aren't alone and have decided to do that for whatever reason. I'm sure it will be revised in the not-too-distant future.

How long do they expect to leave showers out of bounds. It's a joke that they will be closed again in fairness. People leaving the gym all sweaty etc. Not very conjusive to proper hygiene.

Ireland Active (Representative body for leisure sector) sent updated guidelines today. The only reason changing rooms and showers should be closed is if the number cant be controlled or if changing rooms are shared between pool/gym etc and this might lead to overcrowding at start and finish of times sessions.

FF are not alone, but in the minority, I believe. It doesn't affect me (or anyone I know) I just think its poor form for people who are back to work on site and would love to go back.

Had a gander at the 5 gyms I would potentially go to instead of FF and while It's a small sample, it doesn't look like FF would be in minority at this point in time.

But I expect it will change before too long

I've said this before I think, but I would have no objection to wearing a mask while training.

I don't have an opinion on masks one way or another, but I could certainly see the rationale behind being asked to wear one if training indoors.

I think people probably think it would be much more noticeable/uncomfortable that it would actually be. Probably the same people who think they need to take their mask off to speak

(Edit: I'm probably talking more about strength training tbf, but even cardio wouldn't be too big a deal if you're wearing a paper-type mask and not doing 20km in sweltering heat)

I have to say I would wear a mask if I HAD too but I would hope not too.

Yeah no, you can keep your masks. Look at the gym demographic, full of young healthy people, exactly the type that aren't dying from covid.

Do young people never come into contact with older, vulnerable folks? That logic makes zero sense, sure why get younger people vaccinated with that mentality. The point of masks was to try and limit/stop out of control spread of the virus. I'm glad I dont have to wear one, but there is a clear logic why they should be used in gyms.. just the same as there's a logic behind them required everywhere else indoors. Dont know about your gym, Carlisle/Ben Dunne is not just full of young 'healthy' people, its full of people of all ages. Flyfit definitely a younger demographic sure.

The ones that are all vaccinated now? Sure they do.

There not all vaccinated though are they? The vast majority of folks are on a first dose, never mind the ones that have only received a first dose of AZ (many of whom are front docs/nurses), which isn't particularly effective against Indian/Delta variant. Again, by that logic, why are we wearing masks ANYWHERE else? Not worried about myself, nor keen to wear a mask in the gym, but I can see the obvious logic behind it and the completely inconsistent logic behind NOT making them mandatory in gyms. The gov to this point were not making decisions re: lockdown based on the demographics of who's got it, just the number of cases, it's in everyone's interest to try and keep those numbers low.

They're not my masks, as I said (in the post that you quoted) I don't really have an opinion on them one way or the other.

I'm just saying the idea of them being uncomfortable to train in is wildly exaggerated.

I could do mask wearing while weight training but cardio with a mask would be a disaster.

That was how I felt last time round but I did on 2 occasions wear a mask weight training as the gym was busy in the section I was working out in and I found it tough. Obviously Ill suck it up if the alternative is no training.

My gym just posted that same rules apply as last Christmas, hourly slots, sanitize equipment, bring a towel and no masks thank God.

BD didn't have masks at Christmas and don't believe they will next week... thankfully.... Not long to go now!!

looking forward to the rowing machine, I missed the exact progression one could keep track of. The lifting equipment I had at home was more suited to keep the legs ticking over , the only heavy upper body exercise i could do was a landmine press, it will be an interesting week

was doing it more or less every day when things were open, if youre an elite athlete maybe a problem but im far from that so it it was fine. i use UA/Adidas ones, i do imagine the disposable ones would probably get uncomfortable though. think i read a study somewhere that recommended taking masks off after 2 hours of moderate pace running to stop possible CO2 build-up when exhaling, so realistically unless someone is marathon training they should be fine

The Real Science of Sport Podcast on detraining/complete break from training and the physiological impact of it.

Well worth a listen for those that might be freaking out about how weak they might have become

    https://podcasts.apple.com/za/podcast/fitness-adaptation-reversibility-how-fast-do-we-lose/id1461719225?i=1000524049441

Strength training covered specifically in the last 20 minutes or so but would recommend listening to all of it because principles can apply across the board.
