Or I could just join a new one and not have to wait

Westwood was discussed on the last page so this is as good a place as any to ask - what is the Leopardstown one like at 6am out of interest? Particularly benches and racks - enough to go around, or is it pretty busy?

I left a couple of years ago but never went at that time anyway. I've been going to Anytime Fitness since then (when open) and have been really enjoying the quietness/emptiness of 5am sessions, but I do miss the spa...

Edit: Also, what's the price these days? I've joined twice in the past, and each time I've been brought into a room and given the sales pitch about "well our joining fee is such and such, but let me just go speak to someone as we might have a very limited number of offers left...."

Really grinds my gears we have to wait until the Monday for gyms to open... I mean lumping them in with pubs is absolutely mental. A wasted weekend I could be back training. Instead it's work a 12 hour shift on the Monday and bate 29 other people in a race to the bench press after.

the fact monday the 7th is a bank holiday might mean normal peak hours or evenings might be less crowded, people might head in throughout the day rather then the normal peak hours

FLYEfit reopening next Monday...no more restrictions on the length of training and you can book two slots a day. Not sure why you would book two slots if there is no restriction on time but anyway....

They will also have a function where they predict how busy the gym will be when you're intending to go!

when I was at peak fitness I used to do some treadmill work in morning and do an evening weights session. The booking two slots would suit that sort of carry on.
I won't be doing it though :pac:

Yeah true. I had forgotten I did that myself....lunchtime and evening some days

Curious as to how they manage numbers to any degree if there is no limit.

Shocking that Flye Fit and Ben Dunne are not opening their changing rooms. Hopefully, Flye will see sense as it will harm their membership once people start to get back to the office.

    Lockers and toilets are available.

See sense? You are aware most of the under 45s are still unvaccinated and there's an ole pandemic about?
WFH is to continue until September iirc. 3 months away.

And what's the problem with changing rooms? Are they more dangerous than the gym floor or shop floors? Once the same precautions are taken, no reason at all why changing rooms cant be opened. A huge amount of people have continued working throughout and no changing rooms mean they cant use gyms that haven't opened their changing rooms.

I'm talking about showers. No showers mean a lot of people cant go back yet.

Their new rules re: timeslots is better for customers in one way, not sure what purpose it serves though (covid wise and managing numbers i mean). You can come at any time in your chosen slot, i.e. 1 minute before it ends and they stay as long as you like. Just defeats the whole purpose of limiting numbers at any one time I'd have thought. Again, suits me at least, but doesn't seem to make sense on the face of it.

Well, you specifically said changing rooms hence the response.

Didn't seem to be an issue at lunchtimes since they reopened last July though. Always busy.

Well perhaps you should have mentioned that so :)

Sanitising showers in between uses would be labour intensive so in a practical sense a non runner. Also, as anyone who has had a shower knows the ole droplets are prone to travel.

Dont really understand the issue with showers. It's well established by now that the spread is driven by aerosols, the obsession with hand washing and spraying equipment etc is futile, even less so with showers I'd imagine. Exercising on gym floor and heavy breathing/expelling aerosols is "safe", but keeping your gob relatively shut in the shower/separate cubicles isnt. Am I missing something that makes showers less safe than the gym floor.

    Sorry, should have been clearer!

There is no need to sanitise showers and water droplets are no risk. (It is my job to know this)!
It's cost-saving and/or laziness. Most gyms kept their showers opened last time. There are some concerns around the use of hairdryers and hand dryers so these should be kept out of commission for now.

Is the constant spraying of equipment and dumbbells not also a complete waste of time? Unless folks are licking their fingers in between sets.

I suppose the logic is to get people out the door as quick as possible, workout grab your stuff and go.

Flyefits insta was confusing last night said you can stay as long as you want but then booking slots are for only 90 minutes.

Folk breathing in an area of increased humidity is obviously an increased risk?
What's your job that makes you an expert on the subject?

Smaller area, increased humidity, less than wonderful ventilation/extraction I would imagine.
I'm not so sure the gym floor is that safe either though tbh .......... any setting indoors is less than great.

If you think it's an issue, and don't feel comfortable using showers in a gym, that's fine. I'm just stating the facts and don't really want to go further than that in this forum.

Hope you enjoy getting back into the gym

CDC guidance is also to limit access to changing room use for locker use and the jacks. Same as Sport Ireland guidance so it's not like FLYEfit decided to make their decision in a vacuum.

Maybe if they see it has had an impact on membership, they might change.

The showers themselves couldnt be (much) less safe than having the changing rooms open though. Surely the spread of aerosols is less of a risk when you have shot to the floor aerosols mixing with high pressure soapy water. Flyefits changing rooms are open, but showers are closed. Haven't seen any specifically stated logic or science to back it up, so far anyway, maybe I'm not looking in the right place. All the more confusing with their 'stay as long as you like' booking slots.

I'm guessing that they will be allowing the use of lockers in the changing rooms but trying to prevent people from changing there, i.e. you arrive ready and leave as you came.

As for the slots you can book, I can only guess that the vast majority won't stay the full 90 mins (a lot of people were gone after an hour when it was 75 minutes). If they limit the numbers booking a slot, it's unlikely any more than 10% from the previous 90 minutes will be there for too much of the slot after so it still controls numbers to a degree.

    But I'm speculating.

That's a bit dated now. Ireland Active say that changing room closure should be considered when numbers cannot be controlled in there. We've installed a traffic light system similar to most supermarkets.
