Overseas travel unlikely before August along with a lot “ uncertainty to give clarity.”

Good god. How much date vagueness can we shove into one article.

Half way down after talking about the end of June we get ....

He said he hopes that the Common Travel Area between Ireland and the UK will be restored "very soon", allowing people to travel to Britain without restrictions.

He said that he hopes it would happen at some point this summer or autumn.”

    AUTUMN? Wtf ?

Having seen Leo’s video and the clear jump from his CTA advocacy last week to this approach, I have decided that it is click bait. He’s not one to turn and run away from his statements if he can avoid it. The video statement was the introduction of wee Mr Geegawn as the candidate for Eoghan Murphy’s seat. This has turned potentially toxic for Leo (likely only male candidate, absolute establishment candidate, Kate O’Connell’s statement, it being stated to be a referendum on his leadership etc) so I think he wanted the opportunity to get him on national media (plays well in DBS) and making a newsworthy comment has secured that. I don’t think there’s much more substance to it than that.

Anyone know what the deal is at the ferry ports for travel to the UK? Are the Gardaí there checking Reason for travel / handing out fines does anyone know...

Apart from those constrained by kids school holidays, why would anyone want to go away in high Summer at all, any year not just now.

Crowds, unbearable heat, choc a bloc airports and so on. I get it, some are teachers, some have kids on Summer break, but unless your job precludes you wouldn't it be far better to just hang in there until mid September or so? Cooler weather, not so crowded and so on.

But before you all descend on me, I understand the impatience to get away to the sun.

I do get your viewpoint, but why not go in the summer and in September. Best of both worlds then

And people are booking holiday's to Italy at the end of June. Probably will be stopping off in Poland for a long weekend beforehand.

    .

God... I’d love to know what this “very soon” means for the UK travel bubble ! Do you wrecken it might come into play June 2nd when the fines are lifted and by then the UK have free reign to travel for holidays too.

My family are hoping to come over mid June. I’ve my fingers crossed

Not a bad idea at all! I might add that to my itinerary, bolt on a couple of days to see wroclaw, never been there

I’ll give you my honest answer .... I don’t have a clue . Not only that though , Leo , mickey and Donnelly etc don’t know either.

There’s nothing they’re saying that’s cohesive regarding CTA with the UK (never mind EU travel) thus far.

Today is no different. Twists and turns peppered with empty promises and vague dates and no adherence to any joined narrative. (As usual robot radio interviewers failing miserably to pin them down on dates and details of implementation of the EU green card)

Regarding your families visit via the UK . Just bear in mind that Belfast airport is a perfectly accessible option if they are visiting you . I’d leave it for a few weeks to book flights and see if the three stooges in government announce something practical and realistic in the meantime .

Someone posted on here a few weeks ago that they travelled by ferry as a foot passenger and were questioned by gards at departure.

Mhq applies to ferries from france so I believe they are there too currently.

I haven't specifically read about people being fined at Dublin or rosslare but the power to fine still exists.

The alternative is ferry to the UK from belfast to cairnryan. 2 hours crossing, no gards, no PCRs but it's a very long drive south once you are there.

Family holiday June 28th to Italy looks a very very long shot now :o

I also checked the flight and there are only 28 seats booked, so can see that getting cancelled over the next short while when Leo makes his announcement official

It is probably better for me that the flight does get cancelled and I might get some money back, cause the resort I am supposed to be going to has been advertising all week that they are open for business

so near but yet so far

I wouldn't panic yet. We're booked for Italy 2 weeks later. As for the number of seats booked, are you just looking at the amount of people checked in? Likely that most haven't as it's easier to make changes if you're not I believe. We were on a flight over last year with 19 on board.

Why on earth would you even consider going on a family holiday to Italy at the moment ?

Went there last summer. The plus side of travelling in a pandemic was the tourist spots were much quieter, the hotel/business owners were even more welcoming than ever, it upset all the anti travel people I know, and we weren't force fed fear and encouraged to behave like finger waggers by the media everyday. It was so refreshing :)

Had a similar experience in Italy myself last September absolutely brilliant time as above oh and while it was peeing rain here it was high 20s in Sorrento blue skies and glorious sunrises and sunsets.

Same here, late Aug in Calabria, brilliant time and definitely hoping to do the same again this year.

Must have been great to see Sorrento that quiet, it can be over run, even in September. Our biggest surprise last year was Portofino, it was quiet without being completely dead, the best possible way to see it.

Fingers crossed. I'm starting to think Leo's prediction yesterday won't come to pass. I think it's yet another stalling tactic. They're too greedy to turn away tourist money.

I agree, the fine will be allowed to elapse, and the government will tell everyone to stay home, but once the fine is gone, that’s enough for everyone on this thread!

lads if we could stop Leo the Leak talking to the media for a week the whole mood of the country would improve 100 times.

I think all eyes are on NI. I firmly believe that the open door through there will finally force the governments hand.

Fear has really gripped this government, I live in Switzerland and everything has been open now for a long time with cases dropping and dropping to become insignificant. Also on the weekend I drove to Germany to go shopping, there are zero restrictions at the borders and guess what cases are dropping everywhere.

Ireland needs to become a member of the EU again and open up freedom of movement immediately

    Switzerland themselves aren't EU members.

Does that mean that discussion of opening the CTA is off - it sounds from this article like all travel was to be considered in relation to this report from the industry:

Yet, by the sound of it, they are more open to EU countries than Ireland

part of the common travel area and their Covid certificate for travel is compatable with the EUs
