I know it's remote training at the moment. Is there a lot of training or is it self learning modules? Thanks

Yeah, the entire department is WFH at the moment. You'll be given guidance by your line manager. A lot of it is learning as you go, but you'll be given tonnes of help!

Hi guys, I have just received my Invitation to Clearance, Batch 21 OOM 80+. Anyone know how long it usually takes from this point to be offered your position and start date? Thanks.

For me, it took 4 weeks approx from being reached on the panel to starting date.

    Good luck.

Maybe give them a call as thats the reply they gave to me so it could mean they have 38 interviewed & ready for positions that may come up

Because I think you are on a different panel to these. Aren't you on something like a HSE panel for clerical officer?

PAS have called up to 38 now for permanent placement in the civil service

If you are asked for references for AGS does that mean they have finished the enhanced vetting?

They have called upto OOM 38 for Limerick so far and they said the competition is due to close May 2021, if/when the campaign is closed all candidates will.be notified through message board....

When you say competition closing do you mean people on OOM for jobs will be discarded or only people that are going for interview?

Once a competition closes then anyone not already placed is discarded I'm afraid. You have to reapply. If you're waiting on clearance for AGS for example, that's different.

I never get anywhere off these panels and was told that it would be easier to get in to the civil service by applying to Dublin and then after a few years to ask for a transfer home.

Unfortunately, that’s true. I’ve been next in line for a CO position in county Meath now for over a month but none has come up.

Dublín was my second county and my original OOM was late 100s. I’m sure I would be in a job a few months by now had I continued on the Dublín panel as they are now interviewing in the 1000s. Unfortunately, we had to move out of Dublín this time last year due to my work hours being halved because of the pandemic and we were no longer able to justify paying €1,600 in rent so working there was no longer feasible.

This. Dublin takes hundreds off a panel. Meath probably take about 3. I'm exaggerating but it's much, much easier to get in on the Dublin panels. You can apply for mobility on day 1 and after 2 years you can move when they get to your position on the list.

We've COs in my place coming from Wexford.

This is true. A good chunk of the civil service is Dublin and the rest of it is scattered throughout the other 25 counties. Most counties would have a welfare office or two, a courthouse, garda civilians in stations and probably not a whole lot more than that.

The very fact people transfer from Dublin means more places in Dublin and less open places in regions

I got the call from HR in the department the day after my vetting was done so I would maybe follow up if I were you

Garda dress code has a picture of a lad in a shirt and tie as the example but jeans are on the acceptable list. COs in my place would be anything from a suit to jeans and a sweatshirt. Branded stuff wouldn't be ideal but black jeans and a shirt would be fine.

Edit just assumed you're a lad for some reason.

Same as anywhere: dress for the job you want, not the one you have!

My sister's version of this, where she worked, in theory there was a casual dress code but if an individual wanted to get promoted they didn't come to work in casual clothes.

I dressed up as Captain Kirk but the Chief wasn't impressed so I went back to a shirt and tie.

Hypothetically speaking, if someone was in office a couple of days a week and working from home for the rest, would it be feasible to live somewhere else in the country and just come up to Dublin for the necessary days?

Right not it's too early to say. Probably depends on how much working from home the civil service will allow after this. Not all civil service jobs can be done from home either.

Look up the usual interview questions and have answers for the most common (tell me a time etc) think Morgan McKinley have a list on their website. Use the STAR method to answer the questions (situation -talk about a time and place, Task- talk about what the job and what it entailed, Action - talk about what you did, Result/ talk about the outcome). If you use that method for most of your answers to common questions you’ll fly past. Don’t be nervous they are lovely (I was pre zoom so actually had to sit across them and they are very helpful). Know about the public service and different roles, know computer literacy stuff like what BCC is and how and when to use it. And you will be flying it. Best of luck.

I found it all pretty rapid, so just be prepared for that. I had fairly meaty examples ready for each of the different competencies but it seems they wanted it short and sweet, a lot of cutting across and then just swiftly moving onto the next etc, so don’t go in with a big long story about what you did, just be prepared to give a quick outline and say the right buzzwords.

Anyway, I just kept talking and found out today I passed so there’s that haha

Lots of people spent years commuting 80/90 miles to Dublin, 5 days a week.
So two days or three would be luxury to them!
Depends on the travel links, if it's a single transport type it helps a lot.

Have a friend who did 4 years in Dublin Airport, drove every day from Cavan town.
If your working hours suit it's not too bad, be on the road before six, get out at 4.30pm at the latest and it's almost non stop driving.

Apply for a transfer asap.... !

Can you tell me please what your order of merit is.

Hi all. So, I start as a CO next month. I'm looking forward to it. In regards to the regular and higher CO pay scale does anyone know what qualifies someone to be on the higher scale? Is it relating to qualifications or where you are placed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,032 ✭✭✭blindsider

Every new entrant to the CS starts on the 1st point of the scale. I'm unaware of any exceptions, regardless of experience, qualifications etc. Probation lasts 1 year.

(There MAY be an allowance if you're a fluent Irish speaker, and it's a requirement of the role. If you work shifts e.g. in Dublin Port, there is a shift premium of 25%.)

Each year, subject to satisfactory performance, you will move up 1 point on the pay scale (increments).

CO's are due a €500 pay increase in October(check month?) as part of a pay agreement.

Finally, FYI, CO's are paid weekly - Friday a.m. into your bank a/c.

    Very helpful thank you

And to add to blindsiders excellent summary, one point on the scale as a newly minted CO is about €8 a week extra into your pocket.
