You see nox what is essential and not depends largely on the timeframe considered. Just like food is not essential in the next hour, it becomes within the next 12h. Same goes for gyms and any other things that short term, yes could deemed non-essential, but long term they are very, very important. I would have thought that an R&D powerhouse such as you would have figured this out on the spot.
This virus is a long term problem and needs to be dealt with by a long term strategy. Period..

This logic does not apply to gyms. If gyms never opened again ever it would not cause any more than an inconvenience for anyone.

Tony Holohan had the chance to step aside for the duration - he was entitled to compassionate leave as anyone would be. He has come back and his wife is still terminally ill. I may be wrong but that is not what most people would do at a time like this in their personal life. Nobody put a gun to his head to be back at the helm!

(and I would agree, things were much calmer with Ronan Glynn in charge, Government and him were on the same page)

More than 100 cancer procedures cancelled in the north due to the pressures of Covid admissions to hospitals. They're putting it down to historical issues with a shortage of nurses in the order of 2,500 :(

Didn’t the standard holiday take place this Summer for the Dáil, or at least a month long one?

Not long after it took months to form a government?

In the middle of a crisis?

That's close my my reading of it:
    - Dail holiday
    - Distraction of the rotating big chair
    - False sense of security caused by falling COVID numbers

He stepped aside from the role for a number of months in the midst of a pandemic. This is not professional, he should not have come back as the CMO but as a support to the replacement CMO. Especially if this is as big a crisis as is made out to be, the CMO would be a pretty important role.

It’s purely ego driven. We’ll learn a lot more about this dr holohan in time- as if the Cervical cover up wasn’t enough for anyone

Health care system are astonishingly complicated beasts, most around the world are struggling with this one, but ours seems to be growing sh1t year on year, and it's not all the fault of the public sector, private sector involvement is also causing problems with it

You will need to spell that out for me,

Why is it going crap year on year. There is 2 many upper managements and consultants (non doctor) and admin taking. Every thing has to be taken down in triplicate and only x or y can do a certain job. The whole bloody lot from the top down and systems need a reform. Unions are certainly the problem and I say that as a public servant. Not everything require months and months on training if something new comes in. A centerlised system is all that needed so if needed for a case its all there. Certainly not exclusive to the HSE but other departments seem to be doing a whole lot more and a whole lot better

Tony was allowed have a sabbatical to "take care of personal business" which is a luxury he hasn't afforded to the rest of us.

Ya caring for his terminally ill wife, you make it sound so routine.

Maybe he had to come back as he was only given a certain amount of time. Or maybe his wife told him to go back. I know from my experience with my mother last year you want to be there as much as possible but sometimes you have to do the normal stuff. We would all like to be there for her but she would tell us to go and do our lives and she get very agitated if we did not so sometime you just have to do it

where would the national rugby team train? where would people doing post surgery rehab do their very type specific training?
there's tons of amateur sport disciplines that absolutely rely on gym work.
It would be no more of an inconvenience to you, end of story
as tiddlywinks and embroidery do not require a treadmill, kettle bells and a gym rack.

As somebody who has a family member with depression, the first thing a doc will say is, get more exercise, join a club or gym. This develops interpersonal skills as well as giving a person purpose to maybe mix a little and sit in a sauna even with strangers and just listen and experience more social intercourse..

you haven't a clue or a perspective in life f you honestly see gyms as being merely convenient....

Nox, it is your own logic that is flawed here. Because the gym for you is a non-essential thing short or long term it does not mean that it also isn’t for everybody else. You keep expressing this narrow minded perspective and assuming that everybody should be wired and think the same way.

I could as well say that a burst pipe in your home or a broken down car are non-essential items and you can survive without fixing them. I bet lots of people here would not give sh1t about those problems of yours either.

There you go Nox. Your own logic. Applied.

”Where’s the revolution? Come on, people you’re letting me down!”

BBC: The UK Transport Minister, Grant Shapps, has just included the Canary Islands in the safe travel green list from Sunday the 25th of October. UK citizens entering the Canary Islands will be exempt from quarantine on their return to the UK.

Jet2 have announced that they will resume their flights to the Canary Islands on October 30. It follows the UK government decision today to add the Canary Islands to its travel safe list. UK citizens will no longer need to quarantine on their return.

    Nothing from Ireland as usual...

It is great to see the people who were just 2 weeks away singing the praises of the government for giving a bloody news to NPHET and taking back control back atackinh them again even though it was the governments decisions. Maybe if NPHET advice had been taken we be half way through rather then just starting 6 weeks.

Also I aint giving you bleeding heart rubbish. You were the one with the "personal matters"

He was able to toddle off to compassionately deal with a personal issue while on guaranteed pay. Im unemployed solely as a result of their actions along with my two brothers, my father and my missus (all work in aviation).

He's not getting an iota of sympathy from me. I buried my grand father in April with only 7 people there because of this ****e. We couldn't even have drinks and a few sandwiches anywhere after.

That reminds me, I still have a week of holidays to take before Christmas. Might actually get a decent holiday somewhere abroad. At this point all I want is an open hotel, bars to have a quiet drink and restaurants where you can sit in. Not asking for a lot you would think. I will be monitoring this green list closely and bolting as soon as it is released.

How about blame the ones deciding to make these decisions THE GOVERNMENT. There you go again trying to make light of a serious situation he has. I know it is trendy here to have the big band but he aint do ing this for s"£ts and tricks. You want to blame anyone for the non adoption of the EU light system (coming in 2 weeks finally) again its is THE GOVERNMENT

You hate like him hell I don't like him either but at least I know who takes the final decisions and blame them

Why post such absolute sh/te? If you disagree with him, do, but this kinda personal childish stuff that makes no sense just makes you look like an idiot.

For what it's worth, I am not a Nox fan in general, but I do agree with his non-essential feelings towards gyms (yeah, I'm overweight and have a complex). You can pick up gym gear for home training, or recreate the majority of gym activities with stuff around the house.

They don't provide anything that you can't live without. I'd perhaps side with swimming pools being allowed open, as you can't generally swim up and down the main street of your town (unless you live in parts of Cork, perhaps).

Much as your situation isn't ideal, you do have to take into consideration, of course, that NPHET are a health team. They have expertise in health. They don't care about your job, they care about your health.

They will happily close your business and shoot your dog if it keeps you healthy. Their opinion should be taken as part of a larger group of opinions, given to government, and the government then decide the best overall approach.

I don't understand getting angry at health experts who focus specifically on health. There are other groups out there that focus on the economy, etc. but at the start of all this, the government's stumbling, squabbling and in-fighting meant they gave NPHET the spotlight for a while, and they effectively replaced the government and gained a lot of political weight, perhaps not on purpose, but it happened nonetheless. Now their opinion carries significantly more weight than any other groups opinion, as a result.

That said, I do think this level 5 will be a shambles, will make no difference, and perhaps be called off after 3-4 weeks. It's lenient in the extreme. No one even noticed level 3 came in, and level 5 has practically every 2nd shop open under the premise of 'click and collect'. Part of me thinks the government are just running with it so, when the numbers don't come down, they can then have a reason to ignore NPHET advice going forward.
