With regards to the Gardaí having the right to enter your household: Though Article 40 of the Constitution states that the dwelling of every citizen is inviolable, it also states that exceptions may be made where they are in accordance with law. Essentially this means that the government may grant AGS such powers and those powers would, in theory, operate within the confines of the Constitution. Now that's not to say that such legislation would, or could, go unchallenged but nevertheless people should be up in arms over even the slightest suggestion of such measures.

Edit: It's important to note that the Dail must be sitting in order to pass any such legislation.

Well there'd have to be exceptions when you think about it, such as warrants where AGS can "force" entry to a private house as part of their investigation to arrest someone or seize something etc.

    I'm not a lawyer/constitutional expert though.

Must be absolutely galling to be a young 20something in this country. Your education, travel opportunities, sporting and social outlets all suspended for months with no end in sight accompanied by continuous finger-wagging.

It's tough on them no doubt. When you are that age a summer feels like a year and patience an unknown word, what I mean is they are restless to get their lives going.
But on the other hand, we're not sending them off to do national service or actually fight in a war.
Just don't party and follow the guidelines to protect their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles etc

The older generation are making sacrifices too.

Even if the powers do get extended any law abiding citizen should have no reason to be concerned.

Is this a troll account like PaddyGreen but more subtle?

Someone above suggested it could be a constitutional issue. I can't see the general public supporting the notion in a referendum.

Would absolutely fail in a referendum and rightly so.

What the fcuk did we expect young people to do with pubs and nightclubs closed for months? Take a vow of chastity for a couple of years until the hysteria mongers feel safe again?

I really hope young people stand up to this. Their very futures are being sacrificed and they are being saddled with billions of our debt.

We are the most cowardly country in Europe and it is shaming to be Irish during this.

I seen some old bolix being interviewed where he was suggesting the youngsters didn't care because the virus wasn't dangerous to them.

His generation didn't wait at home to prevent spreading TB to his elderly neighbours, however, in the 50s and 60s. There was fcuk all consideration displayed in those generations

Bring back Leo. He's not great, but he's a million times better than Martin. He's way in over his head.

We shouldn't have to settle for someone not great. They either do a good job or we get someone else in. All we have is Leo and MM passing the ball to each other.

I think the situation with SF is that most people see them as a useful watchdog over the excesses of FF/FG but few who are interested in these things would really want to see them in a decision-making role in Government.

Going by their comments before and after the last GE SF in power would, if unchecked, engage in excesses that would make FF/FG seem like paragons of virtue. I hope this comment is on topic enough for you BTW.

That's an absolute stretch. Martin is incoherent and comes across as not having much of a clue. People went along with Leo, on the other hand Martin has lost the dressing room so to speak.

Anyone I speak to and the general conclusion is “he’s useless”.

It's a dangerous precedent to set is the point. Mistakes can and are made, and AGS are just as personally fallible as anyone else as we see in the press from time to time.

Also, any/all of these CV-19 measures should have a defined and limited-only-to-that-necessary-to-deliver scope, and expiration date associated with it

    Poor diddums.

Majority of cases in the last few weeks are under 45.

They need to kop on and take some responsibility.

I don't disagree with you. SF would be a disaster for the politically middle-of-the-road, average worker in this country as well as the FDI-dependent economy that forms the backbone of the country.

The scary thing is that if they'd run more candidates in the last election, it might have been Mary Lou on the podium yesterday.

We are starved of decent alternatives though which is why the FF/FG merry-go-round continues.

No you are spot on. Gardaí may enter where they have a reasonably held belief that a serious crime is about to be committed for instance or where they are in possession of a warrant. Both of these examples satisfy the Article 40 condition of "save in accordance with law". Regardless the Dáil aren't currently sitting so legislation granting the Gardaí new powers cannot be passed.

Expiration dates can and indeed have been extended where necessary. You are aware of that?

If necessary the Dail and Seanad can be recalled from recess early to debate and vote on urgent legislation.

Pardon them for living! Look, they’re not really affected by the virus. Even in a bad dose chances are they’ll recover. You can’t change this, it’s scientific fact.
It’s older people that are going to have take responsibility consummate with their health and situations. This virus is endemic now

The spread is in meat factories mainly...

Do you know many pensioners working in meat factories?

Are we now blaming under 45's for working...

Jasus Ted, wouldn't it be mad if the kids went back to school in the middle of a pandemic.

Its fine Dougal, kids are not affected by covid19.

Oh right Ted, sure what could possibly go wrong.

Ronan Glynn said yesterday, "What we don't want is 30 or 50 kids coming together and mixing every day" as a reason to limit sports training.

    Eh Schools?

It will be very interesting to see what happens when colleges open back up.

I think this is where we will see the house parties getting out of hand. They will only have college a few days a month and with no nightclubs / bars open there will definitely be an increase in number of parties.

will be interesting to see if this bring a big increase in number of cases

Yeah but I can't for the life of me see them being called back for this. Maybe I'm wrong but such measures would be deeply unpopular amongst the vast majority and any party ushering them in would be committing political suicide. It would be madness to attempt such a thing, especially if the coalition is as precariously balanced as we are led to believe.

It all starts with just 1 person.
Do you know who the person is? What age they are? How they caught it?

    I assume not.

So you can't blame an entire demographic for causing it.

    Lovely stuff.

Was it poor diddums, kop on to yourselves and take some responsibility when the majority of the cases were over 60's and the majority of deaths were the over 85's?

Aids/hiv didn't stop parties or college riding in the 80s. Its fanciful to think a virus that won't affect them will.
