Maybe we could put them in some kind of wooden stocks? And bring them into city centre? And pelt them with rotten fruit?

Oh yeah... it’s not the Middle Ages anymore.

Although we are starting to regress back centuries with people looking for the police to have powers to burst into your private property.

Only if the new regulations are being flouted. Law abiding citizens have nothing to be concerned about.

Lads this is ireland, you can have hundreds of convictions and be walking the streets. They may aswell have made this announcement on april first ! Nobody i know gives a **** for their guidelines anymore! Ill do what i want in my home and ill be going to mate houses , with far more than six people. Follow the lead of politicians here, do what you like...

I mentioned this in the main thread but think it got lost in the flurry of the press conference.

At the press conference MM said, word for word (I checked the recording) - "All visits to homes will be limited to 6 people from outside the home and from no more than 3 households both indoors and outdoors."

Now to me that means 6 people can visit a house regardless of how many people lives in that house. In my situation, that would mean 6 people (from max 3 households) could come over to my house and visit myself and fiance.

However the way this restriction is being reported makes it seem that it is 6 people from max 3 households in totality that is allowed. For me, this would mean that only 4 people (from max 2 households) could visit myself and fiance in order for us to remain within the guidelines.

    So which is it?

You can have as many people as you like as there is no way they will put in legislation to allow the Garda to enforce what happens in a private home - political suicide if they even attempt it and probably may require a constitutional referendum.Or at least be against civil liberties.

Its the usual 3 Muppets of the Apocalypse trying to frighten the crap out of the Irish people.

Notice no Leo tonight - cracks appearing in the coalition?
I f**king hope so for the sake of us all...Leo should do the right thing and pull the plug on tis coalition before there is no economy left.

    Oh god

    It's a general comment based on;

Ireland's case fatality rate for under 75s is 1.4%. This is extremely conservative as it includes deaths with covid meaning covid was not the killer and it is based on positive tests recorded. Estimates are that actual cases are many multiples higher than recorded positives. It may not be unreasonable to suggest 0.14% is a more accurate estimate of deaths caused by covid.

Above this age group we hit the median age life expectancy for Irish people. The median age of all "with" covid deaths in Ireland is still higher than the median life expectancy which demonstrates that covid is no more harmful than just surviving past the median age of life expectancy in Ireland.

Cold hard data, not hysteria and ignorant one liner posts.

    Disagree

Invasive laws sold as for "your safety" are rarely in the public interest.

Ok let's go with this, how long of a hard lockdown do you think it would need to achieve this. 2 months 3 months what do you think.

We could. And everyone locked in I suppose. To hell with all those with loved ones outside the country. All those who embraced being connected to the wider Europe and wonderful connectivity these past years.

Your type couldn't care less about all that. Bring us all back to the dark ages. Have zero covid for Christmas until somehow it gets right back in like it did in NZ!

There is no Covid free anywhere until there's a vaccine. Some of you might have no life to put on hold. But many of us do and we want to go on living it!

So is "we have to live with the virus"

It takes a lot of suspension of reality

The IT has an article up on what NPHET recommended vs what the Government decided on. It opens with :
Tuesday’s Cabinet briefing was unusually fractious. There were complaints from Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, and many Ministers, over how little time people had to reflect on a series of significant changes, and how it would impact on their departments.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/new-covid-restrictions-how-do-they-compare-with-nphet-s-advice-1.4333557

Sounds like there was a bit of a spat alright

So what? This is not the first time there has been disagreement among Cabinet ministers including those all from the same party. It has happened before and will happen again.

Are people taking any notice of what they say about public transport?

The Indo has reported on the NPHET recommendations which are, to put it bluntly, ridiculous.

Asking people to avoid public transport even though schools are back next week gives me a stronger belief that schools going back is the end game and covid restrictions die soon after. Offices have been told to keep staff home until mid-September too. Clearly the plan is to get kids back, wait 14 days and if nothing happens (as it won't considering covid is zero risk to children) everything will be reopened.

In a way it gives me a sense of relief that actually the end is in sight, mid-september to early October. It has been painfully slow however.

    This makes considerable sense

Not sure really. Unless FG are planning to break ranks and go to the country which I doubt they’ll bother doing for many reasons. Government will plod along as is, lot of these people are new to government, they lack the shrewd slickness of the likes of Leo and Harris. Then again FG weren’t exactly rewarded at the ballot box, might gain 20 seats on a good day. No where near an overall majority so you’re back to square one.

Lads this shambles of ffg is continuing exactly from where fg left off! The reason its appearing a bit more tricky now, is because the easy choices and can kicking with schools etc , is over...

The 15 people outdoor limit makes no sense. You can't train in a group of 16 but you can be inside a sweaty venue with hundreds.

What do you think is going to happen when schools open up? Hundreds of cases every day, huge levels of community transmission, vulnerable adults infected and many more deaths.
Look at the USA, more schools and colleges going online every day.

No you can`t not legally anyway.

How many times is the country going to roll back on the relaxations?

Surely we will come to a point where the vulnerable will have to be cautious and the rest of society/economy will have to go about our lives as normal?

Schools in Europe are shut in August except in Scotland. But wait until Spain, Romania, Bulgaria France and Belgium open up, it won't be pretty.

I just read somewhere that the new rule regarding gatherings in private homes not having more than 6 people can be interpreted to include members of the household.

There’s more than 6 in my household so we’re already technically breaking that rule. Does that mean we cannot have any guests over seeing as we’re already over capacity? Or is it the household +6?

How on earth will they enforce that? This is actually beyond ridiculous now.
The problem lies in meat factories, direct provision centres and those returning from abroad/tourists not isolating on arrival.
Yet they’re throwing everything but the kitchen sink at sport, household gatherings and pubs, none of which has caused any clusters to date. It’s mind boggling.
