Just a little tip for junior classes . I was sent a photo of a childs first day in school in Berlin . Now these kids are aged 6-7 so equal to our 1st class
They each had a large place mat in front of them on the desk. ( fine big fun place mat)
They roll it up and bring it home and asked to clean it and spray it with anti bac ready for the next day .
They were seated four at a table with no distancing between them .

Perhaps I'm a bit thick but what's the benefit of the place mat? Is it to give them their own designated work space? Because if so you could achieve the same thing with a bit of tape on the desks surely and then there's no risk of children forgetting to bring their mat in.

Fine except you could not guarantee it being cleaned as there is always one, so safer to clean it in school

I am sure not everyone in Berlin cleanes it but they are willing to give it a try .
But the table will be cleaned as well I presumed .

so cant have gatherings of 200 outside in 60000 seater stadiums for hour or so as it not safe

yet can send 1000 students and staff into same building all.day everyday

office workers asked to stay at home

school reopening plan is an absolute shambles as it stands..

I said it on this thread about 4/5 weeks ago that this was occurring in some schools as friends had told me.

Get the GP note now just in case, I'm getting one so they don't have to wear a mask.

Better off just having it in case.

How do you avoid the boy who cried wolf effect?

Yes I presume it was their own work space to stay on it to colour and eat etc

It's an interesting idea. Seems a bit unnecessary to me but I'm sure the German school have a good system worked out.

Is it time for the unions to step in? I know there will be public backlash, but they cannot let their members go into a work environment that defies every public health advice for other workplaces.

Who knows, but if they have a GP letter there's not much else can be done really. Most GP won't write a letter unless they can stand over what's being said about the patients history.

It's not that difficult to understand its about priorities and getting schools open is a big priority long overdue.

Really it's all about optics. There has been zero evidence of any clusters from any sporting spectators.

But in this case I would be doubtful that a gp can write a letter to the effect that every cough the child will have is due to his / her asthma. How can they when a cough is one of the signs of covid ? The potential for spread of covid in a school setting is too much to allow the gp to sign off on a child’s cough in Sep. I say that as someone in a similar position and believe me it will be annoying but what can you do.

Optics is right, that's all it is now at this stage.

Same way as there's a lockdown the Kildare, Offaly and Laois (there is no real lockdown happening in these areas BTW).

Symptoms equals get out of the classroom. It has to be that way.

Anything else is selfish, seeking special treatment and a contrived twisting of things.

Yes the gp will state your child has asthma, your excuse is still illogical.

by hook or crook as they say.

Schools should certainly be looking to reopen, but in a safe and staggered manner. As it stands we will be back to school for a few weeks and all will be locked down again, current plan (or lack thereof) is absolutely mindbogglingly dangerous.

and just imagine a poor child with a cough in a school setting, can only imagine the bullying and abuse at a post primary level

"The advice of NPHET to Cabinet is that, unless it is absolutely essential for an employee to attend their workplace in person, all employees should work remotely, it is understood."

I guess they'd have to convince that it's not absolutely essential for them to be teaching in school, because NPHET are saying it's fine if that's the case.

Blended learning or online learning would be appropriate for at least second level.

and the department has had since march to get blended learning into a usable state with a unified online portal for students, have they done it, not a chance.

just listening to the tv3 conference, when asked about schools opening vs new measures in place today they just couldnt give an answer other than economy, i had to turn it off, the levels of either stupidity or pure pig headidness are enough to make you cry.

No more than 6 indoors but a class of 30 in school. There's not room for half a metre distancing between children in my class, as far as I can see masks are discouraged in primary schools (I have 6th class, which fit into the age bracket where they can spread the virus "at least as well as adults do"), I technically can't see my family all at the same time as there are 7 of us, but next week I am expected to go back to work pretty much unprotected? I have been very optimistic about going back to work but the lack of answers from the government and absolutely no word from my school about the measures that are being put in place, I can't help but feel frustrated! Unless only half my class are allowed into the room at a time there is no possibility of social distancing. This is not an option because there is nowhere for the other half of the class to go. Sorry about the rambling; I am just getting frustrated now. I want to go back to work, but safely. It seems like the government are happy to send us back regardless of whether its safe or not. I dunno, feeling disheartened.

that and its imperative for the health of the children to get crammed back into schools, schools are unique in that the virus wont go near them, and shure the economy

I am at the point now where I am looking for another job. Everyone is protected in some way (work from home, perspex screens, social distancing) but teachers and students. It is insulting and upsetting to be valued to little.

They just dont care, it is about optics the FF government got the schools open on time.

the complete lack of at the very least giving a decent explanation as to why everything is getting reigned back again, except for the full steam ahead business as normal schools with bs provisions put in place. I am absolutely terrified and id imagine many fellow school staff are too, its bloody criminal at this stage

Firstly speaking as a working parent, primary level need to get back to school. Online learning is not appropriate for primary level and certainly not for children with SEN. Even talk of "blended learning" is futile. Similar to alot of parents I cannot work (and it doesn't pay!) if I have to pay someone else to be at home with them, either doing school work at home with them or dropping and picking them up at various staggered times.

Now, on the other hand, as a teacher I can completely empathize with teachers who are frustrated and worried about the blatant disregard for public health advice. Like many school buildings, my work place lacks ventilation, space and has inadequate facilities for regular day to day functioning never mind social distancing etc. The department have shut up shop and provided absolutely no guidelines whatsoever. We are due to do a "training course" before school opens next week...except the dept have yet to release any details about said course...Basically I have no faith in the department of education and their response to this pandemic BUT if government guidelines state we are to go back into the classroom I will be there...I can't see any other way out of this except to forge ahead..

Did I hear correctly that Glynn said that we would not be happy with schools opening with the figures that we currently have?
