Not sure where you are getting this information from but its definitely not from any official channels. Altho to be honest I'd be happy to to back to work then.

I think you quoted the wrong post?

The number of school days quoted in my post is correct and official.

There won't be a ban on flights.

If information been leaked by our government is to be believed the 17th of August is being a date flouted for schools reopening.
That will take out such a large amount of people planning to holiday overseas..

Zero chance of schools reopening before end of August or September 1st.

    Touted from where?

The school year operates to a calender where primary must do 183 days and secondary 167. Schools are due back from the end of August. Bringing it forward to that extent would create a tsunami of reactions from unions to principals to parents. Not to mention everybody else.

Nothing would surprise me in this new crazy universe we inhabit but I can't see that happening.

Only people that will complain will be the lazy teachers. Once all measures are in place they should go back early to do a quick catch up.

They can bring It forward due to lost time from the last academic year.
3 secondary schools in Wicklow have requested our security to give access outside of working hours to to facilitate staff and contractor's to carry out work and duties .
The date they were telling us was 17th August for reopening

    No they can't.
There's actually a circular about that from the DES.
Principals will usually get work done on school at end of August

Yesterday's Irish times articles on travel were spinning a government line of we want the schools to open as planned at the end of August and travel reduces the chances of that happening.

So it seems to be they're playing the 2 off, using the schools as a reason to tell people they shouldn't travel.

For what its worth all the schools in my area are due to open as planned last week in August with the usual staggered first week back, new classes in first and then the rest a day or two later

Well that is the in formation we were giving.
Theses are not usual times perhaps some principals see this and are acting accordingly.

I think they've been pretty clear, if you want schools forgoe the foreign holidays. They haven't directly said it but it's blindingly obvious from their updates.

Apologies. It was the post you responded to I should have quoted.

The one about reopening in the middle of August.

Not sure how it even makes sense to be honest seeing as schools opened first in other EU countries with little to no effect. Before any retail or hospitality never mind travel.

But sure we must know something everyone else doesn't.

Either way people are going to travel, make your own mind up now if you want to go or not. Personally I'll be going in August, I've made my decision and decided to travel.

Work on our primary school started already. These are special times so normal rules don't apply. Can't wait till August in case spike comes then, need to do the work now.

    Confirmations in August

Schools have already given out their school calendars with return dates notified to parents, coupled with this many people have booked off their staycations or vacations around these dates. There are also some summer camps running up to the third week of August which parents will have paid for. The School Support for Deis schools and children with additional needs runs right into August in some schools, with principals then needing the building to prepare for reopening the end of August. Anyone here claiming schools could reopen earlier is just stirring the pot. Secondary schools always reopen last week of August with a staggered return or start for its students.

There was no time lost. Teaching immediately went online once schools closed last March and the calendar was worked.

In addition, a huge number of extra hours were worked on the LC grading with school managers being occupied with that up to the last week of June.

So I very much doubt any secondary schools will be ready to reopen before the last week of August as scheduled. Primary may have other arrangements. However the official number of days still stand. So if you have a school coming back 7-10 days ahead of schedule there will have to be extended holidays during the year.

My daughters primary school send a notice that school would be opening on 1st of Sept and they are planning for a full reopening. This is also reflected on their online calendar on the school website which just got updated for 20/21 year.

Simon Harris on Twitter telling everyone to ‘cop on’ again...The fact is people now realise the restrictions are completely disproportionate to the threat currently and want to live their lives.
Constantly talking down to people on a night out isn’t the answer.

Its was also completely demoralising to look around Europe and see places opening up while here it seems as if there's outrage at absolutely everything, people need to learn to live alongside this and get used to seeing crowds return, 500 outdoors in 2 weeks time.

How long do people put their lives on hold?? If some had their way it would be indefinitely. Time to live life, nobody is forcing anyone to go into any bars or restaurants.

This is a good read https://m.independent.ie/opinion/comment/a-summer-of-public-shaming-39341005.html

Well if you're going to quote his tweets, why not also quote those with the pictures that prompted them - the pics of a packed city centre last night, where social distancing absolutely was not being observed.

    I agree.

Managed and safe reopening. Which is what I have seen this weekend in another EU Member State. Was able to enjoy days and evenings out and importantly feel safe.

It would be great if we could actually wait for case numbers to go up before getting hysterical.

The 2nd wave has been coming for a long time according to some. It hasn’t happened yet so let’s wait and see.

One person in now many? What are we supposed to do so? Hide under the bed? Lockdown until a vaccine is found? I’m sorry for the lad I really am but I’m sorry for loads of people who get sick or die young. I’d a good friend killed 25 years ago in a car crash but it didn’t stop me driving.

I've been saying this for a while, but it's the open ended nature of social distancing that's causing so many people to lose hope and stop giving a f*ck about it. Not saying what people did last night in Dame Lane was right, but for many people socialising in crowds is their primary outlet in life, and all this bullsh!t talk of "the new normal" is seriously screwing people up, talking as if we will never return to being able to have a proper night out.

If they would give any indication - even if they literally said "we have to socially distance until we find and roll out a vaccine, so it could be a year or two" - that would be better than this "by the end of the summer, everything will be open again with social distancing still in place" and just leaving it at that with absolutely no comment on how long it might be until that doesn't have to be the case.

There's probably a lack of demographic empathy at play here as well in fairness. If you're a bit older or in a relationship it's a lot harder to understand why for young, single folk, not being able to mingle in a crowd is the death of one's social life and the talk of "the new normal" makes it sound as if you'll never get that back. It's in that context that things like this are starting to happen - if people had any idea what kind of end date we're working towards it would be easier, but the idea of this being permanent is introducing a nihilistic outlook of "fair enough, we're f*cked so, let's just take the risk now".

One person in now many? Don't know
What are we supposed to do so? Maintain social distancing. Wear masks in public places/on public transport.
Hide under the bed? That would be ridiculous
Lockdown until a vaccine is found? What happens if there's no vaccine?
I’m sorry for the lad I really am but I’m sorry for loads of people who get sick or die young. I’d a good friend killed 25 years ago in a car crash but it didn’t stop me driving.A driving analogy makes no sense in this context

Of course it didn't. It probably did mean you didn't drink and drive, or drove a bit more carefully, though.

What you're supposed to do is take sensible precautions. So yes, go out, meet your friends somewhere you've booked, have a meal and a few pints. Not party like it's new years eve in a confined space as if everything was fine.

Totally agree with you on "the new normal"!

No, it's not normal, it's a horrible, temporary situation we have to cope with, and suggesting it's going to be "normal" is incredibly depressing!
