Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    So it's here - 19 weeks ago we had no cases. 19 days ago we had 25,237. In those past 19 days we've had 237 cases - an average of less than 27 compared to a peak of over 1,000

    This thread has "survived" for 33 days - the original one was on the go for 34

    In terms of thread content:

    • Cut out any cover-up/conspiracy stuff. If you have a reliable source quote it (not just their words but provide a link to a reliable source) - otherwise your claims carry little if any weight. If you wish to discuss conspiracy theories we have a dedicated forum for that and it’s not this one
    • If the likes of the HSE have a verified Twitter account we can assume what they post is accurate. Randomers on here or elsewhere cannot be considered "official" or "reliable" sources
    • If people wish to flout the restriction rules that is up to them. They cannot complain at the consequences, be that direct action from the authorities, exposure in Social Media (not here) or being shunned by locals, friends, family etc. If they post about it here, or encourage others to flout the rules, trying to appear macho, or thinking they are above the rules or simply being a smart arse, posting privileges will be removed
    • If you don't want to see discussion about Trump perhaps stay clear of this thread between the hours of 22:00 and 01:00. This is a thread for "breaking news" so please do not expect posters to discuss things happening "now" in other threads. It's not discouraged but equally posters expect to discuss such issues in this thread (added 14/04/20)
    And now a maths lesson:
    “Average” is a non-defined term. “Mean” and “Median” are both mathematically defined terms.
    Mean = the sum of a series of numbers divided by the number of items in the series
    Hence the Mean of 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 7, 8 = (1+2+3+3+4+7+8)/7 = 4
    Median is the midpoint number. In the above example it’s the 4th number in the sequence of 7 numbers – in this case 3
    Both numbers are examples of “averages”. Not every average is the “Mean”, not every average is the “Median”, but every “Mean” and every “Median” number is an average

    Been told by a reliable source that vaccine production is to start in Cork in the next few weeks. No idea which vaccine it is but 95% positive this is true.

    Just in relation to the Government censorship of our Chief Medical Officer...

    The optimist in me thinks they've decided to go down the quarantine route as the holidaymakers won't listen to anyone there determined to go, there's no guarantee any of them will get a free pass back in 7 days after they leave on the bug bridges.

    Could it really jsut be coincidence that South Africa, one of the more developed nations in Africa, is one of the only nations on the continent reporting large numbers of cases and deaths daily? Do the numbers there signify that many cases/deaths are going unreported across the rest of Africa?

    If cases are minimal to none then there's nobody to spread it, it's not like we can't deal with some cases, we're trying to avoid some cases becoming lots of cases. At the moment case numbers are so low in most parts of the country that wearing masks is an unnecessary inconvenience.

    We're all human, it's understandable if people start to slip in compliance with measures. Even when we know something is good for us we generally struggle to keep it up. Why not save masks for when we actually need them (if that time comes)?

    I'm posting here through the lens of eradicating it, but maybe that is unrealistic in Europe with travel and that. Maybe what you're talking about could work if it could be managed.

    South Africa has done nearly more tests than the rest of Africa combined.

    this is one to watch methinks, its in the Americas now and can be transmitted person to person.

    is this the big plague or even a precursor to it?

    Yeh it's interesting that the defining memories of this pandemic are not the deaths or severity of disease but the mass societal hysteria ,spread of dangerous misinformation and fake news, the overreaction by governments who were so quick to remove so many civil liberties we took for granted in the free world, etc

    Don't you know that Michael Levitt - remember him? - said that it would burn itself out before now?

    It wasn't like he didn't know about what he was talking about and his "conclusions" were based on false methodology - and was latched onto and repeated ad nasuem by others who equally didn't know what they were talking about either.

    They weren't quick at all. They let the virus infest their countries before finally being dragged into lockdowns at the very last moment. Some were worse than others - the Asian countries obviously took it seriously straight away, whereas continental Europe were slow even with Italy going into meltdown but still locked down in the medium term. Ireland eventually got the message. Then you have the UK staggering in when everybody has vacated the bar.

    Remembering these threads in mid March, they moved so fast I nicknamed them "The Daily Blur". At one stage Beasty needed to create a new one every 48 hours. That's 10,000 posts every 2 days

    I can't remember a more surreal (or dare I say scarier!) time on this forum and I'm posting and reading on them, on and off, since around 2003

    We haven't beaten this bástard yet, we still need to be vigilant and we still need the Government to wake up re: the Airports

    But! Thank feck it's not the days of mid March
