Any mention of cinemas being opened earlier?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,977 ✭✭✭TheDoctor

Going to be a case where you buy the cheapest food on the menu and stay for a feed of pints. No complaints from me.

Cinemas I'd guess will be phase 4 (July 20) they were originally phase 5 (10 Aug).

Not pubs technically as will be serving food and then a drink let's say.... Restaurants.

The bar will be blanked off so no sitting up at it.

But can I go and just buy a beer?

Pubs can open with table service

Spaced out seating I'd imagine. Cinemas re-opened in Czech Republic but cinema-going crowds are down there.

A friend of mine has vowed he won't step foot inside a cinema.

I assume it'll be by reservation so you'll have the table for a set time but I doubt they'll want people sitting at it and just having a couple of beers. With the reduction in capacity and the staffing needed to greet and seat guests and provide table service and take reservations it won't be profitable to have you take up basically a 4 x 4 metre space drinking a pint every 30 mins ish. But I dunno I've worked bars all my lefe and can't see how it works this way...

Haven't been on Boards all day, so is the general consensus that the government are simply relaxing early because they know the people want it?

And they can't roll back or slow down?

    Money talks

Seems to be the way. It was always going to be the boss of things.

On the same day they cut the PUP to reign in the expenses, they open up the economy quicker to let people get back to work.

    No coincidence.

Yes, it seems the restaurant thing is a red herring. It's not about food; it's about not milling around the bar, but sitting at a table and being served.

Without getting a head of myself but it's lovely to see people on here talking about pubs and cinemas and the like. Some of the more negative posters don't seem to be around for some reason.

Crying themselves to sleep because thier little lockdown adventure is over. Back into the big bad world, back to working for a living, no more social media posts about how they are self isolating.

Really? Am I not allowed to be happy for the good, positive news we received today?

I bet if I came on here this evening only complaining & berating the government about lack of cancer screenings & the fact that hairdressers are in phase 4 I’m quite sure many here would have called me ungrateful for the progress and told me to ‘call my doctor if I’m concerned about my health’, because urgent patients are still being looked after.
Like they have done every other time this issue has come up on thread.

I have been in touch with a local TD for the last 2 weeks over the issues surrounding cancer screenings and he has assured me that this is of utmost importance to resolve, and it’s currently being worked on.
I have also signed a petition specifically about the urgency surrounding restarting Cervical Check services and shared with my friends and family.

Today’s announcement will take easily a few hundred thousand off the live register, and will be the first solid attempt we as a country make at a return to normality in almost 3 months.
That is definitely something to be happy about & celebrate, even if I’d rather get my hair done next week and want the health service to resume to normal, not that I personally owe you an explanation on that matter or anything.
It is possible to feel happy & relieved at the progress today while recognising there are still huge issues surrounding cancer screenings & early intervention.

Yes that's great to hear at last !

There isn't much to say really.

All that can be done now is hope for the best.

Ah fair play for realising you're a negative poster, but definitely not the worst. Don't worry, if things go awry our Government will shut things down quicker than you can blink. Most of the scaremongers aren't going outside anyways. Ye will be fine.

Haven't been on here most of today so here it goes,

Honestly never expected them to announce a speeding up of the opening now. I thought at best we would have phase 2 and then 3 would bring elements of 4 into it but that we would be open in August with phase 5.

In saying that delighted they've decided to move everything forward, I think it was a case of the people moved ahead in the lockdown phase and they moved ahead in reopening so the government had to react. I dont buy into the narrative that NPHET and DR Tony gave all of this the go ahead. Maybe when I read the NPHET letter I'll be surprised but I think they've been forced into it by government, they couldn't afford this to go on into August.

The main thing now is to continue with the hand hygiene and the respiratory etiquette, the last thing anyone wants is the phases to be delayed. Best outcome we're open by mid July, a month earlier than planned which will be vital for businesses across the country.

Looking forward to my Sunday carvery and pint at the end of June.

We have to keep moving forward, no going back now.

The people won't accept any roll back at this stage.

If 'the people' follow the guidelines, there will be absolutely be no need to roll back anything. It is completely within the control of 'the people'

Did they give any advice on mask wearing?

Perhaps a happy medium, open early as suggested and mask wearing advised in indoor public areas

Nope advice stays the same as it was regarding masks

At the risk of sounding like someone who suffers from split personality disorder, I find that strange, its been such a conservative approach to now business as usual. Surely most would be happy with mask wearing for a little while.

    What exactly happened today????

Has someone realised the exchequer is haemorrhaging its last and needs life support?
